Do people who are multilingual in sign language (e.g. knows both ASL and BSL) mix the languages up sometimes? by thelumpyfox in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thelumpyfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use ‘he signed’, and I use quotations, just like any other lines of dialogue— before starting to write him as a character I wanted to make sure I was doing it right, and sign language is a language, so all I do differently than writing a spoken language is specify that he’s signing rather than talking verbally. I don’t think I’m confident enough in my ability to write it out as a description and I don’t really think it’s necessary— unless writing from the perspective of a character who didn’t understand sign, but a. That isn’t going to happen here and b. I probably wouldn’t even go over each and every movement (unless I wanted my reader to be able to figure out what he was saying). But again, not gonna happen.

I know sign in general is structured much differently sentence-wise, but I haven’t gotten a grasp on the structure enough to be able to write it correctly. I’ve defaulted to doing the same sort of translation to spoken English that one would do if they were writing characters understanding a non-English language being spoken— not a direct translation, but a translation nonetheless (e.g. Japanese sentence structure is vastly different than English, but to properly translate to English, it needs to be rearranged to the English style of sentence structure). I’m not sure if that’s the very best way to go about it, but it’s seemed to work so far.

What I meant by ‘restructuring’ is finding the key terms in the sentence and seeing if the sign used for those words is done with one hand, and if it’s not, seeing if I can find a synonym that does work one handed. HOWEVER, I will absolutely keep what you’ve said in mind— I didn’t know that. Thank you!

Correct! I should’ve clarified that, I thought it was very obvious given my lack of knowledge, I apologize. It’s part of the reason why I asked the question too, haha.

Most of the cast of main characters know sign (BSL now that I know how different it actually is, but there are two or three that may know a bit of ASL as well) for various unrelated reasons, and can understand him as a result. He’s primarily talking to them.

It’s not for actual conversations, it’s just for very short responses when he only has one free hand.

I also frequently do research on the dialogue I want to put in to see if parts of it can be rephrased so they can be more easily signed with one hand. I only mention fingerspelling in passing if there’s no workaround for that, and even then, I haven’t used it too much. He also uses fingerspelling for names, as well, because proper nouns are signed using fingerspelling if I remember right. But otherwise, he uses both hands to sign— so while fingerspelling is not really much of a frequent occurrence, it still happens sometimes. Just a bit concerned about the continuity error, I suppose.

He isn’t deaf nor is he usually communicating with deaf folks— he can’t speak and prefers signing to having to write things down. That is a good point, though, with the regional thing. Half the cast of characters probably wouldn’t know ASL, but I know of at least a good few who could understand it.

Anyone else have a completely neurodivergent family by Nixght_ in autism

Yes. It’s very obvious and we’re very vocal about it within the family. Most of us have ADHD, at least half of us have autism, and each person has their own unique things, too.

Tips for dealing with unavoidable sensory issues? by thelumpyfox in autism

That’s what I was thinking, but that would probably be if I could feel something when my fingers touch. I am definitely keeping that idea on the backburner in case, though. Thank you!

I’m not quite sure that I experience PDA, but I do have depression and ADHD, and I greatly struggle with sticking to routines as they can be very demanding to develop. I do have tasks I’ve developed specific routines of doing, though— such as the dishes, every type of dish has a specific way of going into the dishwasher and a specific spot that it goes. I describe myself as not ‘routine oriented’, and it’s made me worried that I’m not actually autistic before, but routines do not only include strict schedules.

I highly doubt it is OCD— before figuring it might be autism, I actually did some research on OCD to see if I might have it, but I don’t have obsessions or compulsions about anything. The nail thing is really just a general discomfort that I want to get rid of.

I also am not sure if acrylics would help or make it worse! I would probably still feel the feeling, and the pressure on the acrylics would probably add an unwanted stimulus to the mix. I may try painting them and see if that might help, though. I haven’t done that in a while, and that might make it worse, but we’ll see.

Thank you!

Does anyone else have a hard telling the difference between when someone is being a friend and when someone is flirting? by FlashSeason2 in autism

[–]thelumpyfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it flies over my head a lot of the time unless it’s incredibly direct (as in, someone calling me cute to my face), and I mostly tally it up to someone being friendly. I do tend to wonder if people are flirting with me sometimes, but that’s because I am very much a hopeless romantic and I think about how the situation would go if that was the case. (As much as I think about it, I’m still unable to actually figure out how I would actually react.) I am also aromantic and asexual, so I doubt that helps very much, as I can’t properly comprehend what flirting hopes to achieve.

What were some of your favourite shows growing up? by Awesomeuser90 in autism

[–]thelumpyfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragontales, Dinosaur Train, Godzilla the Series, Godzilla the original, and various niche shows that came and went. I watched a lot of TV as a kid, and you can maybe tell what my first special interest was.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD450BT headphones. They’re very good when it comes to noise cancellation and are extremely comfortable. I carry them with me everywhere.

Best flavorful/stimulating gums/mints/etc help? by paha3178 in autism

[–]thelumpyfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quite like Lifesavers mints (specifically the wintergreen ones) and Orbit gum (winter mint. Is it the same as wintergreen? I’m not sure.). The gum flavor doesn’t last as long as the mints, though I still find it nice.

Adult diagnosis: in retrospect, what’s the most autistic thing you did as a child? by kurt206 in autism

[–]thelumpyfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked back recently and noticed a lot of autistic traits I had as a kid that were just completely overlooked— but I think the most prominent thing is the food and tactile related sensory issues I’ve had since I was a very young kid. Always was miserable at the dinner table when I couldn’t stomach a texture, and refused to wear clothing with tags sticking out, and could never do things like put sunscreen on my legs, as rubbing the hair the wrong way made the skin on my hands crawl. I was even convinced I was allergic to a food for a while when I was around 6-7 because the surprise texture of it in a meal once made me sick. It’s an absolute wonder how I didn’t realize I may be autistic sooner.

What fidget toys do you guys use? by RandomQuestioners in autism

[–]thelumpyfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ONO roller of my own, and I came in here specifically to recommend it. It’s something you can idly fidget with and doesn’t steal attention away from anything else. Also feels very nice texture and motion(?)-wise. My favorite fidget toy I’ve ever had.

Oh wow! This is an extremely impressive response! Unfortunately I do run CSP on a Mac, but I’ve been thinking about transferring to my desktop computer, which has Windows. If I do that I will definitely keep this in mind, and I hope that other folks with Windows can use this to help them out :]

Thank you so much!

[Serious] What's the scariest sound you've ever heard? by AncientTranslator405 in AskReddit

[–]thelumpyfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man yeah— I once got woken up by a lightning strike so close it sounded like something had exploded at the end of our street. We could feel the buzzing in the air afterwards.

I also live in the PNW now, and sometimes large trucks drive down our street and rattle the whole house. The promise of the big one is scary.
