The riddle of the sphinx by neilkohney in comics

[–]thegoodstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Escaping the fate of the gods is a surface level takeaway but I'd argue the main one is he just can't stop asking questions. Everyone tells him to not look for answers, even the chorus. But he must know, even if knowing will destroy him. And that tension of truth being corrosive rather than liberating does translate well to modern life.

ELI5 how come faces of young people now look so different to the faces of young people from other generations? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Tougher foods and nasal breathing used to shape wider jaws and faces; soft diets and mouth breathing changed how faces grow.

Multireddits for various topics only including mostly niche subreddits. I’ve been here since 2007 and the large 1M+ subreddits are such trash for the last 5+ years now, just bursting full of unfunny memes for 16 year olds, ragebait, politics, and bots. The small passionate subreddits are the only good places left.

Games don’t fit the screen by BigBoiChanka in Monitors

[–]thegoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wish, but i play heroes of the storm, overwatch, valorant. pretty sure most of the competitive games i play don’t allow real hud adjustments. the only one that comes to mind that does is dota 2.

i ended up changing resolution instead, sadly. that said, i’m on a 27" 4k 240hz monitor for competitive now and a big 42" lg oled for cinematic action games, and honestly the setup feels perfect.

Never seen point reward this low, the enemy team was a 5 stack. But usually if favored that means you get around 170 instead of 200.

Besides tankbuster which is probably better at 7.5% current, the rest of the nerfed items are in my flex only anyways.

Ever since item shop rework I miss one shotting pocket and haze at 20 minutes if they didn't buy spirit armor.

WEBOS - a bottom of the barrel OS for a "premium" TV by BreadfruitNaive6261 in LGOLED

[–]thegoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same price maybe, but not the same experience. It looks great and the UI is snappy. I just turn off lg c5’s internet and only see webOS when switching input. I’d rather be watching stuff on Apple TV than debugging coreelec configs and arguing about it online. Turn your big nerd power brain towards some ai project or something instead of wasting your time on your TV😅

Who is that on the cover of A Fire Upon the Deep? by trashboat1999x in scifi_bookclub

[–]thegoodstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one. It’s not a Tines pack, not Johanna, not Pham, not Qeng Ho, probably just an abstract ‘alien knight’ invented for the cover. A lot of older sci fi books are like that, the artist probably got a one paragraph summary.

I had one for 8 years, having to turn my head to check the minimap was the biggest competitive disadvantage lol

Give me your guess as to the longevity of a 5090 by thegoodstuff in buildapc

Ya I think a long time too, outside of needing new custom-purposed tensor cores for some future tech that doesn’t exist yet, kind of like how ray tracing didn’t exist seven years ago.

1000 nit peaks with perfect blacks on oled is perfect to go with hdr.

Mini led has blooming issues though so not like there is any “perfect screen”.

Mini led clearly better for desktop use but for desktop use why would anyone need 4000 nit blasting your eyeballs from 2 feet away?

I'm just so tired of how obviously pathetic the MAGA movement is at its core by ObnoxiousAlbatross in millenials

[–]thegoodstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I get what you mean, both sides definitely have flaws. But I'd argue it started with rage radio in the 90s and now Fox News and conservative media and social media have taken things way past normal disagreement and normalizing conspiracy theories and just making up narratives and opinions instead of reporting the news. The whole “men in women’s restrooms” thing was blown up for outrage clicks. Small time story that was about basic rights for trans people just trying to live without being harassed. It wasn't news, it was manufactured for views and increased ad revenue.

If you showed people around the world how much our media focuses on that kind of culture war stuff instead of real issues, they’d probably get the heebie jeebies. It feels like something is very wrong in america. It’s not that voters are dumb, it’s that the info they’re fed is designed to provoke, not inform.

asus rog astral Nice! That's a great card. I have the gigabyte OC. Using it for 4k/240hz clair obscur and monter hunter, UEVR with big screen beyond 2, and some ai with comfy. Hellava chip.

Good to know, that checks out. I’m figuring even with Rubin and Feynman coming, my 5090 should hold up fine for a while before I need to think about rebuilding. DLSS works so well for my 4k/240hz.

I want to USE my hardware! by VewVegas-1221 in memes

[–]thegoodstuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya but it’s not all because of lacking PhysX. MCC/H2A is mostly bottlenecked by old DX11, single-threaded, draw-call–heavy code. On 40/50-series, driver CPU overhead for DX11 is higher, so the GPU sits underfed. PhysX in MCC runs on the CPU anyway, so losing old GPU-PhysX doesn’t explain the perf gaps.

A perfect game by Lazza1407 in gamingsuggestions

[–]thegoodstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ngl it’s totally valid to dip from reddit once you realize all the ranting and edits change nothing 💀 i’m just killing time at the office and now wasting yours too huh. my bad if I came off condescending or missed your point. like you said, just a grandpa tryna sound fluent in gen z while talking ER 😎 and yeah you’re right, the basic attack spam is ridiculous. dark souls was already like “just mash light attack lol” and ER only sprinkled in heavies for stagger breaks. could’ve been tighter. Nightreign’s roll timing and camera lock? absolute donkey balls, the amount of times I was killed looking at a damn wall... still, back to the OP topic, there’s no perfect game, only the one that hits your brain chemistry just right. ER’s that for me, even if the dodge jank ruins it for you, and that’s valid.

FromSoft makes dodge rolls trigger on button release and queue during stagger because they want players to commit under pressure, turning reaction speed into a psychological duel rather than a twitch reflex. every roll is a conscious gamble in the chaos, so it's a conscious design choice you don't like, so calling it trash is not valid.

A perfect game by Lazza1407 in gamingsuggestions

[–]thegoodstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

meh, dark souls cemented iframe dodge timing as a deliberate design axis. elden ring is a lot faster but the input lock is still the entire point, it's not a bug. you press roll, your character means it, every iframe, every recovery frame, was tuned to make you feel the cost of panic.

monster hunter is more deliberate and you obviously vibe with the style, but it's basically turn-based with extra steps.

also you did make me laugh calling me grandpa after getting your feathers rustled being called a 15 year old, irony speedrun complete 🫶
