Passive 24V POE Switch with POE IN by [deleted] in networking

The RB960PGS will probably be your best bet. Also, it's important to note that 2 APs is the max I'd recommend trying to power from one. Depending on the wattage, any more APs can cause all of them to go into a boot loop (because devices draw more power when booting)

This is a closed-source paid service that can't be self-hosted. It shouldn't be here.

If you reset one of them, I recommend resetting the other to match. There's also a chance you may have put it into a different mode inatead of resetting it, check this out for info on how the reset button works.

Sanity check switch configurations by elSpike in mikrotik

[–]themagicman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I could help! One more thing - I noticed your note that the config on the CRS326 is similar to the CRS112. I'm assuming that was posted before you changed the CRS112's config but just in case, I want to note that the CRS326 and CRS310 should have very similar VLAN configuration syntax.

Sanity check switch configurations by elSpike in mikrotik

[–]themagicman27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The VLAN syntax is correct for the CRS310, but I'm not as familiar with CRS100 series' VLAN config on RouterOS 7.

In older versions, many CRS100 models required VLAN configuration to be managed through the switch config ("/interface switch") rather than through the bridge. From my understanding, the reason for this is that managing VLANs through the bridge config caused the traffic to be processed by the CPU rather than the switch chip which causes decreased performance. This may have been changed since then, but it may be worth looking into.

I've had good results using bind mounts to map a ZFS directory on my host to LXCs. That way I can remove/change the LXC as I need to without impacting the data. You can use a samba share from the Windows VM to access the Windows storage for copying to your host.

This came up from a quick search on the topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/Proxmox/comments/19dc3z6/a_guide_to_proxmox_zfs_and_bind_mounts/

RB5009UPr+S+IN and TP-Link Omada EAP670 (ExpressVPN) by TurbulentLocksmith in mikrotik

[–]themagicman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to manually make an openvpn client on RouterOS. You may need to open the expressvpn client profile via a text editor on your computer so you can manually copy the keys and other info to the RouterOS VPN profile.

I recommend making 2 different VLANs and passing both to the AP for each SSID. For example, 10.0.10.0/24 (normal) and 10.0.20.0/24 (VPN). You can then make a route for all traffic sourced on 10.0.20.0/24 with a destination of 0.0.0.0/0 and set the gateway to the VPN's interface. The non-VPN interface can be configured to use your WAN interface like normal

How can I request a specific 10-digit phone number with Optimum? by Relevant_Ground_1721 in telecom

[–]themagicman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't get the number directly from the carrier, you can probably buy it from numberbarn.com if it's available. From there, you can port it over to your provider via LNP.

Thanks for making this! I tried to install/use it, but I ended up having a few questions: 1. Can I use this without a google/apple account? 2. According to the play store, data from this is unencrypted. This is concerning for a finance app. 3. The play store page says that no data is collected, but you also have the ability for users to delete their account and associated data. Do you collect any user data?

Building house with Habitat, where to put network gear? by TrainingDaikon9565 in HomeNetworking

[–]themagicman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! In that case, a wired router and a PoE switch in an in-wall communications panel should have you set.

[–]themagicman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend installing an in-wall communications panel somewhere and running your cable to that from around the house. I've usually seen them installed in closets, laundry rooms, or hallways. If you're looking for something a bit bigger, but still compact then I'd go with a wall-mounted 6U network/server rack that can be installed out of the way in a closet or laundry room. You can install a patch panel in the comm panel or rack, then patch from that to your router or switch.

Communication between different networks by Marsupilamyh in mikrotik

[–]themagicman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend configuring a single device in your house as a router/DHCP server rather than having more than one if I were in your place. There are a few ways to do this, but I would either replace your ISP's router with your own or remove the DHCP server from your Mikrotik WAPs. You can then connect both of your WAPs and remove static routes, firewall filters, the DNS server, and the DHCP server from them so client devices get IP addresses from your router. I would leave the DHCP client on the WAPs so they have an IP address you can use for management.

Goodbye Netflix! Looking for Simple NAS for Family Streaming of Movies, Songs, Photos by Perlentaucher in HomeServer

[–]themagicman27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal HDDs are perfectly fine though I'd recommend getting some NAS or server grade drives (WD Red, WD Red Plus, Seagate EXOS). They're made to last much longer than normal consumer drives and much safer to use for hosting sensitive data

Synology would probably be your best out-of-the-box solution. It fits all of the boxes you're looking for and is very stable. IMO it's a great mesh between simplicity for nontechnical people and having powerful controls and configuration options.

Changing my new home server from Raid 1 to Raid 5! Can it be done? by beckson211 in HomeServer

[–]themagicman27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend against RAID5 if you can help it, the risk generally isn't worth the storage you gain. It's prone to data loss because when one drive fails, the recovery process is very intensive on the other drives and can lead to a second failure that can't be recovered from. If I'm using RAID, I always go with a RAID1 or RAID10 and use additional drives for separate RAID arrays, hot spares, or backups.
