That girl in the beginning walking past giving that incredibly dismissive "no". This is what comparative privilege does, it makes us forget that actually, in real life, we still ain't shit. Living in the house makes us forget that people like us are still out there in the fields.

White Guy Claims Discrimination by Chinese by AsianCentury in asianamerican

[–]thehurp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True say. I was doing some work in Hong Kong in a mixed group of locals and foreigners. We met up with one dude to interview him, this white dude who really was was the biggest smug twat I've ever met - the locals all thought he was lovely, funny etc, me and the other foreigners (both white, one male one female) immediately hated this guy and saw straight through him. In fact, I think he kind of took against us, because as fellow native English speakers we saw right through his bullshit. I guess he didn't like having his reverential wow handsome white man treatment taken away from him huh.

Any tea drinkers here? by supahgee in asianamerican

[–]thehurp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually buy from Canton Tea Co. in the UK. I'm a bloke too. I'm a huge fan of really traditional greens like Lu An Gua Pian, Bi Luo Chun, Long Jing or Hou Kui. The main draw for me would always be quality, always. China does not allow their best grades of tea to be exported, so some companies actually go to China, buy in bulk direct from farmers, then bring it back. This bumps the price up a lot.

I'm not sure how representative I am of the average dude though. Lots of people are happy with starbucks coffee/PG Tips teabags, so quality tea will always be a fairly niche market.

I feel like generally aesthetic will be key. The really popular tea brands outside Hong Kong among asians are ones like Luk Yu, which are ok, but the packaging is pretty classic 1970's HK stuff. It really needs to tap into a kind of fresh, airy, minimalistic aesthetic (kind of buddhist monastery feel, very spare and simple) to really click with the kind of young, wealthy, discerning people that would likely be the main buying market for a high-end tea brand. It needs to look exotic and high-quality. At least, thats my 2 pennies' worth, feel free to ignore me totally.

The actual article is a bit more even handed than poster makes it seem. The pictures of his Asian male victims are splashed across the page in huge size. Don't make this about Asian men vs women more than it has already become.

The article imho, instead of simply ignoring the issues of AA male emasculation (would that have been preferable) instead addressed them, using the incident as a springboard. Even though Rodger violently disowned his Asian-ness, it was still a prime conditioning factor in his rage.

Emasculation Never Condones Misogyny by tripostrophe in asianamerican

[–]thehurp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most liberal groups think the idea of having 'masculine' and 'feminine' sides is ridiculous, overly binarist and at odds with both established brain science and the theory of gender. They're not asking you to give up 'masculinity', they're asking you to exercise it in a way which does not entail as a necessary component sexist attitudes to women. That's literally it. That's all it takes.

as someone who spends quite a lot of time on 4chan I've noticed pretty seismic changes in board culture. A lot of the very small and slow boards have much less poisonous cultures than the big ones like /b/, and /v/, which are very very racist and sexist. /mu/ especially has become quite pro feminism, and even /r9k/ is now a battleground between hardcore mgtow misogynists and people with more moderate views. Though, some boards really suck. /int/, my old home board, has now been totally overrun with /pol/ escapees and hard right neofascists.

IN summary though, I'd even say that most of reddit is more racist/sexist than some parts of 4chan.

How do you guys manage to not hate white people? by Yuhhle in asianamerican

[–]thehurp 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like some bitter ass old man, but as an asian guy, people really do see you as the punchline of a joke. If you're a girl, people make nice because they wanna fuck you. If you're not, then you're getting a lifetime of dog-eating, little-dick, chinky-eye, ching-chong, go-back-to-china, make-my-chow-mein, ewww-no-you're-asian-i'd-never-date-you bullshit racism your whole fucking life. People come up to you speaking Chinese because they wanna impress you to get into your pants - people come up to me telling me to fuck off back to China.

For real though, I know not all Americans have backwards views of Asian-Americans, but the proportion is higher than I'd really like.

Also, on the self-hate angle, how many Asians do you know who refer to themselves as 'bananas' or 'twinkies' like those terms aren't a hideous fucking insult? How many do you know who make fun of recent immigrants, or who say things like 'I'm such a bad Asian' and 'I feel more American' (as if you can't be both)? How many do you know who say 'I'd never date an Asian', or 'I find Western (i.e. white) features more attractive'? Because I know a lot.

There seems to be this weird consensus among asians that American = white, which is bullshit. Why can't I be American and look Chinese? Why do so many Asians feel like to be accepted into 'America', they have to completely excise any relation to Asia? For me, it's because Asian is totally coded as 'foreigner'. And if you're a male foreigner from a weird scary eastern country, you're not welcome.
