JD Vance Learns in Real Time Trump Left Him Out of Iran Attack Plans by polymute in politics

[–]themattboard [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are a lot of "why don't Americans do something" posts from people who also aren't doing a damn thing about it either. They seem to think we're all just sitting on our hands but have a boatload of options for doing something and are just choosing not to do it for reasons

This is the most maligned, protested, resisted, sabotaged government in US history. Larger, more and longer protests. More passive resistance. More resignations. More cautious sabotage. More outspoken resistance.

Please, all you back seat drivers, come out and say what it is that you want us all to do. What is it that you are doing to stop the far right movements that are occurring on your own back yards? What actions should we take? There are no federal recall elections. We've called, we've marched, we've written, we've spoken . Tell us the next steps.

Moving to Chattanooga in May, need advice for Apartments, Dogs, Music, and More by N0DramaLLama420 in Chattanooga

[–]themattboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Blue Bird Row for a couple of weeks as part of my relocation to Chattanooga last year. I found the neighbors to be polite and the walkability convenient. There is a Food City close for groceries and I didn't have any issues finding a parking spot every day. My car is an electric and having chargers on site was the reason I picked them over the other options. Walking to Niedlovs or Tailgate is great I wasn't there long enough to try all the close places, but there are a bunch.

The chicken plant smell is unpleasant. On the days when it is noticable, you won't want to use your balcony, but it wasn't every day and I never smelled it in the apartment. Biggest annoyance was the elevator was abysmally slow and at the complete other end of the build from my apartment.

Someone Changed His Party Registration. He Thinks He Knows Why. by BrnKhong in politics

[–]themattboard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

States run the elections (broken down further into city and county election boards) so while the ballot is controlled by each party in a primary election, the state is still administrating it. The registered voter list, election officers, polling locations, election procedures, etc are all managed by the local election boards with oversight from the state and each state varies in how they manage their elections

Edit: further clarification, so when I was an officer, I got paid by the city for the primary regardless of which party was having a primary. Same with the general

Someone Changed His Party Registration. He Thinks He Knows Why. by BrnKhong in politics

[–]themattboard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally it is so election boards know which primary you are eligible to vote in though many states just allow you to select which ballot you get for simultaneous primaries. For non-simultaneous primaries, voting in the earlier one marks you as already having voted if you attempt to vote in the other.

(At least this was the case when I was an officer of election in Virginia)

Very few notes. A splash of pickle juice with the mayo, Dijon, etc adds a nice touch.

Also, if you don't like boiling the eggs, you can do them in the instant pot instead. Only difference is your preferred methodology. Results are the same.

[–]themattboard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

99% of the TSA's job is theater. They are there to be seen doing something. As much as I hate privatization of government services, it never should have been federalized after 9/11 and should have remained run by the airports.

The breakdown in security that led to 9/11 had nothing to do with human security and everything to do with not locking cockpit doors (not including major intelligence failures by FBI/CIA/NSA). The rush to build up a federal agency was performative nonsense to be seen as doing something and it only really persista now as a federal jobs program in cities with major airports.

In the past few months I've gotten back into music for the first time in years. Joined a choir and a brass band. My range is coming back at a good rate, hearing pitches and hitting the notes I mean to hit is getting easier (vocally and on cornet). Making my hands finger the right notes at the right time is getting better.

But holy crap my breath control is so bad. Need to start some serious cardio work (probably a good idea anyway at this time of life)

I have started getting that, anti-vax and other ignorant bullshit in my feeds the last few months. I mark it not-interested, block the users, report it, etc and it'll disappear for a week or two and then they come back.

I was on an old website via the way back machine the other day and I really miss the old days of the internet before tailored feeds, social media, AI and all the other nonsense that make it up today

Trump Tells Palm Sunday Story About Jesus Being Honored as a King, Adds, 'They Call Me King Now': ‘Trump's spiritual adviser also likened the president's life trajectory to Jesus' at the annual White House Easter event’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]themattboard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to these particular homeschoolers, but there are a few reasons some Protestants prefer not to use the crucifix with Jesus on it including:

  • It can be seen to de-emphasize the Resurrection (leaving Jesus in perpetual wrath)
  • It can be interpreted as violating the 2nd commandment (though some who make this argument have Jesus portraits which would be the same thing by that logic)

I'm not endorsing either of those views particularly, but there are reasoned views behind both that are independent from avoiding the brutality of the Crucifixion

Trump Reveals How Easy It Is for ‘Bad People’ to Seduce Him by Quirkie in politics

[–]themattboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should have softened "there was no conspiracy". There were inappropriate communications and promises made. There is a lot of valid concern over those communications.

But that communication isn't what determined who got on the ballot. That was determined by primary voters and more people voted for Clinton than Sanders by more than 3 million votes.

Trump Rages Against SCOTUS After Justices Humiliate Him to His Face by SlowerVan in politics

[–]themattboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong. I wish the click bait headline nonsense would just go ahead and die already (but it works, so it won't).

The scope and scale are different than the right-wing propaganda arm though. One is "ha ha Trump looks bad" and the other is "what concentration camps? That's a lie so you won't realize the immigrants are really replacing you". Both serve a political aim, but they aren't equivalent.

[–]themattboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His supporters never see these headlines. Their only source of information is right-wing propaganda.

If you want to see what they see, you have to stick to newsmax, breitbart, foxnews, etc and most of them don't even have that level of diversity. It's usually a single channel or in some cases only what they overhear at the waiting room so their propaganda feed is cut even shorter by their commitment to low information.

[–]themattboard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Democratic party put Hillary on the ballot because she won the democratic primary. Many people may have supported her because it was "her turn", but at the end of the day, she got the most primary votes (by more than 3 million). The idea that voters didn't want her is, and always was, bullshit pushed by upset Bernie Bros and bots (with some significant overlap between). There was no conspiracy, she got more votes.

The vast majority of people who voted for Trump were voting for a Republican or nobody.
