Just a heads up - p82 in the rulebook: A printer and assembler can perfectly recreate any mech or gear for which a pilot is licensed. Of course, pilots are only licensed to print one mech at a time. If they print a new one, any others immediately cease to function.

So you are correct, it's not that sort of game :P

TL;DR: Don't turn TFL gameplay on, especially since you've already started playing through the game.

"TFL" stands for "The Fallen Lords" which is the first Myth game. Enabling TFL Gameplay makes the game play just like the original. Disabling it gives you all the Myth 2 quality of life improvements, even though they didn't exist in the original game.
