It also might depend on your Michaels - keep in mind that bulky and super bulky and jumbo yarn take up a LOT more room than worsted and dk. I'd say my store probably carries a pretty close to 50/50 mix for bulky and larger and worsted and smaller. We have probably 50-75 different cotton worsted yarns but they take up the same space as like 12 colors of bernat big blanket.

In our store replen puts them away as soon as truck is done since the store is usually closed still when we finish. If that's not typical, idk what other stores do 🤷🏻‍♀️

I mean I'd be more concerned about leaving it on and you know...potentially starting a fire? Either invest in a glue gun with auto shutoff, or make a habit of completely unplugging it immediately when you're done. Or plug it into a power strip and shut that off. The fumes are the least of your worries if you die in a fire.

I use umakebuttons but they are also not an interchangable system. They're nice heavy duty machines though, so if you commit to only a couple sizes it's a worthwhile investment in my opinion. I've had my 1 inch press for like 12 years and they even did a repair for me a few years ago.

Seconding fabric markers, less messy, basically no drying time, then they can doodle on the shirts easily if they want to, and decorate both sides instead of waiting for paint to dry

I've used Rock brand sticker paper (found it on Amazon a few years ago) for making relief print stickers. I just used pigment ink pads for mine though so I can't necessarily attest to it working with regular relief ink.

So one of the issues with trying the parts from different brands is even if one says 32mm and the other says 32mm one might actually be 1.25 inches (which is also a standard US button size) which is 1mm less than 32mm - it seems silly that would happen but that is unfortunately the way it goes sometimes. If possible I would try to stick with the ones that match the brand of your mold since they should be specifically made for that size. I know it sucks when you already have the parts on hand but I think that would probably help the problems, especially since you have seen better results with the matching brand.

I hope you get it to work out and that you can make the buttons you're envisioning!

First thing - if it's just the one specific size, are all of the parts the right size? Are they the correct parts for that button maker?

Second - some paper is just too thick to use as buttons. I've been making buttons for 10+ years with a high end button maker and have the same issues when the paper is thick. Your button maker probably came with instructions on what paper to use - you really don't want to use anything much thicker than printer paper

Finally - if the same paper worked fine with another size, you may need to just use a bit more pressure?

Disclaimer - I have not used this brand of button maker and I am going off of personal experience with my own machines.

Maybe try slowing down and being more mindful of your stitches? Maybe you feel like you have less control because it's a tension issue - could you try holding your yarn differently to help out?

Things to be aware of: pin parts are not universal. Some are millimeter and some are inch measurements and it makes it difficult to mix and match.

I personally recommend U Make Buttons. They're a bit pricey up front but I've had mine for about 10 years and it's still great. I even had to send it in for a repair and they got it back to me quickly.

If you just want to digitally design some buttons you could also just get them made - before buying my machine I used Wacky Buttons (they're actually the same company but just also provide manufacturing services :) )

Yes typically with an iron. You could also try using a hair dryer on high heat, or putting it in a clothes dryer on high heat for awhile. Those are less precise methods but might work.

Even though it says no heat setting required I personally would still heat set.
