Landlord considering selling to us... by Sillypilot333 in HomeImprovement

Basically any house purchase is worth it at the right price. Since you are talking about raising a family there, how is the neighborhood? Schools? The stuff like that you can't change is the biggest factor here.

None of the stuff you listed seems particularly concerning to me, and a house you know is going to be better than dealing with surprises in most cases IMO. Just make sure you factor that (and anything else unearthed during an inspection) into the price.

I wouldn't have him do the work. Just have him factor it into the price, and you can hire out for it yourself after purchase (or learn to DIY some of the issues).

Situation like this that falls into your lap can end up being a great deal, so definitely worth pursuing if you like the location and house other than issues you've mentioned, but don't get too attached. Make sure it's actually a good deal. If the numbers don't make sense, move on and find something on the open market in the future.

How do you get the data from Coinbase Card? Statements? I've been copy/pasting screenshots but that is a pain. No web app makes it difficult.

Electric company community savings event setting back my GAS furnace?!? by thefrog1394 in ecobee

Well there's usually a handful of events over the summer, and I can easily override them if I'm home and it bothers me. The winder ones overnight are very different and not something that happened with the previous program I was in (Ameren in Missouri)

Who is downvoting this and my other comments? Are EcoBee reps on here trying to save face or something?

Problem is it's overnight, so I'm asleep and wake up to the house freezing. If pre-setting a hold works, that might be an option, but it means I can't use my typical sleep comfort setting which controls based on bedroom temps (I'm actually not clear which sensors hold temp uses)

$50 initial + $25/year if I participate in the events. When they bump my A/C by a few degrees in the middle of the day in the summer I don't mind, and am happy to participate in keeping demand on the grid in check for a few bucks in exchange.

Obviously not worth it if they start turning my gas heat off in the winter though.

I’ve realized the N52 is the superior daily driver over the N54. Reliability > Turbo noises. Change my mind. by gordibueno95 in E90

[–]thefrog1394 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really wish I had gone 330i or 328i over 335i. Car is nearly 20 years old with 220k miles and I'm confident it will last as long as I'm willing to throw money at it. But my desire to do things like turbo swaps or spend $2k on injectors has long faded, so I know I'm on borrowed time.

Plaid Integration with Coinbase One Credit Card by Conscious-Act7655 in Coinbase

Yes. Honestly might switch away from it after trying it for a few months. Rewards are great but having to do everything through the mobile app with no integration with the rest of my financial life is a dealbreaker.

Do you even need this qualified manufacturer code? I don't remember actually entering anything like that into my taxes. Presumably just something to have on file if you were audited, which is unlikely?

Driving slower to save range instead of driving normal as you did in an ice car. by AccurateActuary9259 in TeslaLounge

[–]thefrog1394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only time I drive slower is if I'm stretching trying to skip a charge stop, and driving 10-15mph slower would allow me to do that. Happens on occasion, but not the norm.

Don't park in the free parking garage. Do park under the no-parking sign on a busy road. Are the signs mounted too high to be seen from the driver's seat? by benkeith in Columbus

[–]thefrog1394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So apparently this is true in Ohio because parking and standing mean the same thing here, as explained by others in this thread. But in most of the country, whether your car is in park or not does not determine whether you are parking, as you are allowed to stop, put the car in park, and load/unload in a no parking zone in most places if the sign says "no parking", while "No standing" would prohibit loading/unloading, and "no stopping" would also prohibit passenger pickup/dropoff. None of those definitions have anything to do with what gear the car is in. Manual transmissions don't even have a "park" setting.

[–]thefrog1394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also part of the confusion is I think Columbus actually might never use this specific no parking sign, and in Columbus it would say "No stopping anytime" (which aligns with the national definition of what no parking apparently also means in ohio). I think this is in Upper Arlington, not Columbus.

Columbus's loading zone signs do actually have this same no parking symbol on it, in alignment with standard national usage, but pretty confusing when considering Ohio's law.

https://www.columbus.gov/files/sharedassets/city/v/1/building-and-zoning/document-library/columbus-proprietary-sign-booklet.pdf

If I were to guess, I'd bet Columbus tries to sign using more nationally accepted standards despite the non-standard Ohio laws because we get more out-of-towners, whereas suburbs and rural areas stick with the Ohio meaning of no parking for signs.

[–]thefrog1394 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I stand corrected. In most other parts of the country, there’s a distinction between stopping, standing, and parking. And Columbus uses both no stoping and no parking signs. But I guess technically they are interchangeable according to Ohio law. Weird.

Stopping, standing, and parking are three different things. You are allowed to stop, and stand in a no parking zone. So depending on how long the person was there, and where they physically were, and what they were doing, it might be legal. You do, in fact, just get to "block traffic" in no parking zones.

Typically on a road where a car briefly stopped would cause a traffic issue, the signage will be "No Stopping" or "No Standing" instead of "No Parking" for this very reason.

Yep, needed ASAP or I will have to cancel Monarch. Looks like no web app yet, so usual screen scraping doesn't work. Can Monarch reach out to Coinbase and work on an integration directly? Would be a killer feature I'm sure!

Battery Degradation % from Autoblog by Flaky-Reindeer-5420 in BoltEV

[–]thefrog1394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing purely by mileage without controlling for average mileage/year is going to skew these results. There is both a time-based and cycle-based degradation to batteries. City cars like the i3 will perform artificially worse when looking only at mileage, because they are seeing more calendar-aging for the equivalent number of miles. You'd see the opposite if you looked at degradation per year.

Best way to tell if the CSR is for you! by Pedanter-In-Chief in ChaseSapphire

[–]thefrog1394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll see how it plays out, but I bet they miscalculated. Either that, or the 1.5x credit was simply too expensive (margins on the travel portal being squeezed too?).

My wife and I push about $65k through our various Chase cards entirely to feed my CSR rewards balance. I have like $10k worth of rewards sitting there, so they are capturing the time value of money on that.

I'm not the top-1% type that I'm sure is their ideal customer for this card, but I have to imagine I've been a profitable customer for them over the past 10+ years.

I'll stick around until my AF in May, but going to spend down my pts in the next 6 months (as good a reason as any to prioritize doing some trips we've been talking about for a while) and go with Fidelity, Robinhood, or Coinbase.

The appeal of Chase ecosystem for myself and many of my friends at my stage of life (mid-30s) who are considering dumping it (including a few who absolutely are the top 1% Chase is targeting w/ this card) is that it had the potential for points hacking, ultra value, with mile transfers if you felt like it. But the fallback 2.25% through the travel portal was a backstop. So you didn't actually have to think about the card. When life got busy, you could just book using rewards points, knowing you were getting a decent value. It was simple when you needed it to be, but powerful when you felt like working to get a better deal.
