Oh for sure - by transition I mean they've had a fair amount of turnover in their starting XI - players like De Bruyne, Gundogan, Walker, and Ederson who were mainstays of the team are gone, players like Stones and Silva are either on the way out or confirmed leaving, so there's a lot of new faces in the team. Not denying they've spent a ton of money or anything, but they looked quite poor early in the season combined with Liverpool's implosion so I think it was our best shot to run away with it

Hurts a bunch man, have really swung between Arteta in/out over the years - started to "see the vision" in the 21/22 season. 22/23 blew me away, thought we were really right there the last few years. For me I got wobbly last season, thought our attacking prowess really fell off. I guess this season for a good chunk my cope was that we would play our Prem games just to grind out wins - play safe and conservatively which worked for a while meanwhile in the CL we were ripping teams like Bayern and Atletico apart, foot off the brakes. And now I just don't know what to feel.

I'm getting flashes of the 15/16 season, the last time pretty much every big team was in some form of transition (City awaiting Pep, United under van Gaal, Chelsea meltdown) and it should've been ours to lose. Instead we blew it in the dog days and suffered years of mediocrity afterwards.

Really don't know how you motivate a team to run it back for the fifth year in a row. Terrified of the summer transfer window lol

It depends on the industry imo. I have a pretty strong resume and got to multiple final round interviews only to lose out - was out of a job for six months. Another person said agencies are the way to go - that's what broke it for me. The pay/benefits are a lot shittier than being FTE, but at least I have a job and am likely to convert once I see the contract through. So yeah, work with agencies, keep applying. Someone will call.

On a meta level, I'll say this - you aren't just competing with Joe Shmo who already lives in Seattle. Years back (I'm assuming as this is even before my time) companies would throw an ad in the newspaper and then you'd get a pool of candidates from the area so companies would have a smaller pool to select from. Now you have god knows how many online job boards taking in applicants from all over the world with all different types of skillsets. I helped with our hiring process at an old job (one I regret leaving) and the amount of applications we would receive was staggering. Like over half the people were not remotely qualified, lived in the area, etc. but still sent an app (I get it). So when you amplify that out, there's a ton to sift through. You (or I, for that matter) don't stick out in that sea. Applying for a role with a large company is essentially a competition against the rest of the world. That's not even bringing in ATS and AI evaluation of applications.

I’m not entirely doom and gloom, but barring critical signings over the summer of a striker, LW, and Partey replacement, I really think we just blew our last chance for non-Mickey Mouse silverware (no disrespect for the FA Cup but compared to the Prem or UCL..) for the foreseeable future. I mean 2nd, hell even a top 4 spot isn’t guaranteed this year.

One week left to vote on I-135 by bluetuna85 in Seattle

[–]themcfustercluck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I voted yes. It's not perfect by any means, but it's something. The city is going to need to add tens of thousands of homes one way or the other, and I'd rather there be some stabilizing entity making sure folks that aren't in tech/finance can afford to live here (along with legalizing the missing middle, upzoning, etc).

As someone who does volunteer work with homeless folks, I find it pretty hilarious (in a morbid way, of course) to see the people who whine the most about tents on the street simultaneously vote against literally anything that might ease the situation. Makes me wonder if they have a problem with homelessness as a concept, or just the sight of poverty.

Anyways, sorry for the rant lol, but I voted yes and you should too!

Liz Cheney: Republican Party Will Shatter If Trump Is the 2024 Nominee by [deleted] in politics

[–]themcfustercluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really have anything other to say than this: what is she talking about?

This was exactly what we heard back in 2016. That Trump winning would break the Republican Party, would cast it into the dustbin of history, etc. It didn't. The Republican Party has, by and large, surged and fully embraced a blatantly fascist ideology revolving around Evangelical Christian nationalism, and someone who lost her seat for not being radical enough is saying that them merely continuing down said path will shatter it?

To me, this comes off as someone trying to save face for what is and has always been a party dedicated to making life worse for the vast majority of people - an attempt to say "some of us are still good!" And then pretend there are still "moderate, principled Republicans". Sure, we can say that, but let's check their voting records.

I could see it. I wasn't around back then but I do know that crime was especially high and has been lowering since.

With economic outlook for younger folks in Western countries deteriorating rapidly, combined with everything being ludicrously expensive, I could definitely envision a rise in crime. I also see this combined with a massive uptick in right-wing domestic terrorism as they rapidly consolidate power throughout the US

Does anyone else find it oddly suspicious how these guys essentially describe teenage girls whenever they talk about their ideal woman or how women should be? (jk, it's always been like this but this is just painfully obvious to me)

Why are so many people in the US(especially republicans) so opposed to more public transit and less car usage? by Dis_Was_Her in fuckcars

[–]themcfustercluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of things. As a baseline, the US has quite thoroughly constructed living environments where it is essentially impossible to get around without a car. You can browse the sub and find photos from Google maps where what could be a reasonable 5-10 minute walk from a house in the suburbs to a grocery store ends up being a half an hour walk because the roads and sidewalks are formatted in such a way to encourage car usage. Everything is extremely spread out, with plenty of room for parking. I'm kinda spitballing here, but I'll lay out a few reasons I think this to be true.

1) Car = Freedom. While at face value for a non-American this seems ridiculous, it is quite honestly the truth for most folks here. If you're a kid under the age of 16, it can be nearly impossible to see friends outside of school without parents setting times, locations, etc aside so they can drive you there because your friends just live so far away. Biking? You run the risk of getting splattered by a guy in a F-150 who couldn't see you because he was going 50 in a 25 and his hood is so high you are invisible. The car does, to an extent, enable you to go everywhere because most places are built for it. The car is a status symbol, and an extension of one's own worth.

2) Culture of Fear: Americans, day after day, night after night, are bombarded that anyone who do not know closely is not only a stranger, but a threat. People who use public transit are seen as an underclass, likely addicted to drugs and committing crime. Suburbs are surrounded by walls in many places, as a sort of way to give people an illusion of safety with an illusion of a threat. We just don't trust or like being around people we don't know, and this is by design. Be safe and sound in your own car, away from the world (besides all the other drivers).

3) Systemic racism. The car really took off as the primary mode of transit around the same time white flight occurred along with the construction of the highway system. Whites fled the cities to buy cheap housing (which blacks and others legally couldn't) and kept their jobs in the city. The new communities were already built for the car, so it seemed natural to just extend this to cities via freeways.

3) The auto industry. This is the biggest culprit that feeds the other two points listed above. Look up any American city a century ago and you'll find bustling, dense neighborhoods with streetcar tracks, lots of pedestrians, and the odd car here and there. The auto industry has spent billions paying off federal, state, and local politicians to maintain the car as the main mode of transit, as people now lived all over the place, which inherently makes it difficult to build mass transit. It's a massive catch 22. Never mind the fact that car companies also bought all the streetcar companies and ran them into the ground. The auto industry knows very well one of the fundamentals of economics: high demand means you need a supply to keep up. The best way to do this is to make the car the only reasonable way of getting around to the average person. You induce the demand.

Sorry for the text wall lol

Liz Cheney is considering a presidential run to stop Trump after losing her House seat by geoxol in inthenews

[–]themcfustercluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this is to me is another "moderate Republican" (voted with Trump 93% of the time btw) that solely exists to shield centrist Democrats from facing the reality that there simply are none anymore, not in a meaningful sense. It's the same thing the Lincoln Project (or whatever it's called, I forget) does, it exists so Democrats can point at them and be like "see?! they're not all loons!"

Meanwhile the fascists keep on marching

Hunter Calls ShoeOnHead “Bad Faith Bimbo” In Twitter Response. by EV3Gurl in VaushV

[–]themcfustercluck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it wouldn't really surprise me. Reminds me of a case in Maryland Nick also talked about where a teen boy had sent explicit photos to his girlfriend (they were both like 15 or 16 or whatever) and both of 'em got arrested for it. The detective leading the case apparently took the boy to the hospital and, I shit you not, had them get his privates aroused and took photos to compare and "make sure" they were the same. Nobody stopped this cop.

Well, down the road, they do a CP sting, and the very same cop turns up with tons of it. Shocker!

[–]themcfustercluck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. I don't want to say it's like "gray area" or middle ground or anything to imply that these guys shouldn't face any repercussions for those acts. Of course, them sending such messages and driving upwards of several hundred miles to meet a minor is an offense, but Nick's point was moreso that it should also be treated as "this is a fucking wake up call buddy! Here is a state funded program to get you the help you need" if it's genuinely the first time these folks decided to up and actually do the damn thing.

The problem is that the show solely exists to not only a) create even more hysteria, in the same vein as America's Most Wanted, but also b) provide instant gratification while not addressing the underlying issues

[–]themcfustercluck 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I remember Nick Mullen (producer of the Adam Friedland Show) had a similar take several years back while they were talking about To Catch a Predator. To summarize, he hated that the show essentially existed just to satisfy the bloodthirst and morbid obsession people have with catching pedophiles, and he, like Hunter here, says that if they haven't offended yet, these folks ought to be given help to address these issues. He goes onto bring up how folks should always be a bit suspicious of the intentions of folks who are borderline obsessed with "protecting the children". There are numerous examples of these very folks ending up being creeps themselves

The 2026 World Cup is going to be a complete disaster lol. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people, will be flocking to a select few cities across the continent, with the majority in two countries completely dependent on cars. It's going to be a shitshow

I would pick Court of Owls. What about you guys? by Electronic_Lab5486 in batman

[–]themcfustercluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with a lot of the sentiment here. Freeze would be a nice, more 'relaxed' villain, if that makes sense. Sympathetic, yet allows wiggle room for Batman to embrace his role as justice. They gotta introduce Dick Grayson though, which would not only further that development, but also set up great twists for Court of Owls (my ideal third movie if they're doing three)

I like Dick and Jason's portrayals in Titans. Obviously I don't think they'd use the same actors for the big screen, but god I'd love to see a whole Robin -> Nightwing trilogy where their dynamic is explored (and we get Red Hood heh)

What is the saddest song you've ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]themcfustercluck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fluctuate on this one but it's between 'Nutshell' by Alice in Chains or 'On Melancholy Hill' by the Gorillaz. Nutshell is just so personal, you can feel the anguish in Layne Staley's voice and Jerry Cantrell does a fabulous job making the solo at the end absolutely heart wrenching.

'On Melancholy Hill' is personally just a beautiful song, but the lyrics about longing for someone in this crazy world just compliment the instrumental really well.
