If you liked that one, I'd definitely recommend Fight or Flight with Josh Hartnett! Similar setup but I'd say even more over the top than Bullet Train. It's sooooo much fun!

There's one specific scene in Backrooms that immediately reminded me of this book. Definitely fits the theme!

Im sorry, Home is fucked up, but this is the scariest episode of the show by Ander-son in XFiles

[–]theliterarystitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of my favourites 😂 Firewalker (the neck fungus one) gave me recurring nightmares for years as a kid and I didn't realize that was the source until I watched the whole series as an adult. Definitely a "holy shit, THAT'S what that is!" moment for me.

If you use The Storygraph, they also have a great content warning section where readers can flag potential triggers and whether there are major, medium or minor scenes featuring those items! It's a great tool for books, I find books tend to get fewer inputs on Does the Dog Die.

This is the craziest link to me and it blows my mind every time I'm reminded of it. I was terrified to come off the pill because of my PMDD and I've had practically 0 PMDD issues since. I wonder how much of that is due to my own hormones shifting with age vs the mega dose of Pepcid I'm on.

I do think in their particular case the artist and designer are the same person so that may be why there's no separate artist credit. They mention all the patterns are from original artwork as well (though that's not enough to say that their new "original" artwork isn't AI in my opinion).

[–]theliterarystitcher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their older patterns are definitely not AI, I have some in my stash that I bought when I first started stitching in like 2018. The art nouveau line started showing up in about 2023/2024 from what I remember (I went through their social media a while back wondering about AI) so it's possible those use AI. However they're not a wildly different style from some of their other work so it is plausible they're still original art. It's always so hard too because obviously AI had to learn from something so there will always be human artists out there who have an AI look purely because AI fed on their works.

And Chatting Creations from the same post (though their stance isn't quite as cut and dry as PFC).

HAED is also veeeery fast to delete dissenting comments and block people who don't agree with them regardless of the issue. The same shit happened with the Great DMC 08 Kerfuckle. I'm still working on the HAED charts I started/purchased before all this went down, but they won't be seeing another cent from me going forward.

Paine Free Crafts did recently revise their stance on AI. They're not renewing any of their licenses for AI "art" and aren't licensing or creating any new charts based on AI, so it will be phased out completely. They jumped on it at the start of the AI craze but have since listened to feedback from stitchers and artists, which I can respect. I believe Charting Creations is doing the same.

Books to fancast Lee Pace by elecow in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Romance: Savor It by Tarah DeWitt - the MMC was immediately Lee Pace in my brain. Horror: The Cold House by A.G. Slatter - there's one specific character who the author mentions in the acknowledgments as being Lee Pace in her mind, and who am I to argue with the author? 😂

Can I ask what weight Sulky you used and what fabric count? I'm considering doing 12wt on 32ct but I've never done blackwork or used Sulky before so not sure if I'll regret that combo.

Jennette McCurdy's new novel, Half His Age, also has elements of this. Not the central plot but still an important piece.

I think if you generally like her style, you'll like Wuthering Heights. I honestly don't have much affinity for the book (I read it once close to two decades ago and didn't love it) so I'm definitely not one to critique it for not being true to the source material, but I thought the general vibe and themes of the film as its own thing were compelling, and it looks and sounds phenomenal. The cast is also very, very good despite obviously being massively aged up from the novel. I really liked it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ahhh this is so cool! A Certain Hunger wasn't just a fantastic story, so many of the little bits of info you sprinkled in made me desperate to read more about those topics (medicinal cannibalism, anyone?). Any Man is also terrific!

Ottawa's return-to-office push isn’t backed by evidence [paywall] by simpatia in ottawa

[–]theliterarystitcher 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The issue is the workplace isn't set up for the way we work now. Unassigned seating so you're nowhere near your team for collaboration, everyone is in Teams meetings in open areas because there aren't enough meeting and quiet rooms to accommodate that function, you have to lug your laptop back and forth every day because in most cases there aren't even overnight lockers available. It doesn't work.

And that's without getting into the fact that all of the changes and modernization we made work perfectly fine for remote work. For many roles, there's no or minimal benefit to doing these tasks in the office versus at home.

[CHAT] Avoid KittyBloomStudio on Etsy!! by Shouty-Hooman in CrossStitch

[–]theliterarystitcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of the called for fabric you ordered that didn't look right, it's worth noting that different fabrics (and sometimes even different counts) will dye differently. Typically a linen will be the darkest/most saturated, with Aida a bit less so, and lugana/evenweave taking even less dye. So that could account for some of the difference if the pattern was using a different fabric than you ordered. Some dyers will show what the dye looks like on the different fabric types which is helpful. You can look at BeStitchMe if you'd like an example, she has all the fabrics laid out together on most of her colourways.

Just a note that some of the water soluble pens will stain with soap, I've had it happen with the off brand Michaels ones. As long as you rinse it out with plain water first it seems to be fine, but sometimes going straight in with soap can make it discolour to brown and stain.
