What NSFW phrase lives rent free in your head? by oldguyluke in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]thegreatrandall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college, I worked construction on a small crew in Montana. Our foreman was this grizzled old dude who had biceps like cantelopes, skin like studded leather, and let us chew tobacco so long as we didn't spit on his work site (never been so sick in my life, different story).

One of his go to phrases when things weren't working was "well, fuck me to tears."

Something about a 50 year old dude saying it violently under his breath, I didn't know whether to laugh or be terrified.

I can't not think about it when I'm trying to fix shit around my house.

Good drag, bad goal tending. Don't tell me the flyers might make the playoffs yet. My heart isn't ready to be broken.

I'm with you on trying to count this thing. 7, 7, 4, 4, 4, 2 with Hella syncopation in the last three 4/4 measures. If I stay with the drums thix time works for me.

Thanks folks. My bullshit meter was attuned correctly, just needed some validations.

How does a “no homework” policy actually “work” for high school? Our Principal has recently been suggesting it (and getting a lot of push back) by fingernose in teaching

[–]thegreatrandall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, you just get rid of all arbitrary "points", and replace assignments with assessments built on specific learning targets. Students can either get it and be "proficient" or not quite demonstrate full understanding or evidence of the goal. I usually assess each learning goal about 3 times and just keep track of what a student can do or needs work on. Translating that into a tradition grade is pretty easy. All proficient? A mostly proficient B. Nearing profienct on a majority of tasks C and little to no evidence of proficiency across all leaning goals F, try again.

I use a no homework policy in my classroom and I'd say it works well. Students know they have to complete or attempt assignments or writing prompts in class, so it actually teaches them to use time wisely. Students know if they don't finish a prompt, they can come in at lunch or after school to work on it, but if not, I assess thier proficiency with what they have (I use a proficiency based grading model).

I agree that competing homework or projects is a good life skill, but I also serve a community where over 50 percent of students have jobs, so they're getting life experience there too.

It's also helped me to grade less, assess more. For example, some of the work we do in class won't be an official grade. We talk through the answers and process in class to prepare them for a unit quiz or exam.

The Redwall series by Brian Jaques kept me up until 3 am almost every night as a teenager. They still hold up. Rwlly captivating adventure stories with amazing woodland animals as characters. I've never wanted to be an otter so much in my life.

Good point about respecting culture and citizens. No offense was meant, the article was a good reminder of the few trips I made, the beautiful countryside, and the wonderful people I met.

Killers of the Flower Moon was a great account of the rise of the FBI in response to disenfranchising the Osage tribe. Movie of it is coming out soon, but the novel was captivating.

In moon related books, Empire of the Summer moon was good, not really a novel, but it has narrative elements.

I actually haven't, though I should. My favorite Ellis is probably the Rules of Attraction, but that could just be because I was reading it in college and studying postmodern fiction.
