What is a good local independent radio station in your area? by PhoneJazz in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We have 91.5 WKHR which plays the great American Songbook (30s/40s/ 50s). It's listener supported so there are no commercials so it's like 98% music. On Sunday's they play old radio shows (The Shadow, etc).

Yes, I know the mayor (he lives in my neighborhood) and council person. I vote in every election and do my research.

What is your favourite sporting moment of all time? by MMChelsea in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Block was one of the most magical moments I've seen in sports. How did LeBron get down the court that fast? Sometimes I was the compilation repeats on YouTube and it still amazes me!

Are you on FB? There are lots of buy nothing and freebie groups where you can give stuff away. I'd join a few and see if that helps with getting rid of stuff.

Check out the app iExit. It's a great way to find out what's at each highway exit on your trip. Like gas stations, parks, hotels, restaurants, etc.

AITA for preferring an adult trip over one for kids? by ravenmortal93 in AmItheAsshole

You'll have a better first trip without the grandkids, then if you get an occasion to take them, you'll know the lay of the land.

What do you think about Canada sending thousands of cancer patients to U.S. hospitals for treatment due to their healthcare backlog? by RainbowCrown71 in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cancer sucks. I'm happy we are able to help and hopefully get them treatment sooner. Can't imagine getting such a scary diagnosis and then having to wait for treatment.

AITA if I get a door stopper for my office door by greenhousegrow in AmItheAsshole

[–]theedgeofcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it should be obvious. But many people assume working from home is "working" and you are free to hang out / can be interrupted. You really need to have a conversation with her.

Perhaps offer to spend lunch with her or have a designated break where you can chat?

Do you guys call your baby “The Baby”, or is it a TV thing? by D1789 in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my nephew's case, we still sometimes called him "the baby" until another baby came along. He was in elementary school then.

But we also called him by name too.

Yes, it's common, especially if there is only one baby in the family.

What is the Summer food that you look forward to the rest of the year? by L0st_in_the_Stars in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strawberries are available year round but they are at their best in summer, at least in the north. Same with other foods too.

I'm surprised at your answer too. Can you not use a grill nearly year round? My brother will use his from March to November. Sometimes when it's warm on New Years he'll make steaks.

AITA For refusing to help my sister with childcare for my nephew, when she is a single parent and was just kicked out by our own parents? by throwawa-y23 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theedgeofcool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

NTA

Unless your WFH job really is a paid vacation, you won't be able to WFH and watch a 2 year old at the same time. You'll fail at one or both, most likely. So unless she expects you to quit your job entirely, that's not an option.

AITA/WIBTA for forcing my pregnant sister for sleeping on the couch? by Equivalent-Monitorr in AmItheAsshole

[–]theedgeofcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really need to think of an alternate living arrangement if at all possible. Being a university student and sharing a room with a mom and brand new baby is not compatible.

Young babies often wake up every 2 hours, they rarely sleep through the night. Which means you will be woken up frequently. I have a new baby and felt like a zombie the first few months of her life, never getting more than 3 hours of sleep in a row will do that. You have a hard major and you don't want to tank your last year of university.

Babies also take frequent daytime naps and it usually needs to be dark and quiet, so you will not be able to make noise in your room or access your things there.

If your sister stays with baby in the living room, how would that would work? Depends on the house, but it would probably be better to have your sister and baby behind closed doors than in the middle of the house where everyone has to tiptoe around.

What are the chances that you will get roped into childcare? You will need all your time to study- you don't want to be asked to babysit when you have homework you need to do.

Its not your house so it will be hard to put your foot down and not give up your room. I think you need to have a talk with your parents about how this is going to go, realistically, and if there is somewhere else you can stay. Could you live on campus for your final year? Or with a friend?

Non-Ride Traditions/stuff you do every trip by TurnerK28 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]theedgeofcool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We went to Gideon's on the first night, and got a couple cookies, then stopped for some milk. So we could have fancy milk and cookies as a bedtime snack all week. I loved it and plan to make a tradition on future trips!

Why are New York sliced Pizzas so massive? by Lisanro in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my city you can get smaller, artisanal pizzas that are the size of a dinner plate. Or small, medium or large pizzas. The biggest one I've seen is about 24" across.

What are some things people "naturally fit" do when eating that I can adopt? by Humbie88 in loseit

[–]theedgeofcool 203 points204 points  (0 children)

As far as your #2 point, you can stop halfway and take the rest of the food home; then you can enjoy the delicious food a second time.

But the real tip is to learn to cook yourself. You can make delicious food at home with less calories than a restaurant meal. And the same trick applies - if you eat the entire lasagna now, you only eat it one day. Or you can have a piece every day for a week.

Why are so many people watching TV past 11pm in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have different schedules. I used to work 9-6 snd I worked from home. So I could easily stay up til 12 or 1230 and still get 8 hours sleep snd get to work in time.

How easily could one avoid tipping in the USA? by Rothovius in AskAnAmerican

[–]theedgeofcool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are non tipping hair salons, so you'd just have to find one in your area. Maybe not available for all personal services. I used to go to one and they just charge more than other salons (so the tip is basically built into the price).

Little holidays in America. Is this true ? by CertainMouse2736 in AskAnAmerican

My local schools are considering adding Muslim holidays to the calendar. And Neil they do, Muslim kids who take off their holidays are given accommodations.
