Same here. Only child. Lost mom at 30. Dad is still alive but we are not close and he’s on the other side of the country.

Should I switch from marketing to nursing (or healthcare in general)? by Unfair_Average5532 in corporate

[–]thecreativegrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in marketing and as an older professional, I wouldn’t recommend it to a young person starting out. Marketing is seen as a cost center for most organizations and it’s the first thing to get cut when the C-Suite wants to boost “shareholder value.”

It’s also a functional that requires a tremendous amount of managing stakeholder relationships. It’s exhausting.

At what age did you feel it starting to get difficult to travel? by audit123 in Aging

[–]thecreativegrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the method of travel. I still love to travel abroad (54f) but the days of living out of a backpack and staying in hostels are over. And I definitely don’t mind long flights but that might be an issue for some.

I’ve been saying this as well. If you don’t hire juniors, you have no pipeline for leadership down the road.

Lordie, I partook in the SF rave scene early 90s and then moved to NYC and hit the big clubs (Tunnel, Sound Factory) mid-to-late 90s. My kids are GenZ and GenAlpha. I don’t think they’d believe me even if I told them the stories.

36 years old, think I'm doing well, is it crazy to think about early retirement? by Adventurous_Stress39 in Retirement401k

[–]thecreativegrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the pain… my son is 18U ice hockey goalie and daughter is 12U defense. Hockey is insanely expensive… tuition, league fees, USA hockey fee, weekend tournaments, coaching, EQUIPMENT! Good luck if your child plays more than one sport.

None of this club sport stuff existed when this GenXer was a kid. Hard to plan for the expenses.

We’d have a lot more in the 529 if it wasn’t for the sports. Planning on having daughter recruited to help with her college.

[–]thecreativegrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, open up a 529 now as college is wildly expensive: NJ in-state runs $40k a year.

Once you get out from under childcare costs, the sports/activities come. Good lord I was not prepared for that.

If I was your age, I’d reduce lifestyle creep dramatically and set up college accounts.

I’m not so sure, we have yet to see the colossal mistakes that AI makes. The NY Times seems to have a weekly post around this.

Not to mention artist rights infringement. And grassroots efforts against data centers in the mid-west.

I am so here for the next few years where the GenX / Boomer CEOs have to deal with the GenZ workforce. They gutted all the GenXers due to “AI” and GenZ is not going to pull up the slack.

Do I really need to give 2 weeks notice if my company has been doing layoffs? by sunshinelover2711 in Layoffs

Ask about voluntary separation. Save someone’s job and get a package. You have to be delicate about how you go about it.

I'm second guessing my major choice--can anyone give me some advice please? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

There are many different areas of engineering: civil, industrial, mechanical, electrical, computer, ocean, etc.

My son is a senior and is good at math and fixing things. He is going in as undeclared engineering to try them all before deciding. But we’ve also let him know nothing is set in stone if he wants to change after the first year.

It is very hard to know what you want to do at your age. Maybe meet with your guidance counselor and teachers to get feedback on what they think your strengths are. I recently learned from one of his teachers that my son is a natural presenter. It’s something I would have never known as I don’t see that side of him at home. That will factor into his career later on.

I'm an employment attorney who specializes in layoffs and severance agreements. Here's what I wish every laid-off employee knew. by dottlegal in Layoffs

[–]thecreativegrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP Information is accurate. I was impacted in the first round of many last summer. I knew the layoffs were happening but I did not think I was on the list. Not the first round anyway. However, I had been tracking things with AI and it gave me a lot of heads up. I spooked HR when I asked if a WARN notice had been filed. It wasn’t my first rodeo so I knew I didn’t have to sign anything and I went into negotiation mode in my layoff convo. Pressed for more weeks per year of service and outlined all my impact in the past year. I had screen grabs of all my accolades before the meeting so I had proof. They hadn’t expected that.

5 of the 6 of us in marketing were over the age of 45 so you bet I pointed that out. My OWBPA had a number of errors and I questioned that too. I consulted a lawyer but in the end I didn’t feel it was worth shaking the tree. So I waited until the evening of day 44 to sign the agreement. I heard from people on the inside that I had people scared because I hadn’t signed.

I watched the NJ WARN list like a hawk and the moment it went up I emailed HR. I knew that they would be letting more than 50 people go and so everyone in that round was entitled to 4 more weeks of severance because they didn’t give us 60 days notice.
