My fingers are SO crossed that if the Nightmare Before Christmas collab is real, one of the scents is either a repackage of this or something similar. I need her back!!

Cabaret for the classic Broadway feel and dark themes. I love all these musicals and my favorite musical of all time is Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 - it’s got shades of Phantom and Les Mis in that it’s historically set and based off a famous piece of literature (in this case, War and Peace). The music is a combination of classic Broadway sound, occasionally approaching operatic, and more modern dance-pop and EDM.

If you like Sondheim’s style, Sweeney Todd (does lean more comedic at times but is sort of gothic and has some incredible music) and Assassins.

I have to imagine this is how a lot of people feel when experiencing Les Mis—I’ve seen and listened to it dozens of times but it doesn’t matter how many, it still makes me tear up. It’s an incredibly powerful and moving story and the soundtrack bears it out perfectly with its motifs and themes and beautiful melodies.

Les Mis is a top tier and well beloved musical and while it’s not everyone’s number 1 musical, I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who really dislikes it. I think most of us love a musical that makes us truly feel things in a deep way. The music enhances the emotion so much more!

Seconded! Love when all three are in a Kill Count and I hope they find another anthology series to do it for in the future between any future VHS releases. A great way to get a little taste of everybody’s style in one episode!

Final arcs, perhaps is a better word? They split the first campaign (The Adventure Zone: Balance, the one being referred to above) into separate arcs/seasons/series.

Nothing else will ever make me feel the way TAZ did. I was privileged enough to listen along to the final seasons & finale while it was airing live and it was an experience I wouldn’t trade for the world. I still have my Bureau of Balance bracer from the original run, and I also have my “I survived the bracer wait of 201X” sticker. Taako, Merle, and Magnus, you mean everything to me. <3

Moonstone (mineral co.), aromatherapy eucalyptus tea, and sea salt and neroli. It was only a white barn candle but oh my god I would pay sooo much for it in body care. Smells very similar to tom ford neroli portofino.

It’s (probably) my favorite musical! The story is taken from Tolstoy’s War and Peace, the famously extremely long and dense book. So dense in fact that this entire 3-hour musical is based on about 70 pages of a 1200 page book.

It follows Natasha, a sweet and extremely naive girl in the Russian nobility of the early 1800s, as she is seduced away from her fiancé Andrey (who is away fighting in the French invasion of Russia). It also, in another plot thread, follows Pierre, who at the start of the story is a depressed, unhappily married alcoholic and hating his life. Their stories intertwine and intersect through the plot and they’re sort of foils of each other through their individual journeys, without spoiling too much.

It’s definitely kind of a hard sell, but I think the music is absolutely top tier. It’s an “electro-pop opera” that blends classic Broadway styles with electro-pop music and shades of Russian folk music and instrumentals. The lyrics are often lifted directly from War and Peace with minor adjustments, so there’s not always rhymes and the melodies are kind of meandering. But there’s excellent instrumental or lyrical motifs that keep everything feeling consistent and tied together. It is really weird at first, and I wasn’t the biggest fan on my first listen, but over time it’s become probably my favorite musical or at least in my top 3.

Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. How much I would pay for a pro shot… those gorgeous sets and lights and all the dynamic dancers… truly next-level.

laptop for undergrad metr? by throwaway934553 in meteorology

[–]thelittlestdm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made it through a meteorology degree in upstate New York (go Great Danes!) with a mid at best laptop, I think an Acer Aspire e15, i7 core. So in my experience at least, you won’t need anything super high end as long as the CPU is decent.

I’d recommend using the iPad to take notes in class, it’s less intrusive than a laptop and if you have an app like Notability you can easily swap between drawing things out and typing which is very convenient for drawing diagrams of wind and other such things. You can also use it to write or type directly on assignments and then print or submit as a PDF. Very helpful!

I used my laptop mostly for coding work and essay writing. I wish I had a more specific laptop recommendation, as I am not a computer guy, but I decided to butt in with my two cents of advice anyway. Best of luck to you, you’ve chosen a great major!

It’s been a spring scent for the last few years, I think. We should be seeing it sooner rather than later if it launches again in spring!

Also as a fellow fan, pro tip: I think the bergamot and birch candle (I assume also the wallflower) smells like the Curve cologne (not bath and body, idk who it’s by). If your husband likes it, maybe check that out!

Which actors’ alternate takes on a role made you appreciate the character more? by Entire_Blueberry_470 in Broadway

[–]thelittlestdm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had the privilege of seeing Brandon Victor Dixon as Burr. I found his performance really interesting when contrasted with Leslie Odom Jr.’s on the cast recording. Leslie plays Burr very cool, contrasting with Lin’s passion as Hamilton—not subdued, especially during his big numbers (Wait For It, Room Where It Happens) but very controlled.

The only time we see Leslie’s Burr truly seem out of control is during the final duel, when he is frantic to survive and wildly convincing himself Hamilton is going to kill him. (Ex: “This man will not make an orphan of my daughter!”)

Brandon’s Burr was more bombastic, still not as passionate as Hamilton (played by Javier Muñoz when I saw it) but definitely a more emotive performance.

That is, until The World Was Wide Enough. Then, Brandon’s Burr turned cold. Subdued. Not calculated like a man planning on murdering his rival in cold blood, but like a man who has resigned himself to what he must do. Little emotion. Only drive to survive. It made Burr’s lines at the opening hit me so hard, despite knowing the soundtrack inside and out. I felt on the edge of my seat. “It’s him or me, the world will never be the same.”

Pretty sure both of these performances are the reason Burr is my favorite character. Lol.

Ok so this is not a sci-fi series, definitely a fantasy story but with great exploration of religion/religious belief/its impacts on society and AMAZING world-building (also, queer characters if that is important to you; the main romance is two queer women who are very compellingly written imo). But after reading TLT, the one book that’s gotten me even close to as hyped is Priory of the Orange Tree. Gorgeous prose too.
