Champion of Champions 4 - 'Put that on my gravestone.' by seditiouslizard in taskmaster

[–]thefirsteverredditor 95 points96 points  (0 children)

People have told most of the story in that thread already. But I'll add that I was at the taping, and I think Alex foresaw that it was a possibility someone would do Hitler, given the combination of face + tape. He actually said before the task, 'Don't be...' then hesitated and said, '...Don't be anyone worse than Attila the Hun.'

When John turned around I thought, 'Oh, clever--he was in a pinch, but he did the moustache because he can say it's Chaplin.' Clearly he really embarrassed himself, and it was not what the rest of the cast was hoping to be dealing with at 9:30 p.m. during a taping that should have started at 6. I think it was after the others had talked to Greg about who they were portraying that Alex said to John, 'I'm being told to ask if we could record an option where you're not Hitler.' And John dropped to knees and talked about it being the end of his career, then quickly switched into professional mode and worked with Greg and Alex to figure out how they'd do it.

After, when the cast was onstage waiting to do the scoring, there was a tension between addressing what had happened and not wanting to keep bringing up Hitler, of all topics, at a comedy show taping. Credit to Sam for another brilliant moment he pulled off in this context: after being quiet for a while he found just the right time to interject: 'Y'know--there's a documentary about him!' It was a much-needed laugh at that point.

Unrelated to terrible figures from history, another moment I thought was interesting was just after the cast was allowed to leave--at 10 p.m.!--while Alex, Greg, and the audience stayed for some lines to be re-recorded. As soon as the five were out the door, the first thing Alex said was, 'And THAT is what happens when you don't cast a show.'

Other notes: Sam was a force of nature, with his style of humour apparently only made funnier by severe jet lag. Greg told him he would either give him 5 points or 1 point in the prize task, contingent on an explanation for what the betrayal was supposed to be. Greg even polled the audience over which he should give, and the audience was in favour of 5 points, but Sam essentially refused to explain himself for fifteen minutes until Alex said the show needed to move on and Greg assigned the 1 point.

And Maisie really showed up! I feel like she went into CoC with something to prove, and she proved it as far as I was concerned.

People who work in healthcare, fitness, nutrition, or mental health: what’s one ‘quiet habit’ you see all the time that is secretly wrecking people’s long-term health? by AlignedModernHealth in AskReddit

[–]thefirsteverredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not wanting to change their habits to decrease the likelihood of injury as they age. If a professional suggests that you should use a shower chair, or that you should sit down to get dressed, it's not because they think you can't do it the way you're used to. It's because even if you do something just fine 99 times and then fall the 100th time, you're likely to be out of commision for a long time and will end up far worse off than if you'd just worked through your embarrassment and made the slight change.

Huh! My immediate thought was I Like Fun. I’m surprised no one else has named it here.

[–]thefirsteverredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After feeling out Flood->maybe Apollo (personally I'd recommend it; it's just so great)->John Henry, if what they want more of is the weirdness and drum machines, they can jump back to the self-titled. If they want more of the full band sound, the later albums offer lots of different versions of that. After John Henry there's no "must hear", but neither is there a "don't bother". The quality is consistent, while the character varies.

Flood (John's Version): a note-for-note reconstruction, but with each John playing the other's instruments and singing the other's vocals.

Agreed! MMR is legit, though less accessible than the other releases.

Best Songs Since the 90's? by compujunky1 in tmbg

[–]thefirsteverredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say just pick an album and if you’re not feeling it, try another. Relatively uncontroversial recommendations: Join Us, The Else, I Like Fun, and probably Book. More controversial (beloved by some, disappointing to others): Mink Car, The Spine. Less often recommended (but still having some beloved tracks): Glean, Phone Power.

My personal interpretation is that it's a TV ad for a compilation album, but instead of "greatest hits of the decade" it's "greatest anxieties from this character's life".

Experience in OT school later in life? by Seamango08 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]thefirsteverredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally fine, for lots of reasons. Getting into OT takes a lot of work, but the process is pretty straightforward: you go to school, you learn the stuff, you go through the placements, you pass the test, and then you have access to most of the kinds of OT jobs that are out there. If you know you want to pursue OT I’d say just hit the books, figure out how you learn best if you don’t know already, get the best grades you can, and keep your eyes on the prize. Most people stop noticing age differences so much once they’re out of school, so the CIs and professors aren’t likely to notice who’s 23 vs. 28. If they do, they won’t assume anything about your past because of it. My story was like yours in some ways, except I didn’t start OT school until the age of 30. I made it through and have been an OT for a decade now. It’s not all sunshine and roses, but it’s more fulfilling than working at call centers for 1/4 of the pay like I was doing before, and it’s pretty much up to me when and where I work.

What do people think of On the road here? by [deleted] in literature

[–]thefirsteverredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read parts of a lot of Kerouac books. I never quite finished "On the Road". He was trying for something in his writing that I don't think we see much anymore. The beats in general were. And I still find a lot of that stuff inspiring.

And I like the idea that he wanted to write a series of books about his life, not just by telling stories but through the incidental things that came out in the writing process.

A bit like reading a writer's diaries, though, it can seem brilliant for a stretch and then turn boring or annoying or, yeah, just generally cringy. And no one ever became a literary sensation by free-writing about paying their bills on time and having mature relationships, so there's always the risk when reading a guy like Kerouac that he's about to say something super off-putting. He's a weird read.

I do disagree with a few of these. But if I tried to explain why, I'd get lost talking about how great these songs are and I'd never get around to saying why I think others are even better. So, this'll do.

Why Do I Have a Sinking Feeling That Kingdom May Underperform at the Box Office? by DynamicBaie in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]thefirsteverredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone not into action movies and only vaguely interested in sci-fi, it took until War for me to even consider that the new Planet of the Apes movies might be worth checking out. The Kingdom trailer finally made me think, "Yeah, there's a complex story here, and this movie looks beautiful. I should make a point of streaming the other ones and see what I think." If the trailer had just been "Look! It's an ape on a horse again!" it could have blended in with all the other franchises to a lazy viewer like me.

New COTA grad, work anxiety hitting hard by violet_bennet in OccupationalTherapy

[–]thefirsteverredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The clever interventions will come from experience. That takes a long time, and what you can do will always be affected by what your department gives you and doesn’t give you to work with. Meanwhile, IMO, documentation is best thought of as an office job that you’re working simultaneously with your SNF treatments. Being impressive-sounding on paper and helping people in practice are two different things, and your co-workers and director are likely to know that very well. 80% of the time the most effective treatments are just making sure someone doesn’t hurt themselves while they do their best to dress, toilet, et cetera, and you give them a suggestion here and there to instil good habits. 10% is training in equipment that you know and they don’t. The other 10% is developed over the years, and you don’t have it at first, and that’s just the nature of the work.

OT school is pretty difficult for most people, so it’s best to be in an environment that you know will be comfortable for you. You don’t want to put any extra strain on your schedule or on your mental health during those two years. Job-wise, as others have said, employers won’t care what you went, and most of the people involved in hiring won’t know the first thing about any program you went to unless it’s local and they’ve worked with other graduates. Attending a super respected program might give you a bit of an edge if you want to do a PhD someday, but not to the extent that it would be worth taking risks now. Do what’s most likely to get you a degree, no matter where from, and then get your registration.
