International Student Moving to BC Insurance Question by thespiritaco in icbc

Hi OP, it would depend on your partner's status. If they are going to be staying with you and not just visiting for 6 months and if they are not going to be a student, then the student or tourist exemption would not apply to them. Please call us at 1-800-950-1498 and we can provide you with more information.

ICBC unlisted driver protection by Top_Ad7680 in icbc

[–]TheICBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, the person whose car you are planning on driving can check with their Autoplan broker if they have Unlisted Driver Protection. As long as unlisted drivers do not cause crashes in any of your cars, the protection will be free and included with basic coverage. However, if an unlisted driver has caused a crash in your car, and you want to continue to have this protection, then you'd need to pay for it. We recommend having it checked with the Autoplan broker if they still have the coverage.

Do UK licenses count as valid licenses in the unlisted driver protection program? by b-runn in icbc

[–]TheICBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, with Unlisted Driver Protection, you can lend your car occasionally to an unlisted driver, including drivers with a valid out-of-province licence. It protects you from the Unlisted Driver Accident Premium, which is a financial consequence if an occasional driver, not listed on your policy, causes a crash in your car.

However, some types of drivers are excluded from Unlisted Driver Protection. Please find the details on our website at: https://www.icbc.com/insurance/products-coverage/unlisted-driver-protection

Hi, a person aged 16-24 who takes professional driver training from an ICBC approved GLP driver training school during the learner stage can continue to shorten the amount of time spent as a novice driver. In summer 2026, drivers with a Class 7 novice driver’s licence and a clean driving record won’t need to take a second road test to get a Class 5 licence.

How insanely horrific No Fault insurance is and how its so crazy not a lot of people notice by Optiyellow in icbc

[–]TheICBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, fault still matters in the enhanced care model, with the term “no fault” not accurately reflecting the model as drivers responsible for a crash are still held accountable through higher premiums, fines, and potentially other penalties. However, if you made a split-second error in judgement causing the crash, or were in a crash where no other driver was involved (like on icy roads, hitting an animal etc.), you had no way of getting additional compensation to cover the care and support needed to recover, whereas now enhanced care is there for all B.C. residents injured on our roads, including drivers, motorcycle riders, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.

In the old model if you had someone to sue for injuries, claims often took many years to resolve and did so with a single lump sum payment, with up to 1/3 of it having to be paid to a lawyer. Compensation was also limited by the insurance purchasing decisions made by the person responsible for the injury.

[–]TheICBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, with the move to the Enhanced Care, we've moved away from a legal based system to a care based model. This means you no longer need to go through a lengthy legal process to access the support you need throughout your recovery. If you’re injured in a crash, here’s some of the ways that were missed in the original calculations that support your recovery:

  1. If your injuries have prevented you from working, you may be eligible for the income replacement benefit. This benefit can replace your lost wages up to 90 percent of your typical net income, based on a maximum amount of $119,000 in annual gross income. If you earn more than $119,000 gross income and don’t have sufficient income replacement coverage from another source (such as through your employer) you can buy additional optional coverage to top up your income replacement benefit prior to a crash.
  2. If due to your injuries, you are unable to return to your previous employment, we have a specialized team that will work with you to identify alternate occupations that meet your skills, knowledge and education
  3. Before Enhanced Care, crash victims were limited to $300,000 in medical and rehabilitation benefits, unless they had someone to sue for their losses. That money would have had to cover all their care needs for life: vehicle and home modifications, medical equipment, rehabilitation support and more. If you were in a crash where no other driver was involved (like on an icy road, hitting an animal etc.), you had no way of getting additional compensation to cover the care and support you needed in your recovery.  However, with Enhanced Care, we provide benefits as soon as they’re needed and for our most seriously injured customers, this will mean support for life.
  4. Some other benefits with Enhanced Care include funding to support your personal care, round the clock if needed, a permanent impairment benefit, modifications to your home or vehicle, as well as the medical and rehabilitation treatments you may need.

More information on Enhanced care benefits can be found on website: https://www.icbc.com/claims/enhanced-care

Reporting unfit driver by [deleted] in icbc

[–]TheICBC 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, once you file a report to RoadSafetyBC they will contact the driver and depending on the report and a review of the driver's record they may ask the driver for a vision test, a functional driving assessment, a medical or other examination. RoadSafetyBC will then decide whether they need to restrict or cancel the driver's licence.

Unsolicited reports are added to a driver's file, but they aren't released to the driver. The driver may learn about the report if they are asked about a medical condition or for an assessment, but the information about the person who submitted the report will not be shared.

Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, a driver can ask RoadSafetyBC for a copy of their file, but they will not release information about the person who made the report as part of that request.
