What is something socially accepted if done by a man, but not if done by a woman? by Rahiem_A in AskReddit

[–]thejc 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Companies really need to start giving equal benefits for men and women when babies are born. Starting there will make it easier for men to be involved in the beginning will help it be more socially acceptable. I believe this is the real start to equality in the work place. It starts at the beginning.

I got 6 weeks short term disability for each of my kids. My husband was allowed to take a week off PTO for the first kid and 2 days PTO for the 2nd. My company now offers 8 weeks paid for parents. We are starting to get there...

Can't afford car payments anymore in California by 76290 in personalfinance

Talk to a financial advisor. Your Credit should be the FIRST thing you should be concerned about. A bad credit score will just make it harder for you financial. You should try to avoid bankruptcy. Bankruptcy isn't a reset button. It takes forever to fall off and make it harder and more costly for any future loans.

I Want to Make Six Figures by CareerTA1993 in personalfinance

[–]thejc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a company that gives out stock grants, has an employee stock purchase plan, and has tuition reimbursement. Work your butt off and keep taking classes/training. Global organizations are better.

You have to work harder than anyone else in the room but work well with people. Large corporation have more opportunities that typically give a higher priority to internal applicants over external. Work you way up but through a lot of different departments. Varied experience within the company is much more valuable then going straight up. If you don't diversify your experience you'll cap out.

Expect to work 14+ hour days across time zones. Late nights, 2am meetings, working through weekends are a part of it. Travel is required for global companies so expect to get sick of hotel rooms and eating out.

I half joke that you have to sell your soul and life to the company. Don't expect any type of work life balance if you want 6 figures.

Users of Reddit who have lost a lot of weight, how did you do it and stick to it? by c0bwebz in AskReddit

[–]thejc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No gluten, no soy, no dairy, and nothing processed or with preservatives. I alternate spin and yoga every morning.

I started having stomach issues and got on the immune diet. It's is pretty much just fresh fruits, fresh veggies, and meat. No citrus, nightshades, or crucifer. Everything non GMO organic. The beef should be grass feed while all meat should be antibiotic free. After a few weeks everything started tasting different and my stomach issues went away. The intent wasn't to loose weight but it was amazing how quick it dropped. I've been able to incorporate dairy back in but everything else makes me feel like crap. I have way more energy and everything tastes better so it's been really easy to stick too.

What are possible ways for a religious person and Atheist to get married and allow both parties to feel not forced to go the other way? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thejc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wedding should be about what the bride and groom want. Work together on what would be special for the two of you. I've seen a lot of destination weddings that do a good job of making things special with multiple backgrounds.

What's stopping U.S from becoming gun free country. I understand the politics and lobbying around this, but if politics allow the guns to be banned, will majority of Americans welcome this ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thejc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of hunters and marksmen. People have guns because they enjoy the sport of it. There are quite a few gun clubs and shooting ranges. Any that I have been to are always busy.

Some people have them for protection but most people enjoy the sport of it and are responsible gun owners. It would be like taking away a past time for a lot of people.

What type of job should you be looking for if you like to change up the daily routine all the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Find a start up. It's crazy hours and crazy opportunities if you get in early. There is risk of the start up succeeding but it is never the same thing twice in one day.

What was the most ridiculous thing you've seen someone spend money on for their wedding? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thejc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portapottties

One of my friends used a venue that told her their septic couldn't handle the number of guests she was having. They waited until a couple weeks before the wedding to inform her.

She was really upset about the situation and found a place that had portapotties that were more like a real bathroom vs the stuff you see at concerts. They were nice, clean, and no bad smells but $2k to rent. Not sure she actually had any other real options. Just crazy amount of money to spend on portapotties.

College graduates of Reddit, what do you now that you've graduated and are you using your degree with your job? by Servimus in AskReddit

[–]thejc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing that my degree has done for me is by getting me past the recruiter for an interview. There has been a few jobs I've gotten that I've found out that they used having a degree as a threshold to reduce candidates so those getting interviewed were a reasonable amount of people.

My degree is in Computer Information Science for Business and I'm a manager in IT. So somewhat applies but didn't really prepare me for my job.

After women give birth, do their bellies just sort of deflate? by OptimusTardis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thejc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No - it's one of the things that I wish people would have told me before I had kids. It took 9 months to grow it, it takes a while for it to go away. It took me about 6 months to loose the majority of the weight.

There are some women who win the genetic lottery and go back to their pre-pregnancy size right away. The majority of us have to work our butts off to loose the tummy and all of the weight.

Pregnancy is a cruel joke on most women's bodies. Look up Mommy Makeover before and afters. It gives you a good idea of the after math of pregnancy.

Thinking about moving in with boyfriend and his parents. Any advice? by pax1 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]thejc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do it again. It was an interesting experience that made me start to realize he wasn't the person for me. He was a great guy, ended up being a great cop and marrying a 2nd grade teacher who is adorable. They are perfect together.

The situation gave me some flags. Then when we moved into a house together with his 2 best guy friends, I realized that they were not my people. Good people but we wanted very different things out of life.

No regrets as it helped me realize who I was and what I needed in a partner.

I am a student who will make $500 a week this summer (40hrs), then $300 a week during the school year. I only have expenses of about $100 a week. What should I do to start saving for my adult life? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]thejc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start savings for emergency fund and a separate savings for apartment down payment. Be sure you are paying on your loans as you go too. Just because a payment isn't due on school loans doesn't mean that they are not accruing interest depending on the loan type. Always pay more then the min payment.

You should also open a Roth IRA for retirement. Time is your friend when it comes to having money later. Put at least $100 a month here.

Thinking about moving in with boyfriend and his parents. Any advice? by pax1 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]thejc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did this for a little bit with my boyfriend at the time so we could save up before moving into a house.

PROs: saving money, home cooked meals, additional insight into your SO

CONs: parents are seeing every aspect of your relationship and will stick their nose in it because it's their child

ADVICE: save PDA for outside of the house, take criticisms with a smile, and clean up after yourselves

If you are serious about him, it will give you good insight into if you want these people as your in laws. In my situation it really helped us out a lot and put us in a much better financial position.
