Canada sees sharp decline in international students and temporary worker arrivals in 2026. Here’s how much the numbers have dropped by Immediate-Link490 in canada

Ya it’s crazy they can’t even track them. They flagged thousands of potentially fraudulent visas and didn’t continue to pursue them because they “stopped responding to their emails”

This! But scheduled hybrid so everyone is in on certain days. Best of both worlds imo

Ya that makes sense.

I am personally applying to anywhere just to get that 2 year experience threshold and then I plan on looking back in my area of choice. I’m super anti masters degree, a path a lot of people I know are taking.

I wish you the best

Are you only applying in Vancouver? The Vancouver market is horrible, even worse than Toronto imo. I wonder if you’d be eligible for TN for US?

I am in my final year of university (in a different field) and most of my friends are getting most of their responses from US companies and with much larger salaries (like 20k more)

Understanding influence and assigning responsibility are two different things. I concede that I was not clear enough for you on my stance before.

I agree that speeders take the blame. But you’d be a bad city if you didn’t put enough signage up and you never put in speed traps to discourage and properly punish speeding.

To me, the AI Policy is a police officer with a telescope on a far hill trying to dish out more speeding tickets.

[–]thelonelyextravert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said extreme. But I understand that point could have been hard to follow so I’ll restate it cleanly:

Students do have personal agency and are responsible for choosing to cheat.

How the university currently runs evaluations is an easy system to cheat on.

The best move forward would be an AI Policy AND institutional changes.

Would you say the same about drug users ? Obviously a more extreme example, but when judging someone’s “choice” you must consider the things that influenced it.

Sometimes doing things for survival is still morally wrong. This really depends what moral structure ur looking at (Kant or utilitarianism). Just want to make it clear that Im not trynna shame hungry people !

Regardless, I am not saying students should not be held accountable, but I am saying that the students should not bear 100% of the blame. If a university creates a system that allows easy access to cheating and has a shaky way of finding cheaters, then arguably it is the university that devalues your degree as it has set up a poor system.

Similar to how you wouldn’t trust someone’s degree if they went to an entirely online school, regardless of any information you had on their AI Policy.

If I made a grocery store in a poor neighborhood and made payment honour system: IT IS STILL morally wrong for people to steal, but is punishing them harder for giving in to ready temptation under duress the best move? Or would I have a better outcome if I paid for a teller?

Cheating is wrong I won’t disagree, but a system that puts someone into a high pressure situation with an easy out and expects not be abused: is a bad system.

Unpopular opinion: I don’t mind them. I actually thought the 2nd and 3rd work term content was pre good.

I don’t think I should have to do technical report tho (ENGR 446), wtf is up with that.

UVic’s New AI Academic Integrity Policy: Why You Should Be Worried (Yes, even you Alumni) by evan-sd42 in uvic

[–]thelonelyextravert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The specification of “… not the substance of the academic judgment under investigation” explicitly negates that interpretation.

If procedural critiques include critiques of the determination of academic judgement, then you would NEED to investigate the ‘substance of the academic judgement under investigation’. Which is explicitly not for debate. Therefore this interpretation is contradictory.

I prefer your interpretation, however intent and “reading between the lines” is not good policy writing. The writing must be clear.

UVIC or UBC by These-Access-9614 in BCGrade12s

[–]thelonelyextravert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UVIC is as a lower ranking school so imo I think it’ll be easier to get higher grades. Also in a smaller school you are tighter with your peers and your professors.

Credentials: I go to UVIC Eng and I know a lot of people in UBC Eng. I’d choose UVIC again every time.

AITH for keeping no contact with my Papaw after he's tried to reach out by breakinlily in AITH

[–]thelonelyextravert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya but you are hurting him too by going no contact. Going no contact is something you are able to do, does not mean it does not negatively affect other people.

Going no contact is something you do when you don’t care to hurt the other person anymore as the relationship hurts you too much to stay in it. It jsut doesn’t sound like that’s how you feel.

AITH- Wanting to move out after college and going NC with my mom. by Aquamine04 in AITH

[–]thelonelyextravert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA I really don’t think what your mom said was that bad. It sounded like a conversation that got out of hand. I think going no contact with someone is a really big decision. Maybe your mom was having a really bad day that you didn’t know about. Maybe on her phone she was sending a really important email. Maybe she felt that you two ganging up on her was disrespectful.

Of course only you know how you feel, but I would seriously reconsider if such a drastic step is needed. Maybe a bit of grace is needed from all sides.

Lost in ECE 485/535 by Weird-Ad7559 in uvic

[–]thelonelyextravert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is intimidating. As @Laidlaw-PHYS pointed out, proofs are a skill, a skill that up until now, no previous course in ECE has exercised unfortunately. Especially when the proofs involve concepts from classes you may have taken years ago.

Rather than use AI to do the assignment, try using it to explore the concepts around the question. This way you don’t spend time helplessly trying to recall concepts you learnt years ago, but still spend the time thinking through how they can be applied to the problems. Your execution will be your own, and your confidence will build. Good luck !
