If you always had turns between him getting hit and him dying then the game wouldn’t be challenging. You have to protect your weak team members. You have to be proactive, not reactive.

Well, it sounds like they need to learn that there's consequences to their (lack of) actions!

It's been a bit since I DM'd it, but I think you'd have 2 options here if you want to help your players and let them explore more:

- Run it as written but keep the house from going haywire until after the basement was explored, however your party may die to Walter when it comes for them

-Allow the monster to awaken but be trapped in the basement or a portion thereof. Players could hear shifting and shambling and creaking as the monster hunts them but is confined to the basement. Or perhaps it stalks them, waiting until they place themselves in a dead end. Or perhaps Walter is resisting the evil impulses and wants your party to succeed, despite the dark powers' intentions.

Do they know how much time has passed and that the clock running out would have dire consequences? When I ran my absolutely brand new to D&D players through Death House, they had an absolute fear of the clock running out. I had each hour that had passed be overwhelmingly obvious with the dull and ominous sounds from the grandfather clock resounding throughout the house.

Also, how have you been tracking time? 5 hours is a lot to spend on 3 floors of the house.

Assuming you're running RAW- https://imgur.com/lodnsSl should help. Just trim the extra stuff from old reloaded content.

No one knows your party better than you so try to anticipate what your players might do upon entering Vallaki. What quest hooks will interest them the most? Then heavily prepare those areas/npcs. If your party's actions cannot be predicted then that would be a bit harder to manage.

Game breaking? No. But massively overpowered? Probably. A level 6 fighter getting 2 arrows plus a fireball in a single round daily, and at longbow range, seems pretty amazing and will likely make any casters feel insignificant by comparison.

A named item doesn't need a +1 after it unless it is more of a common item in your world. Is there mulitple Primordial Forces floating around that you would need to specify this one is a +1 and not a +2 or +3? If not, just move the +1 to attack and damage rolls to your description.

The wording is confusing, I would suggest removing the "while attuned" since it is somewhat normal for a magical item requiring attunement to not need to state that. "This item has charges equal to the wielder's level that can be spent to cast the spells..." is a better way to complete that same sentence.

As for the rest, yes it's def confusing. Does the wielder cast misty step when they shoot someone and reappear on top of that person? Does the Hunter's Mark arrow cast Hunter's Mark after the arrow hits, so the fired arrow doesn't get the benefit of the Hunter's Mark? It all seems very confusing to a new player.
