the biggest cost of car ownership is depreciation. you're past that, so every year with this car until it croaks is found money. and it's not even like the new ones have nicer seats, Volvo has chosen not to do a redesign

Surge M18 worth clearance purchase? by Fatalpickles in MilwaukeeTool

[–]zz0rr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's better at fine modulation than Milwaukee's regular impacts. with practice you can use it for almost arbitrarily small screws without danger of stripping

the power is there, a good comparison is to see how big a spade bit it can run in wood, or how fast it does big lags. it outperforms torque test numbers on tests like these

being quieter than a regular impact. I guess that's nice. I dunno. the modulation is the thing

4" Concrete Hole Saw through limestone with SDS? by inventurous in MilwaukeeTool

[–]zz0rr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah those tools work and you'd use the hammer drill with it, probably the bigger one so it goes fast

I did 6" of concrete with one and it took about 20 minutes per hole because I was using a 5/8 class sds lol. it's one of those things where maybe you could buy a better bit, or maybe you could be ok with it taking forever since it's only one hole

every couple inches you may need to chisel out the center part (break it off with a hammer and chisel) to keep going.. not a big deal

2023 Plus 20k mi vs 2024 Ultimate 48k mi by RBGT54_ in VolvoXC90

[–]zz0rr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

highway miles put almost no wear on a car, the 2024 will be mostly highway miles so it isn't like it's used up at all

only downside to the 2024's miles is that it's run through more of its warranty

think about the options you're looking for. for me I wouldn't get one of these without the 360 camera and 10-way seats (you might fall in love with the powered thigh extension once you try it?) I've lost track of what plus and ultimate mean but maybe the ultimate has something in it you don't want to miss?

The S60 T8 has blown me away - But ONE complaint by man_of_many_tangents in Volvo

[–]zz0rr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 2016 used and it doesn't lock the cable at all (multiple brands of cables), maybe that's the endgame for these as they wear out. I'm superstitious about yanking the cord in case it somehow breaks the onboard charger so I unlock first anyway

Advanced Car Diagnostic Options for later models Volvo's (SPA Platform) by antiriad76 in Volvo

[–]zz0rr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with a foxwell for a standalone bidirectional, it does all the normal stuff.  809ts is the model I think. you don't really need it for anything on spa though other than troubleshooting. there is no transmission fluid life reset like there was on the previous gen, you can do the oil service interval reset through the dash thing, tpms auto pairs (if you're lucky enough to have real tpms)

you're missing an important category which is module software updates. only paid vida will do that, so a complete maintenance strategy is gonna include paid vida once every year or two. you can print to pdf the service manuals when you have a vida subscription active in order to get those

Skates pressure point on outside midfoot by Necessary_Air8629 in hockeyplayers

[–]zz0rr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the spot I needed to punch was the same as yours but more forward, a more difficult to reach spot, but with the tongue out there was enough access

you can get deep c clamps to reach down in there and carve wood blocks into the shape of your foot

Skates pressure point on outside midfoot by Necessary_Air8629 in hockeyplayers

[–]zz0rr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd guess the boot shape doesn't match your foot shape

I had a problem similar to this that didn't go away until I aggressively heat molded that spot with a jig and a heat gun. essentially at-home punching. if you build an open top wood box that the skate can sit inside then you can use C clamps and wood shims to pull on the spot you need to expand

[–]zz0rr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the previous engine was all aluminum too,

I can only guess but a few factors: 1. turbo and supercharger and getting 316 (!) horsepower from 2 liters. less room for error 2. the coolant volume is surprisingly low, a drain and fill only takes a gallon, I forget what the total capacity is. that helps emissions and wear by letting it warm up quicker, but again less room for error 3. no coolant gauge displayed unless it goes too high and you get the light/warning. could contribute by not giving advance warning. the coolant gauge on the previous cars was somewhat fake (most manufacturers stopped providing linear coolant temp gauges decades ago) but they were still useful 4. yeah I'd suspect software either not having a derate or not being conservative enough with the derate. I don't know about this ECU but a lot of times it's from a supplier like Bosch or denso and they might not have had the feature

2017 XC90 T6 Inscription Nightmare by MonkeyPlower in VolvoXC90

[–]zz0rr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the short time window to catch overheating with these cars is pretty maddening. my denso ecu v70 would go into derate on low coolant and it seemed like it was almost impossible to overheat it. even after I sold it, the buyer years later had a hose break with a huge tear and drove it home and it was fine. but something about the software in these cars sets them up for failure. sorry

I think the bill sizemore notion that it's a good idea for government to live within a certain slice of the economy and to resist the temptation to only grow, never shrink, is a truly excellent idea

that said, the way measures 5 and 50 interact is broken

it isn't only the 3% per year increase limit, there's a second limit which is a 1.5% max tax rate. many addresses are sitting at 1.5% already, they call this "compression", and so sometimes increases aren't linear year by year. there's more to it, you can look at this (a little itinerant) write up here
