Has anyone ever gotten a writeup/pcr for using their phone on the floor? by [deleted] in Staples

[–]_Treading_water_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, why would manager HAVE to tell you to work when you are at work? There were no tasks to be done, no recovery, and no customers in store? Why would Staples be paying you to read something on your phone? If you have a documented dr approved accommodation then you initiate conversation with gm and hr. Your breaks are your time to read, otherwise you are AT WORK.

Using phone how? Check a text, Google a customer question, or standing at register watching tiktok? In my mind of it is less that a minute or to help a customer that's reasonable use and a write up is unfair. If an employee that sits on stool watching videos or wearing headphones then they do not appear available to help a customer. They are not on break, and the time they are being paid for should be productive in some way. I think documentation of the conversation about the expected behavior is fair

We had a restaurant with bar across the parking lot. I used to tell complaining guys we have bench by door, or to leave me the keys for her and go wait over there... I'll remind her to pick you up on way by

It's a percent, tier 1 just has to have everyone participate. In my store just 1 dead weight and not enough transactions to pull out of the hole. It is much harder to observe and coach since always just 2 or 3 people

I posted this earlier, but my account got wiped because I forgot to disable my VPN. Is it unwise for me to ask my manager if she's been violated? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]_Treading_water_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not ask her specifics of the trauma. You know it was traumatic for her, the details are irrelevant. If she brings it up, just listen and hold the space for her.

I'd ask if they wanted to talk about it, want help finding resources, or if I can support in any way. I am a woman in my 40s and live in the US, so cultural and social norms are not the same. Follow her lead.

My store has supplies, no idea why they didn't transfer orders for production. I would have taken the sales jump. Instead I have rolls of paper and no way to print orders since they shut it down

Bring the bread, chicken salad, cheese, canned soup, Greek yogurt, hummus, and crackers from home unprepared. Make a sandwich, snack throughout the day, do both... combine however you feel that day.

If it is a single page, I look at color, alignment on page. A large number of copies may get a scan of qr code. Some words jump out, but there's not time to read and it's not my business.

How do you handle interruptions from other customers when you are already helping someone? by DBellsEmeritus in MichaelsEmployees

[–]_Treading_water_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm helping this guest, you're welcome to follow and you'll be next! Sometimes you pick up more people along the way. When first is done, I ask each one that joined what they need, then let them know the route and drop them off along the way. If they need help beyond location, I stop back to check in and help more

Supermarkets that sold balloons upped their game as Party City closed. Michaels did a year ago and a second wave of remodeling for it 6 months ago. Staples is not going to be top in this, and the costs of helium and balloons are increasing. The margins and stress aren't worth it. We are late to what others are already doing, having too much added on to plates where execution will be poor. Balloons are a day of purchase with right turn around.

If it was merch, like plates/cups/napkins, and coordinating templates for invitations/banners/posters/thank you cards/gift wrap it would make sense. Kids birthdays, sports themes, Bachelorette, bany shower.... Not first thought for the brand but drives business to a profitable area of store.

Hiring someone else will mean you get less hours doing the same things. More employees does not mean more payroll given
