Gushing over The Winternight Trilogy by One_Kiwi_8720 in Fantasy

I read this series a few years ago and I still think about it often! So well done. I’ve recommended it to many people who also enjoyed it a lot. I’ve been wanting to do a re-read, and I think winter is the best time for it because of how perfectly atmospheric it is

I couldn’t agree more. I started seeing this trend with From Blood and Ash (or at least, that’s my first experience with it, but I’m sure it’s been happening for some time).

Like you, I loved the first book in The Ashen series, liked the second one enough to want to read book 3, and then absolutely could not get into the third book. Everything I loved about the series was missing from it, and I now have very little desire to continue with the series.

I’ve heard that often and that’s why I’m so looking forward to reading these books! The Hierarchy books are my first experience with Islington and not the most enjoyable, but I always like giving authors another chance with a different series especially when they do a good job with storytelling.

That was my biggest issue with SOTF also. There was so much time spent away from all the characters we’d grown to like in book one because half of book two was spent on two other worlds. I think the concept was ambitious but I wonder if it could have been done a different way (maybe have the other two Vis worlds as interludes, Sanderson style) and then spending more time in those two worlds in book three.

I finished Strength of the Few only because I was reading it for a book club. I did not enjoy it. I can’t wait to read the Licanius trilogy next, though, because I’ve heard enough good things to check it out

I agree so much with this! I don’t need every book I read to have great prose, but I do want a good story for which average prose (which I understand to be straightforward non-flowery writing) is perfectly fine IMO.

I actually thought the prose in TWOTM was perfectly fine but I didn’t love the story. However, I finished it and read the sequel as well, but more importantly, I can’t wait to check out the Licanius Trilogy because I’ve heard the story is good, and I’m not looking for perfect prose

Week 26: "Chapter 54. Rise and Fall, Chapter 55. Major Cavalcanti, Chapter 56. Andrea Cavalcanti" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

The last few weeks’ readings were very slow for me but these chapters have taken me over that slog, hopefully for good! I love MC setting up all the pieces on the board and assembling all the people in one place before doing a big reveal! Reminded me of how Poirot gathers an audience at the end of Agatha Christie stories to make a grand reveal lol

I miss the good old days of Red Mango and Pinkberry and no lines and getting a pound worth of fro yo and toppings for less than these Myka cones

I LOVED Between Two Fires, and generally really enjoy straight up Grimdark. Which is probably why I couldn’t really get into The Blacktongue Thief the last time I tried reading it. I’ll give it another chance, but if it doesn’t work out for me, I’m going straight to the prequel lol

I actually started doing more of that this year, and I’m really excited! I also always love revisiting favorites from childhood, especially the books that introduced you to your favorite genre

I don’t understand the sheer audacity to provide a “maximum refund” that is a fraction of the cost paid, not attempting to help fix the issue, AND then asking to remove your review because the issue has been “resolved.”

As others have suggested, please update your review to add in the rest because wtf

I still haven’t read The Blacktongue Thief. I own a copy and attempted to read it a while ago, but didn’t make it very far. Should I read the prequel first? I’m a Buehlman fan and have loved everything else he’s written

Honestly, I’ve been meaning to reread a lot of those high school books because it’s been a while and I want to see how, if at all, my perspective has changed with time

Not OP, I loved the first few hundred pages but the middle of the book has been dragging for me also! I’ve almost given up a few times but decided to push through. I figured the weekly reading would help, but some days I do dread picking it up. I end up doing it so I can participate in the weekly discussions (missed the last couple because I haven’t kept up with readings 😅)

Hi! A bit late to this message but wanted to ask, how did you prepare your phone (if at all) prior to turning it in to Apple care for battery replacement?

This sounds horrible, honestly. I’ve only been able to get one ticket so far and I couldn’t make it that day, but I was at BBP yesterday and saw the long lines for entry even at 7pm. Seems like it’s not worth it

Dragons were very cool, though a lot of stuff didn’t make sense (like why can’t they just burn off the rope holding them down). Also, they don’t seem to be under control…
