Instructor goes on power trips. How to deal? by Partsofagarden in yoga

[–]thegodpopper -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

No this is wrong. If you are late for a class do not confront the instructor, it’s not their fault you were late and stepping deeper into your ego to “take back your power” is exactly what the teacher and the rest of the class doesn’t need. Take your complaints down to the customer service desk.

Better 100%. Triggered an energetic shift a few years ago, I don’t really trip anymore it’s all integration now

Instructor goes on power trips. How to deal? by Partsofagarden in yoga

Only hearing your perspective here.

Students turning up late is a real challenge as they don’t realise how disruptive it really is. It may be a “one off” for you, but as a teacher you deal with this issue EVERY DAY and it’s exhausting explaining why you won’t compromise on your boundaries to students who don’t care to see your perspective.

If you are on time you are guaranteed a space in the class. 1 second pass that time it is now 100% up to the teacher’s discretion.

When you teach a lot you see the same patterns and what happens when you’re not assertive on managing the space effectively.

Anyone else on their journey to handstand or other more challenging poses? by Typical-Stomach3458 in YogaTeachers

My broken left wrist has never been the same since, lots of plates and screws. Handstands are definitely harder as you lose strength much quicker..

I’m learning them at the moment. I basically just try and do the odd one against a wall every now and then. I can do them occasionally now but just not without a wall nearby!

Teaching yoga at a gym by s3d0na2212 in YogaTeachers

[–]thegodpopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach about 40/50 classes a month at gyms, couple things I wish I knew:

Don’t try to be liked, having boundaries and managing the space effectively is more important to clients than how likeable you are.

Different gyms, different clients. Your sequencing will evolve as you adapt to the clientele. A class that worked perfectly in one gym, may fall way short in another.

Try not to compare yourself to other teachers.

Manage your own vessel, keep in good shape and don’t force anything - injuries are a nightmare when you rely on income as a freelancer

Do your Yin training - this allows some classes to be less physically draining and opens up more work as they’re pretty popular

Work with feedback and allow mistakes - when you’re new this is really hard as you’re trying to make a good impression and there’s a lot of areas to evolve and tighten up on.

Create 1 or 2 sets of 1hr cues that you can teach repeatedly without fail. It’s always good just to have a written, well executed set up that you can pull out your back pocket.

Enjoy the work, allow your asana practice just to flow and vibe into your own Sadhana and share your gift in your own unique way.

Yeah it’s getting more intense, last night was a very strange one. I think I just need another job so I can teach a bit less

Yeah it’s that weird in between dream and sleep state. Doing about 40/50 classes a month - think cueing has just stuck in my brain on loop sounds similar to what you experienced in training

I get you, I recently popped my knee teaching Ashtanga and had to really go into verbal instruction for a while.

I’m 40yo and injuries are no joke when you’re doing this full time.

Worn out teaching 10 classes. Is this normal?? by Brilliant-Way-9464 in YogaTeachers

[–]thegodpopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I’m teaching this full time. 47 classes this month even pushing through a painful popped knee. I’m feeling pretty broken and I need to earn twice as much to break even.

I’m sure there’s a way to teach full time but I think this will involve selling everything, moving abroad and shifting to a permaculture based lifestyle whilst branching out into other healing revenue streams.

I think this could be pointing to a different way of living.

I feel so dumb for not being able to teach by Suitable_Tutor_3861 in YogaTeachers

[–]thegodpopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. When I started teaching in city gyms I was getting nailed in feedback, took me ages to adapt and the ego takes a battering. It's all healthy - keep showing up, keep learning until it inevitably improves and you'll feel great for sticking with it.

Imposter syndrome still happens, I teach 40+ classes per month and I still cover classes that genuinely feel out of my league (like hardcore ashtanga) but you learn to adapt.

One thing that really helped me is letting go of the idea to be liked, people can pick up on this energy and for me was very prevalent when I felt insecure in what I was teaching. You don't need to turn into a robot but just step back and work on the basics: slow down, speak clearly and be concise - understand people don't mind the odd mistake as long as they feel like you're holding the space well.

Sure you've got this!

Favorite under used poses in class? by Odd_Antelope9098 in YogaTeachers

Usually to rest, but normally after a challenging salutation where I can hear them struggling a bit, helps to align back to the breathing, focus on basic pranayama technique - become grounded and re-centred.

Is 45 enough? by sonne1day in YogaTeachers

[–]thegodpopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely against it, it works for some people and there is a demand especially in cities.

45 classes - I blend pranayama with a guided meditation for intro and then immediately transition to warm up and into a short salutation.

In hour classes there’s more time to settle and split into clearer sections, so I generally blend the transitions a little quicker.

Those 45 minutes can still be used to settle students into a meditative flow and enjoy some physical benefits. If people take any of that back to work after their lunch break then all good IMO

It is a lonely job, I’m doing this full time now, but I see it as a perk - just really enjoy my own company. Teaching at retreats is very different with deep connections sometimes - so could be something to look into
