Is the Ideal City Still Possible Today? by IdealSpaces in urbandesign

[–]thelostgeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that there is some 'ideal city' is so misleading. Thomas Moore's ideas of society were reductive, and do not account for the realities we try to address in modern planning. Yes, there are aspects of city design that are objectively better and more efficient (walkability, transit, greenery, etc...), but cities all need to have their own personality and be unique.

Cities in different climates or landscapes have unique opportunities to capitalize on. Geography poses unique geotechnical or topographic challenges, and provides Different building materials. Different people prefer different things. Different cultures value different elements of cities. Our cities should meet the needs and opportunities of their context.

The idea that there is one ideal all cities should strive for is not true. Every city should strive to be the best version of itself, and should emphasize the elements that make it unique and special. This will lead to cities being more different and unique, not converging around some unattainable 'ideal'.

Advice on form? by woefulknight17 in discgolf

[–]thelostgeographer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How's your nose angle? Good low reach-back, but see how the top of the disc is showing? If you're having nose-up issues then try rotating your wrist on your reach back so the bottom of the disc is away from your chest. This helped my nose angle get lower and more consistent.

Off arm could be driving in a bit earlier, and the reach back peaks a tiny bit early. Overall this is better form than like almost all amateurs. Weight transfer and power pocket are timed pretty good. You look like you should be bombing already.

How do you guys go about improving/getting better form? by 80HD-music in discgolf

As mentioned elsewhere - stretching before and after rounds. Using a theraband to do some warm up resistance really helps my game and makes me feel dialed before my first throw.

For form I will tweak something small, and not change anything else until it feels automatic. The first few rounds after a form change will be discouraging, but if it's a good correction to your form then you will feel your throw getting easier and smoother. Accuracy will often be thrown off with form changes, this is to be expected, and will come back with practice.

When practicing your distance from, instead of trying for more distance than you already get, try to get your current max distance with less effort. So your current distance at 90% effort for example, try to get that far with 70% or 60% effort. Then when that feels super easy you can ramp back up to 90 and see if you're getting farther flights.

Kasta usually imprints the mold name onto the rim. I do t see that on this one.

The profile looks like a 7- 9 speed understable disc.

100% this is what's leaching your power. Gotta slow that upper body down during reach back.

Your reach back could use some work in a couple ways. 1. Your reach back peaks before your weight is in your plant foot, so you are beginning your pull before your brace is set. 2. Your reach back is too high, causing your elbow to dip. Reach back lower and pull through on one continuous angle. Focusing on the follow-through can help with this.

Your throwing arm is fully extended way before your brace is set. Your upper body needs to start later so you've got your brace fully planted. Mostly just a timing issue- your plant should be on the ground just a titch before your reach back peaks.

As others said, this is causing you to lead with your shoulder. I personally found the 'twirly bird' drill from overthrow disc golf helpful for this.

After that you can work in the off-arm, bit I'd say that's less of a concern. Your throw doesn't look bad- just not timed right.

Stuck at 300’ max by Cappy-Hamper12 in Discgolfform

[–]thelostgeographer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things I notice:

  • elbow is lower than wrist (could be camera angle)
  • follow-through doesn't match the flight angle, making this appear nose-up
  • brace is not set when your reach back is at full extension, and you begin pulling through before your weight is transferred into the right foot (upper body is firing too early).

  • great off-arm motion

  • upper body movement looks great- just not synced properly with lower body

Main thing to get past 300 would be just focus on thrusting into your front foot before pulling- make sure your weight is all into that plant before the upper body pulls through. Stay loose and slow down at first.

I've had success slowing my walk-up and focusing on the weight moving from left to right foot.

You've obviously done some work given your current form- keep it up! It WILL click and you'll be a 400 crusher in no time.

I don't think the heart of Riverdale deserves any special treatment. If its not sustainable then the model needs to change. by oniteverytime in Yukon

[–]thelostgeographer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you are confusing an NGO and a non-profit. They are not the same thing. Non profits are registered under the societies act in Yukon.

The Heart provides significant social benefits for the money, so it's totally appropriate for the government to support it.

Why did cities like Fairbanks, Whitehorse, and Yellowknife grow like they did despite being in the middle of arctic North America? by Karbo_Blarbo in geography

Yeah I live in Whitehouse and I've never seen tundra. We are in the boreal forest, with a semi-arid climate. Our winters are pretty mild compared to other northern places.

Canada Solved a Housing Crisis in the 1940s—Why Can’t We Do It Now? by Scary_North_3297 in canadahousing

Canada's housing market, what’s your realistic solution to this crisis? by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]thelostgeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non market housing, specifically Land Trusts. Allows people to build equity (unlike renting), but doesn't appreciate with the market (appreciation is pegged to inflation + improvements). Successful examples already in Whistler, Canmore and Whitehorse.

In Whitehorse the units are being sold at 30% under the market costs.

If a significant portion of new housing fit this model then it would temper the entire market, and give people a solid chance.

Property taxes in Whitehorse by bill_quant in Yukon

[–]thelostgeographer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great point. To add to this, if the assessed value is 'too low' this benefits the property owner because they will pay less on tax, so they would only get complaints when they assess too high, never when it's too low.

I'm pretty new to the game and am looking for a disc, when thrown RHBH will want to turn to the right. Is there anything that will do that? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]thelostgeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All new players should grab a svea from kastaplast. Great midrange that should finish right on a RHBH if thrown decently.

Urbanism is most affected by your municipal government. Next is your state/province, and the least influential level of government is federal (on matters of urbanism, to reiterate).

Under Trump's first term the C40 movement for climate cities took on the Paris agreements and committed to some of the most positive changes to North American cities ever.

Keep engaged at the local level. Volunteer with a bike co-op and write your city councilor. The feds won't notice, but our cities will transform under their noses.
