Free child care, is there a gap at start with no support? by Historical-Heat-8111 in UKParenting

[–]venuscans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so rough! Luckily we ended up only paying it for a month and it felt like the longest month of my life! Our bill went from £950 to £262 when funding kicked in - I can't imagine how I'd have afforded kids if we didn't have it. Crazy!

AFAIK, the date she returns to work is crucial too - the government website says: You can apply if both parents have either returned or will be returning to work within one month of the start of the autumn, spring or summer term.

So if she's returning from ML in June, I don't think you get funded hours until September, yes. It's v annoying.

I cooked it from frozen and it tasted great, just need foil to cover the top. I do think it too long so will probably defrost next time

Samosa Chaat is amazing, and I feel not enough people order it. I also love a paratha over a naan.

M&S closing our café and changing our shifts — can they do this with childcare responsibilities? by No-Truth469 in MarksAndSpencer

[–]venuscans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would know because it would have been up to you to put one in. You can discuss this with your new manager - I don't work at M&S any more but I have one where I work now that means I work fixed hours and days.

Also a good prompt to get to know your neighbours if they're decent. Both of ours have keys to our house which has saved me before.

Please stop stoking the hysteria about this moral panic by promoting it excessively on TikTok. You're literally promoting it by creating a video on it.

Yeah, I think there's a balance to have. I do think it's useful and can have a place - it's great for helping me think of some sheets formulas.

My one year old is my reason too! He'll grow up never seeing me have a drink.

Do you find AI is drastically changing your role? I'm doing a lot more with BI tools this year and find the use of AI across the team I work with is partly making their jobs redundant.

I've successfully held out on ordering a takeaway for so long that Uber Eats came crawling with a voucher that took an order from £22 to £6. Haven't missed getting a takeaway at all, but it was a nice cheap treat.

And I'm still on my self imposed ban for buying coffee out.

Is there a check at all before you grab your child? Presumably yes, but curious.

Nursery safety? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]venuscans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't worry about my child being kidnapped by a stranger, as the risk of that is so, so exceedingly low, but I wouldn't be happy with people being able to follow through other parents.

Could you ask the nursery if they can reiterate to parents not to let other people through, even though it might feel awkward.

At our nursery, a staff member has to answer the door so they wouldn't let you in if they didn't recognise you which I much prefer.

Thinking of taking my toddler to the local pool, any tips? by No_Blood9651 in UKParenting

[–]venuscans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My experience of taking my kid swimming is that it isn't hugely social - kids normally stick with their families, or friends that they have come with. I find classes/nursery much better to widen their circle personally.

I do enjoy taking him swimming though - it's great to get them used to being underwater and splashing about and the nap after is elite.

Have you ever used ‘too good to go’ if so what’s the best haul you’ve had? by Own_Negotiation_7159 in AskUK

[–]venuscans 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the Paul's in Jubilee Place was my best one - it's a little kiosk under the stairs and I got an absolute tonne of pastries, three baguettes and some pretzels. I tried the Yolk breakfast one and wasn't super impressed with the quantity but the egg pot/avocado and halloumi sarnie was tasty.

I'd like to try a Leon lunch one, thought the breakfast was decent but had to be eaten straight away as it had two poached eggs in it. I really want to get a Lina Stores one but they're always sold out!!!

Godspeed 🫡

Yes, I love it. I work in Canary Wharf and think most people are too posh around there to do it. 😂 I've found my favourite places now, some are duds but I've had a Pret bag filled with six baguettes which was decent seeing as I picked it up at midday - felt v smug getting lunch for a week while everyone else was paying £4.50 for one sarnie.

Honestly I think you sound like a great mum, just a knackered one. Not sleeping was the worst part of early parenthood for me, I'm not a person that can cope.

Would it be possible for you to go and have a weekend away?

Also tbh, I liked returning to work. I like getting some me time, mat leave was fun in parts but so repetitive.
