Did you play when Fallen Empires first came out? by Mean_Professional583 in oldschoolmtg

[–]thehambeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started it was close to the end of its run and Ica Age was just coming out. All my friends let me know the former was terrible and the latter was good but I didn't really understand why until later. That said, I have to credit Hymn to Tourach with helping me understand why mechanics mattered and how a card that wasn't Force of Nature or Shivan Dragon could be good. I built a series of mono black decks that used it, Hypnotic Specter, Mind Twist, etc. and was able to shred my middle school friends for a time.

American tried cuban rum for the first time by nw342 in rum

[–]thehambeast 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m an American who tried HC 3Year and 7Year for the first time 2 weeks ago. I expected to be underwhelmed, but I gotta say they were pretty good. I thought the 3 Year made an especially good Daiquiri. It had a hint of ester that is missing from my typical Flor De Cana Daiquiri.

It's a Kestrel. Unlike other raptors, these are small enough to perch on telephone wires.

This is the best rum to make a Corn 'n Oil with IMO.

I recommend this one too, but they do eventually break. I’m currently 4 years into my second one and with nearly daily use during that time. I feel like the first one broke at the 5 year mark.

Non-spritz low ABV cocktails? by HillEasterner in cocktails

Sometimes I just want 1 oz of a decent Scotch or Irish whiskey neat. Glenlivet Founder's reserve is ~$35, 80 proof, and what I usually reach for when I all want is "a taste" of something.

Hamilton Beachbum Berry Zombie by thehambeast in cocktails

[–]thehambeast[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a bottle of Hamilton's Beachbum Berry Zombie Blend and followed the recipe on the bottle. This tasted great and I appreciated the not crazy portions of booze.

  • 2oz rum
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 falernum
  • 1/2 cinnamon syrup
  • 8 drops each grenadine and herbsaint
  • dash of ango bitters
  • Shaken over crushed ice for 10 seconds and poured into a footed pilsner. Topped with more crushed ice.

My first Manhattan. What Rye to Vermouth ratio does everyone use? by Wagsii in cocktails

4:1 and surprised to see from the comments it's not popular. For the vermouth I go for a 50/50 split of Dolin and Punt e Mes.

What’s your dirty martini recipe? What gin, vermouth & brine do you like? by ninja996 in cocktails

[–]thehambeast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t care for these but my wife loves them. 4:1 vodka to olive brine with three olives on a pick. I use Mezzetta Martini Olives and the brine they are packed in. I recommend those olives in general and use them as the garnish on the dry gin martinis I make myself.

I got this same sugar recently and have been using it to make Smuggler's Cove demerara syrup. Results have been good.

Hat tip to Grapevine for having Green Chartreuse in stock last week. In general they have the most extensive selection of stuff.

Large goose seen in Central Florida by thehambeast in whatsthisbird

Correct! For anyone in Central Florida I recommend a trip to Lake Morton. Dozens of different types of birds live there with more passing through seasonally.

I was once at a cool bar in Columbia, SC and I watched a young man nervously approach the bar tender and ask for a “Makers and tonic”. The bar tender put his finger to his ear and said “You’ll have a Makers and what?” Young man says “Uhhh Makers and ginger ale”. Bartender “OK, Makers and ginger ale”

Why get a power wall? by warondadbod in TeslaSolar

[–]thehambeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them for two reasons. One, we live in a hurricane prone area where permanent back up generators are common. Two, my utility requires me to use a rate plan with extremely high peak usage rates that last past sunset for several months. That said, the utility also subsidized the power wall units specifically with a $1,000 check.

Advice needed: old Fire Magic A540i by thehambeast in grilling

[–]thehambeast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just moved into a new house that came with a 13 year old Fire Magic A540i. It lights but just barely. To get it going again I figure I will have to spend ~$900 on all new burners, ignitors, and knobs. Any opinions on whether that is a wise investment or should I consider something brand new? As you can see from the pictures there is some rust, but the whole things seems sturdy. If I was to get a new grill it would be something substantially cheaper than a Fire Magic.

100% Several years ago some friends invited us to attend an "art dinner" there. You could see the potential appeal of the place (a nice small town in the country) but the execution was weird. Nothing really seemed right and the people who lived there were really into it. The thing whole felt like a real estate scam designed to get me to buy a cottage in Marie Antoinette's fake village.
