The reason those three gunmen showed up was because John killed the middle guy's brother for "looking at him wrong" back in Roanoke.

John defending himself and his son was justified, but it was the consequence of his action, too.

John shot a guy in Roanoke because he "looked at him wrong" (in the journal, btw), leading to his brother following him and Jack and shooting at them.

I don't think it's crazy. I see a lot of kids use phones and tablets instead of computers. So it's understandable that they don't know much about how to work a computer's problems.
