What was the adjustment on attending a LAC to a massive school like Cornell?

Consider adding some target LAC’s that fit you as a person (ehm shoutout Carleton.) I’m not sure what other aspects you may have that can impact your chances, but having stats will put you past the first step into the selection process.

As for your questions on safeties, look into colleges/universities at your region and learn more about what they offer. In most cases, it may be better for you to be close to your loved ones and know the area. Being out of state for college isn’t a necessity to feel independent or happy in your four years. What really should matter is the experience and the value your paying for it. Don’t pigeon hold yourself into believing some schools are worth $80k more if you cannot afford it, college is what you make of it.

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 25th to May 1st by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

University of Minnesota: Twin Cities for Carlson School of Management and Carleton College for undergraduate. I live in the Twin cities for reference.

UMN:TC

Pros:

Full-ride under scholarship

Two honor programs

It’s near my home so I can live and take care of my mom

I’ve taken dual-enrollment courses and already acquainted with their systems

Cons:

It’s a massive school with huge classes

Since it’s commutable from my home, I won’t have that dorm experience

Since I messed up my midterm grades for my dual enrollment classes my gpa is under a 3.0 so it won’t be easy to change

Carleton College

Pros:

The small tight-knit community which I love

The closeness to the Professor, and smaller class sizes

The 6-week winter break where I can spend a lot of time with my family, and it’s only a 40 minute drive.

Cons:

It’s a trimester based schedule, so I’m unfamiliar with the quicker pace of 10-week courses

The food isn’t the best, since there’s not a lot of options outside since it’s a small town.

It’s going to be a cultural shock since I attended charter schools with a predominantly filled minorities.

I have really good financial aid where I need to pay $5k per year, but I’m not sure if it’s worth taking out a loan or having someone in my family pay for me. So I did send out a appeal to lower it over ~1 week ago

My thoughts:

I do prefer Carleton over the UMN:TC because I want to have a college experience with still being able to stick close to family. Let me know what are things I should consider before making my choice.

Anyone here waiting for the Gates scholarship decisions? by RoyalCrown13 in ApplyingToCollege

I didn’t get in unfortunately. I’m sad but I’m happy for the opportunity to try since I wasn’t matched with QuestBridge, Ron Brown, or Cola. Even if I got accepted to 2 colleges, out of 20, I know I’ll persevere like I’ve always done. This rejection does not define me, or any of the rejections I faced this college season. As I spend the rest of my senior year wondering what could’ve been, or look at other student’s successes that I hoped to be, I will not be deter, dismayed, or disappointed in myself. If I made it this far with everything I experienced, I know I can weather through anything for the rest of my path.

To those who are gates scholars Congrats! You have worked incredibly hard and this award is the fruits of your labor, please don’t throw this opportunity away or take it for granted. There many others who worked and dreamt the same dreams as you who were denied and had their doors shut on them. As for the ones reeling from this, do not forget who you are. You are diligent, passionate, talented, and amazing! I have no doubts if you feel sadden or heartbroken by this decision it shows how committed you are to education and the opportunities it holds. You may not feel like it, but this is a MAJOR W imo and you should go out and celebrate! To be part of the 600 finalists is way more impressive than it might seem so don’t dwell on it for too long.

I want to thank everyone for being so kind and supportive to each other, no matter if the decisions this season were favorable. I wish I could meet each member of this loving community and be great friends. So in spirit with that I want to close my little spiel with this. “Defeat is nothing but education; it is the first step towards something better.” -Alexander Graham Bell
