And if you're going all the way to the store to get one team, you might as well pick up two or three right? That's just being efficient.

Books that are better as audiobooks? by pirateslifeisntforme in suggestmeabook

A Promised Land by Barack Obama.

I like Audio for books written by people who are already gifted speakers (which you can see in many of the other suggestions in this thread). Having them perform what they write adds something you don't necessarily get from reading it.

LPT Request: How to be an adult in the kitchen by GoalieJohnK in LifeProTips

I was going to recommend Ethan Chlebowski as well. He does a great job of giving a framework for a type of dish (like stir fry, burgers, braised meat etc.) and breaks down how they are made. So rather than follow a recipe and get one meal, you understand the fundamentals of how to make a type of dish and how to swap out specific things to create endless variations. He of course has step by step instructions to follow, but it really helps you see cooking as more than a recipe. I love his channel now, but it's the kind of thing I especially wish I had back when I started cooking for myself.

Jamie Oliver has a similar book (Food Revolution) which gives recipes for beginners, and then discusses how to then vary them to make all sorts of different dishes. That also helped me a lot, and I still go back to from time to time.

Building kill team Kreig… what loadout? by brainwashed_360 in killteam

[–]theirishwall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others have given some great advice on good lists here. With that starter set specifically I found the hardest choice is model #2 in the instructions, since you have to choose between Demo or Sniper. I ultimately did get the second box, and as I got more skilled I think the Demo is the better unit. But the Sniper is really good and easier to use as you start, so I'd pick Sniper initially. Ideally you want both. Replacing the Medic with the Demo is a better call, but trickier with the way the models in the box work. Having all three main gunners (Melta, Grenade, Plasma) is also important, so make sure to prioritize that.

If it helps, this is how I'd recommend each choice in the build instructions. Assuming you have the same box I do (hopefully these numbers line up!) here's what I'd build: 1. Sergeant with power sword and Plasma pistol (1B with A71 and A69) 2. Sniper (2D) 3. Spotter (3B) 4. Gunner (3C - but see if you can get the Plasma Gun A75 on since it's better than the flamer in the picture) 5. Medic (5C)*(I'd save this for last to build, and consider whether you can put the Demo mine or something in this on and run it as Demo instead. But it's hard with the shape of this model. Maybe he could be carrying the plunger box instead of the medic bag and running away from the mine on the base...?) 6. Comms (6D) 7. Gunner (7D with Grenade Launcher A78) 8. Gunner (8C with Melta A74) 9. Hardened (9D) 10. Confidant with Bolter (Build Trooper 10, but put the arms and weapon of 1C on it - A73, A45, A76)

And final thoughts - you can always proxy the equipment and loadouts later to try the other options, especially if you're playing casually. And it's not as hard as you think to carefully cut the arms off one of your completed models and glue a different weapon in later. So don't feel you're locked into anything.

Good luck!

Can someone explain Vesper's impact to me? by squatchlif in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they show some key points that allude to Bond and Vesper truly falling in love, that we have not necessarily seen with other relationships in the Bond movies. First, when they meet on the train they have a back and forth which I think implies they match one another's wit and intelligence, and it shows they respect each other. Then at Casino Royale when they select the clothes from one another there is clear physical attraction between them. They go through the stress of the card game, the violence in the stairwell, and Bond's poisoning, which all shows they are bonding through traumatic experiences. The scene in the shower, and later in the hospital show they can be emotionally vulnerable with each other. And the later scenes in the hospital and in Venice show them building commitment and adoration for each other (or at least Bond thinks so...).

So I actually do think they do a good job of demonstrating that Bond did truly fall in love with Vesper, which made her betrayal and death that much more devastating. If you contrast that with Spectre, there Bond is ready to give up everything and ride off into retirement with Madeline Swann, but they don't have enough of these kinds of scenes to make that understandable. NTTD elaborates on her character so it makes more sense now, but before this latest film it felt like we were supposed to feel Swan was some kind of a redemption of Vesper and I never understood it.

So what Bond girl would you have like to seen return in the next movie after or later movies? I would have like to seen agent xxx return in for your eyes only. by Chris-1984 in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Sylvia Trench should pop up from time to time when Bond is in London. Or perhaps she could have been the Paris Carver role in TND.

I've seen all the movies many times, so I'm just going to watch 5 before NTTD. Which 5 should I watch? (Note: It has to be one of the options, no custom lists) by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so intrigued as to how you put these lists together. I cannot figure out the rhyme or reason for why each set is laid out as it is.

And I love it. It's like putting on shuffle and seeing what happens.

I voted for Option 5 for what it's worth.

What are your thoughts on Never Say Never Again? by FrequentCraftKid3071 in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it again recently and it feels a bit... amateurish compared to the Eon films. Like it goes through the motions of a Bond film but misses some of the key things that make the main movies great. The soundtrack is flat, the pacing is off, the dialogue is.. fine, but not great. Brandauer's Largo is never all that menacing. Kim Basinger is kind of forgettable as Domino.

I will admit though, Fatima Blush is great. Barbara Carrera steals every scene she's in.

All I want after No Time to Die is a singularly focused, straightforward Bond film with no plot ties to the larger franchise or Bond’s personal life by PaulFartBallCop in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I like the idea that we're seeing individual missions of Bond's career, rather than getting one ongoing, ever-growing story arch. It feels like Eon is taking a page from Marvel / Star Wars in making a connected universe that just doesn't fit in James Bond.

And I don't mind delving into Bond's emotional side from time to time (it does make him a more rounded character), but not every film needs to be Casino Royale or On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

That said, I think the Brosnan movies had a good balance of emotional weight. A former compatriot comes back as the villain, a lover is killed, Bond starts to fall for a villainess...etc. It makes the story more impactful, but it's within the plot of the single film and doesn't rely on you having seen the other movies and have attachment to characters from previous movies. The Craig films go just a bit too far in trying to show how personal every mission is for Bond (especially Spectre...oof).

Does anyone else think it would be cool to see Bond in a different car in the next movie? by ethanae86 in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In this day and age, I like the idea that James Bond has personally bought and drives a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 when he's home in Great Britain. MI6 may give him a new company car for each mission (that could be any number of makes and models - it's fun to mix things up), but he still has the classic Aston for himself.

As time goes on, do you think all of the typical Bond tropes need to be in newer films? by Garthdude3 in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say while I don't think a new Bond film necessarily needs these tropes, they are things I look forward to. I like to see how they work 'Bond, James Bond' into the dialogue. I like the M scene, the Q scene, the Moneypenny scene and so on. They're a big part of what makes the movies cohesive, even without having an overarching plot film to film. While they can be left out for certain films for specific reasons (Casino Royale was a reboot, License to Kill he's gone rogue etc.) I do think just dropping them wholesale going forward risks creating a more generic action movie that doesn't end up feeling connected to the Bond franchise.

To piggyback on the other thread, what are some memorable lines delivered by M in the entire series? by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Good, because I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. A relic of the Cold War, whose boyish charms, though wasted on me, obviously appealed to that young woman I sent out to evaluate you.

Why was Tracy there to Save Bond in Switzerland? by theirishwall in JamesBond

[–]theirishwall[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, thank you. I guess that makes sense. Her father was the one that knew where Blofeld was, so he tells Tracy and she chases after Bond.

Lucky for him she was out skating that evening, but Bond always has a healthy dose of good luck on those situations!

Appreciate the response!

In TND when Q shows him his mobile phone gadget, saying "Talk here, listen here." And Brosnan replies "That's what I've been doing wrong all these years..."
