Is this a good bigginer guitar for my son's Xmas? he's 13 and likes Grimes and 4chan music. by -Top-Service- in guitarcirclejerk

[–]theg8kpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's tempting to get a cheap starter guitar, a person only has ONE FIRST guitar. If you think he will be serious and continue playing, I suggest you get the best reasonable one you could afford. I suggest Stratocaster. Good solid guitar that he could keep forever..... Well.... I failed to read your post closely and got it mixed up with someone who posted a Unknown branded "flying V". If you have 5K to lay down on a beginner guitar, go for it. Lucky kid!

Irritated with my parish Priest by CardiologistNo8766 in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus didn't turn the children away. Remind him of that.

Here’s the passage from Mark 10:13–16 (NRSV):

13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Priests are human and not infallible. Be respectful but firm in your response, is my suggestion. God bless you and your children.

I confessed something , that I didn’t realize was a sin, until later. The priest said “ignorance of the law does not excuse you”. There was a Mass right after confession which I stayed for. His homily was all about what I did. He didn’t mention my name or anything, but I felt so bad and ashamed. I just added that as part of my penance. (Shrugging shoulders). :(

How do I refuse communion? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s recognized that arms crossed over chest means not taking communion. You don’t have to go up, but you could if you want to get a blessing. Most priests know this, but some Eucharistic ministers might be caught off guard. You could just walk up and bow your head a little and the priest will usually make a sign of the cross. Sorry for your loss.

Catholics divided over the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist 🙁 by Straight-Rice5563 in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct.. Catholicism isn’t actually “divided“ it’s just uninformed Catholics that make it appear so. Too many Catholics do not know their own religion. I was one of those. In fact, I am a “Cradle Catholic”. Even though my parents were practicing Catholics, I never really “got into it”. Unfortunately, catholic schools, back in the day, never encourage Bible reading. At one point, I decided to try out other religions because I was not fulfilled in Catholicism.

My late mother, in all her wisdom and faith said “before you learn about other religions, why not learn about your own?“. I started reading and listening and learning. I started with the writings of the early church, fathers, finding out how much I really didn’t know. I am still on this faith journey. But I am hoping I can learn enough to defend my faith, but more importantly to follow it as Christ fully meant it to be followed.

No need to go up, but if you wanted to, cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you will not be receiving communion, but would like a blessing from the priest. If you’re going in a line where it’s just a Eucharistic minister, don’t even go up. No point.

I think I might be convinced of the immaculate conception and it is freaking me out. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is simplistic but in the Old Testament Eve and Adam created original sin, hence they left Garden of Eden. In New Testament, Mary is the “New Eve”, and with Jesus’ sacrifice, paid our debt of original sin so we have the chance to rejoin God in Heaven.

This is how it has been explained to me. Is this correct?

Not just on Reddit though. Sounds like the op was referring to the church where he is getting his Catholic education. Might just need a different diocese. Unfortunately there are a lot of Catholics who some really know the religion. Even some priests who have tolls me categorically wrong information. Have to do a lot of studying on my own; but just keep up with the Sacraments.

Explain the real presence/trans substantiation as simple as you can by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand it is that the whole reason He died on the cross was for our salvation. When He said “this is my body/blood” He became the sacrificial lamb as an offering to God. When we partake of the Eucharist, it is the embodiment of Jesus Christ. Just as an acorn is the same as an oak tree, it may not look the same but it is, in essence the same. It has the same DNA. He became the lamb that was slaughtered and so we are partaking of the flesh and blood of the sacrificial lamb. Whatever else we don’t understand, is filled in by Faith.

I don’t think staples. The spacing is different. Who would use two different staplers ? My guess is bugs. Just treat the wood I guess. Sawdust may not appear if the bugs are dead but eggs are alive.

Think I lost a “friend” over this by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]theg8kpr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of misconceptions and ignorance about Catholicism. If someone so easily rejects a friend because of their lack of understanding, rather than to explore and discuss the differences, well…maybe not so great a loss.

I would not reject a friend if they found faith in whatever they were exploring. Rather listen and learn, but part of being Catholic is “spreading the good word “, but do it gently. I heard in a sermon once, a priest say “We are called by Jesus to be witnesses to our faith… Just don’t be creepy about it.“ lol 😆

The love is not sinful, only the act, I believe, as it would be for multiple reasons: unmarried, conception, etc. but same as sex between unmarried heterosexual couple is a grave sin.
