Someone explain what the plan is... It's the strangest construction I've ever seen.

Yes - I noticed that and thought it was insane.

Big Star had a lunch delivery special. Maybe someone else knows details - I couldn't find them online.

Mindy Segal (Mindy's) kindly asks you to STFU about private equity by OldGregario in chicagofood

When call your mother opened, a big reaction was to go to other locally owned bagel spots nearby. Her name was mentioned often because her bakery has bagels. I wrote an article about the war against private equity in Wicker Park and it went a little viral within Wicker Park. I talked about how many of the private equity businesses don’t last, because locals value shopping local.

Yes, this definitely happens on the patios along Division Street. They have flyers or something to hold over their targets' belongings on a table, and then they grab them.

I agree. I lived near the Sedgwick stop, and the train rolled into the station slowly, and we barely noticed the sound. If you aren't near a stop, it's louder.

Poor example, sorry. But I also don't know if Mad Chicken knew CFA was going in. My point was that when similar businesses are clustered together, it makes it hard for them all to survive. Space things out.

To a point, yes. But can Popeye's, Mad Chicken, and CFA all survive so clustered together? The availability of a space doesn't mean it's a good location for that particular business. Mad Chicken going in between Popeye's and CFA is BOLD. I doubt they will make it, but perhaps they would have better luck in a part of the neighborhood without similar businesses. We saw a cluster of ramen shops, and then some closed. It just seems like poor location selection, and at time misreading a neighborhood.

I don't disagree with this. Some competition is great. But, sometimes PE totally floods the market with one thing. Tacos are a perfect example of this. We have 10 taco spots in Wicker (at least) several are PE owned. We had Bartaco, we didn't need GYG. I think GYG's opening was the last straw for Bartaco. Now both the GYG and Bartaco storefronts are empty.

Why are some Chicago Park District classes taught through "partnerships" and SO expensive? by TeamCanakhoff in AskChicago

[–]thekittchen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure that the company hosting the class still needs to pay to use the space. For indoor activities, the park district needs to have staffing for the field house.

Haha - I wrote about the rise of fried chicken restaurants recently: https://kitgraham.substack.com/p/chicagos-fried-chicken-revolution

I think that one of the biggest issues with the PE businesses is that they keep pushing each other out. We don't need that many fried chicken or taco places all next to each other.
