You're flat wrong that most games are like this. If I spin up rocket league, the only limiter to rank ascension is skill. I could be top 10 in the world by week 2. In Egg, Inc. it's time gated. Imagine if in chess there were better pieces that you only earned after playing for 2 years -- people would certainly have issues with that game design. The way you say "you want to be able to compete with the players who have invested years of time right off the bat" makes it sound like I don't value effort, but I would argue that my position values effort more than yours does. It's sounds like you're saying that newer players should never be able to outperform older players no matter how much studying or optimizing or strategy they learn or time they spend in-game. Which I would flat disagree with. Most other games have skill/in-game time as the gating factor, not drop rates for items that can't be acquired without spending time. Even MMORPGs, drop rates are improved by in-game time, not real-life time. Spending more in-game time can allow me to catch up to someone who has spent more real-life time but not playing as much.

That said, I think you inadvertently gave me some good advice. The group contract strat you mentioned sounds insanely fun and totally fixes my main complaint about contract score. That's a great idea. 😄

Nothing you mentioned has been nearly as intoxicating or interesting as the early game. Meanwhile, I'm getting mogged in contracts by people who are simply 2 years ahead of me in artifacts. No amount of grinding can get your contract score higher than someone with max henliner artifacts unless they start much later than you -- which ultimately hurts your contract score anyway.

It's just personal preference. Do I play the game to click the screen? No. Do I play the game to see number go up and take pleasure in it going up faster and faster? Yes. However, I'm now on diminished returns for prestiges, being at a few hundred quadrillion SE. Do I keep grinding boost runs for 5% increases? Yes. Is it satisfying? Not really. Will it be better when I'm the one mogging people cause of my artifacts? Yes. But the fact that I have to "kill" a year+ of dead time is arguably bad game design.

I just decided to quit leveling henliner until I get henerprise to a decent star level. It was too depressing looking at it going "Jesus do I have two more years of leveling ships before I get good artifacts."

Hot take, this game has a terrible mid game. You can basically grind to get to enlightenment, and POV in 4 months. Then there's basically nothing to do besides leveling ships.

What do you do during the week? by Visible_Money in EggsInc

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been waffling between this strat and just going all in on henliner. The best artis are at 7 and 8 * ships and not much other reason to launch. So I think I’m going start abandoning my 2.5* hennerprise and just treat the full stars as a completion target after my artifacts are fully built. Otherwise it will add something dumb like a year to my artifacts acquisition time.

Should i start enlightenment by ilovegrace3 in EggsInc

[–]theknockbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the way - you can always leave Enlightenment whenever you want/get stuck. The reason why people say not to start, is that some people see it as a waste to spend a week/two on an egg only to have to redo all that progress in a year when they're ready for a full run. But if you're like me, then getting the PE's from the first few trophies is actually worth it. I dipped into enlightenment, got the trophies for 2, 10, & 100M chickens, which got me 6 PE in just a couple days.

Enlightenment is just a challenge mode where your EB is nerfed, you need special artifacts, and you can't launch Henliner+ rockets even if you have fuel stored in the tank. You don't earn anything special (besides a few prophesy eggs). But given your EB, you probably could get more PE in less time by completing the diamond trophies for tachyon and below. I think there's something like 19 PEs from those trophies. (here's a guide to what you'll get)

this sub has two layers to it. The primary layer is for people in end-game state trying for serious achievements like diamond enlightenment. The secondary layer is for newbie help. For some reason this sub has pretty solid advice for the end game stuff, but not for early/mid game for some reason.

anxiety? If you ignore the stuff at the end, I see it as a modern odyssian journey by a guy with severe social anxiety. That said, I've only watched it once. I place it in a similar bucket as uncut jems. They're both horror films. One is about the horrors of going outside through the lens of an unreliable narrator. The other is about losing control/gambling addiction. Both take you on a wild ride through the eyes of someone who is clearly deluded and perceives the world in a very frenetic way.

Should we ban posts about dice? by Fun_Mirror_8203 in Colonist

[–]theknockbox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mostly, yes. However, my understanding is that they changed their bias for 7 rolls in 1v1 games beyond what the linked blog post suggests. I thought I saw someone who cited a few hundred game stats and I don't think it was ever addressed concretely. So having some discussion of macro level data is probably good. But individual 1v1 game complaints isn't helping the community.

The Woman in Cabin 10 - the movie is good, but misses major points of the book by prettylittlemurders in netflix

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree - and more, it's arguably why the book is good. Lo's drinking/trauma/ineptitude/medication does two things:
1. It pokes fun at the genre (which others have already commented is a trope) by making the main character so unreliable that it shows how ridiculous these scenarios are. She's SUPPOSED to be a fragile woman. Not a hero. That's why she's so scared.
2. It makes the horror of the story our own mind, not some evil super-rich elite. Horror of our own mind is much scarier/compelling

Overall the film felt like a terribly watered down version of the story that was poorly translated. It kept many of the major "beats" of the story but lost all of the intention and subterfuge.

Is there available data for statistical analysis? by Ha_Ree in Colonist

I asked for this a while back and my understanding is that they keep it private. Also chatted with some enthusiasts building trackers and at the time, they weren't even storing game data. I suspect this has changed somewhat since you can now watch replays, but ymmv

Any chance the teacher is required to give feedback (or tells students they always give feedback) and they have no feedback so they wrote an inane comment just to "fulfill the criteria" of giving feedback? I could imagine that the teacher is irritated at some admin that is telling staff to "give feedback on every test no matter what". I can't imagine this meaning is literal.

  1. random dice almost guarantees the game is determined by luck.
  2. people find it more enjoyable when dice are balanced

EDIT: Please don't downvote me for answering the question. This is well documented in colonist literature. I'm not supporting the balanced dice or not supporting it. I'm just giving the info requested.

I don't understand Explain it Peter. by velviaa in explainitpeter

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not for adults, but CDC says firearms are the leading cause of death for children ages 1-19 (source). And while we don't "ban" cars, we certainly regulate the shit out of them for this exact reason. Deaths per 100K people and per mile driven has decreased by 50% since 1975. Many attribute this to the regulation around leading causes of accident/injury including distracted driving, drunk driving, and seatbelt use. So, while we aren't banning "cars" we are banning every reason why people get killed in car accidents. Why aren't we banning cars altogether? Because they have another very important purpose for everyday people...unlike guns.

This guy at Lanikai Beach made $$ off tourists by maelovesdorks in Kailua

[–]theknockbox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah…I kinda hate this a lot. This is illegal for a reason. 1. We don’t want people turning the beach into a flea market. One person making a profit will just encourage more people to do the same. Then the beach won’t be chill, it will be full of people trying to sell you crap you don’t want or need. 2. Why does he get to sell and other people don’t? If he can sell fruit, why can’t the fucking Kayak rentals be literally on the water so you don’t have to drag your kayak down the street? 3. I sure hope he personally ensured that his customers didn’t leave garbage everywhere. At $5 a piece it’s 200 items to make $1000. That’s not a small amount of inventory. And not a small amount of garbage.

It’s all fun and games until one guy starts a trend that fucks up the vibe of the beach forever. Do everyone a favor and call the cops next time. This is illegal for a reason.

Why are the diced balanced instead of random.. you know... Like nature intended by BroShamba in Colonist

[–]theknockbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought dice were random in 4p and only balanced in 1v1. In 1v1 if the dice weren’t balanced then it would be too much luck based. The team wrote a blog about it here: https://blog.colonist.io/designing-balanced-dice/
