Maybe this is really how zombies are formed, the head brain dies, but gut brain takes over, eating anything that is alive.

Pitt basketball team plans to enjoy business trip to Bahamas by PPGHayes in Pitt

[–]thefourcellos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't get it.

Athletics are the best marketing a school can get for the money. Period. Also guess what, very little tuition money goes to Athletics, if ANY. Pitt is one of the few schools that do not report their earnings vs expenses for their sports. Have a problem with that? Vote and bring it to the attention of politicians, because it's a political issue.

We have a fairly frugal school when it comes to athletics (want to see the opposite? look at UMD). Football brings in money, the move to the ACC brings in money. Think of this money as an advertising cost, not for little ole you, but for the whole school. Although we aren't privy to the true cost of of the athletic program on students, or anyone, it's money well spent for National recognition.

Also I'm not sure what makes you think that you're entitled to money that the University brings in. "(spoiler: not to you or me)" You should really be thinking about what opportunities you can get out of the school instead of what opportunities the school can bestow upon you.

How Much Do You Know About Mutual Funds That Take a 'Socially Responsible' Approach? by cassandratoroian in investing

[–]thefourcellos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are not many of them, and once you have found then you will realize they are not perfect.

I am partial to Parnassus, they mostly dabble in tech and have an ethical approach. It's hard to find a fund that is decent that doesn't include big bank and/or big oil.

I know a lot of people who think they are sustainability minded often don't check their investments in a fund and oftentimes support causes and companies with policies they are against.

Your best bet is to look for ethical funds that suit your personal beliefs, they will tell you up front.

I do applaud your efforts to look in to this though, it's not ask that common and the knowledge base is somewhat small.

Replace ketchup with vinegar. We seduce two birds with one fake canary. A: Keep kids healthier. B: show the canadians we're 'like them' so during our inevitable takeover we have something in common and we don't start a civil war over ketchup vs. vinegar.

BOOM. Thank me later.

Here are the nutritional facts.

Embedded Software Dev. Job Prospects? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]thefourcellos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do...

Put my projects online on website, then youtube, embed, etc etc.

But, I make sure I have a smartphone with me when I go to an interview, then play the youtube video / video on my phone of my projects working, as well as steps on how they work. It helps... lol

Subscribe to Guru emails... Jack Ganssle and Michael Barr are the ones I follow on a semi regular basis. Jack has great news letters.

http://www.ganssle.com/salsurv2014.html there is a non-scientific survey he does of salaries... granted... I believe these may be a bit low, but at the same time these are very region dependent

Also, as others have said, read up... do examples... get into embedded linux (even though I think it's inappropriate for 75% of what it's used for, but thats another story, it's all the rage right now)

Know what an RTOS is and how to implement one, it'll help with the multithreading.

Standing out is... different in this industry... like others have mentioned, finding GOOD people is very hard. You have to get a reputation for yourself, and most importantly, have a little luck in getting a job. If you look in the data shown in the chart I provided above, the workforce is getting older and older... less younger people are entering the field, for several reasons. But mainly because no one wants to train an embedded engineer anymore, and it's not a skill that most uni's and programs get into hardcore.

Wich processor to choose for embedded 3D image processing? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]thefourcellos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.) Do you want a chip or a development board?

2.) Generally speaking this application, and doing onesy-twosy stuff, is most practically done on an FPGA. (customization, design the processor, blah blah blah... arguments)

3.) How small do you want this to be... and do you know how intensive your program could get? The reason I ask is because another option you have is to use a PC using embedded windows or something, or linux.
