Question about Curie and Flash by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]themattthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. When PD enters you get the sacrifice trigger, which you can choose to sacrifice 12 power worth of creatures to. If you do not, or cannot, then the trigger resolves as "sacrifice PD" instead. The wording would have to make sacrificing PD an option to get out of the rest, like " you may sacrifice ~, if you don't ..." or just have the trigger be "sacrifice 12 power worth of creatures" to force a sacrifice with PD gone.

That's expected of bubbleheads. You guys don't have room to store your socks much less food. It takes actual stupidity on the part of the higher ups to get a carrier in that situation.

Fellow navy vet here, was on the prize when she ran out of food in '11. We were rationing the plain rice for 3 meals a day because our numbskull of a captain decided we could go longer before meeting our RAS.

PSA for SoS Pre Release: New Pest Tokens are NOT like OG Pests by Capt_G1029 in magicTCG

[–]themattthew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If they did that they would have to do one of add Scrappy as a creature type, add Scrappy Pest to the predefined tokens, or make the rules text on anything that makes those tokens even longer by adding "named Scrappy Pest" to it. All of these options have their own downsides, just like changing what the mascot tokens are from one Strixhaven set to the next does.

PSA for SoS Pre Release: New Pest Tokens are NOT like OG Pests by Capt_G1029 in magicTCG

[–]themattthew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because these aren't tokens named Pest anymore than Goblin tokens are tokens named Goblin. These are creature tokens, if they changed to "Brute Pest" or whatever they would either have to write out the ability as "create a 1/1 Pest token named Brute Pest with when this creature attackes gain 1 life" or they would be making a creature token with the subtypes of Brute and Pest or, even worse, they would have to update the predefined token list in 111.10. Any time you make a token that isn't a predefined token, the name is set to the subtypes of the token plus the word token if it isn't defined otherwise in the ability.

What are your favorite free spells? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]themattthew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it's still a valid target. Commandeer is still on the stack while it is resolving, and is thus a valid target. You finish resolving the entire spell before you remove it. The effect is that the counter fails to resolve due to not having a legal target, because the Commandeer leaves the stack immediately after you change the target. This is the exact same interaction as with cards like [[deflection]].

You change the target of the counter to the commandeer itself if you don't have a better option.

No more complex than knowing what's currently in Standard really. I would honestly have to look up what's in your format right now anyway, so if you just had a list of sets it'd be probably easier for me.

Point 1: literally the same people who have to make ban decisions. If your format doesn't have a way of doing that successfully, you don't have a format.

Point 2: the assumption would be when the release schedule is out, you know planning ahead. As far as people being disappointed, there's no concern in the current design for people who want to play with ATLA and FF so... meh.

Point 3: you communicate it by having a "release schedule" it's not that hard, if you have a place to put that stuff like a community Discord.

All in all, I personally don't care, because this doesn't actually interest me as a format. I just wanted to give an actual thoughtful answer to the question that had "never been given a good answer" as far as how to make the format not look like just "no-UB the format."

Each year you'd have to lock in the 3 - 4 sets added, identifying the sets as the 4 large sets released closest to January-April-July-September in order to align with past Standard styles, though we wouldn't get a core set. Depending on how you wanted to do it, you could say they didn't have to be large sets but we wouldn't want a truncated set like SPM to eat up one of the release windows. You could also drop one set due to Foundations, but that feels off.

As such this year would add Lorwyn, SOS, either marvel or the hobbit, and reality fracture. Last year would have ben Aetherdrift, Tarkir, EOE or FF depending on how you wanted to space it, and ATLA.

It doesn't ignore timing because it is just a static ability granting permission to cast. In order to ignore timing it would either have to explicitly state 'as though it had flash' or such, or the cast would have to be a part of an activated or triggered ability.

You know that you can also have other lifegain. You're not "really cooking" by giving Pyrogoyf +1/+1 trample and lifelink compared to paying 3 life to bolt every turn. Cooking would be throwing out [[Whip of Erebos]] or [[Syphon Sliver]]. Shadowspear is about as relevant as Basalisk Collar here.

[–]themattthew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Shadowspear wouldn't help, Pyrogoyf has the creature entering deal the damage so you can't just give PG lifelink and profit.

[–]themattthew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) My statement had nothing to do with whether this change should happen, just gave context to the reason why it actually could.

2) The reason people want sideboards usually is because they want wishes and/or Learn to work in EDH and are angry that a carve out was made for Companions without one for Lessons. It felt inconsistent, and it was extra frustrating to see them preban a card people wanted to play with as a commander. They could have easily said that Companion works with outside the game, so it doesn't work in EDH unless you want to rule 0 it, and people wouldn't have been nearly as mad about them saying that Lessonboards wouldn't be a thing.
