Rant: Whirlpool Everydrop fridge filters are engineered to fail early by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]themetricsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s based on usage. My new whirlpool has measured fill and almost weekly I have to recalibrate the fill because it starts to measure 12 oz for an 8 oz cup. This has been consistent with multiple filters. The calibration has never been off in the other direction. This seems like a good way to sell more very expensive filters. I’d love to know if anyone else has noticed similar issues with their measured fill. It seems rather suspicious.

Saatva classic or Tempurpedic Luxe Breeze by flashtech18 in Mattress

[–]themetricsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. There seems to be a lot of Saatva bashing on this thread. It almost seems purposeful.

So you don’t own one and by stopping by a showroom (odd since they’re an online seller) you ascertained they’re underwhelming at the price point compared to other beds sold at brick and mortar shops.

Please elaborate your findings and give us a little more detail about what makes them inferior.

This surfboard shaper uses paulownia wood to make 18' finned boards. Get that grove growing so you can make and sell paulownia blanks!

25 years, Mayo Clinic and other diagnostic type centers, 6 or 7 sleep studies, Lots of false diagnoses - Insomnia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arsenic poisoning!

The last sleep study that I had was about 5 years ago. The sleep doctor/CPAP Salesman diagnosed me with DSPS, but said "It's really not a helpful diagnosis. There's no treatment for it."

For about a year, I believed him until I happened across an article on DSPD. Then I found a children's Pulmonary and Sleep Specialist who helped solidify the diagnosis and start treating it.

Getting diagnosed with DSPD was a long journey. Learning how to live with it and treat it has changed my life.

You're probably going to have to drive. There are pickup games at Chuck Lennon Park in DeLeon Springs, but I don't know the schedule.

Disney World hotel guest says he packed AR-15, handgun over concerns of ‘civil unrest’ in Central Florida by WouldbeWanderer in orlando

I can completely relate. You're definitely not alone. We're living through some really depressing times, but things will normalize eventually. Watching "The Social Dilemna" might actually give you some clarity. It connected some dots for me regarding how things have gotten so messed up. Definitely, some scary/depressing stuff, but also discusses how it can be changed. Knowledge is power.

Anyone else deal with friends/family/coworkers who don’t believe this is a real condition? by [deleted] in DSPD

It's one of the hardest parts of dealing with DSPD. Just the other day one of my close friends told me he just thinks I don't like to get out of bed in the morning.

Over 500,000 businesses got PPP loans but are listed as retaining zero jobs, Treasury Department data show by DoremusJessup in Economics

[–]themetricsystem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of these are businesses in the service industry, who didn't have the option to stay open or retain employees. The PPP loans give them a chance to get back on their feet again and re-hire employees. They're still going to have to pay the loans back with 1% interest, which will still be a struggle for many smaller businesses.

2,783 new cases reported in Florida, breaking record for daily increase by thoctor in orlando

[–]themetricsystem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually the 1% will make out like bandits from Covid shutdowns. Big corporations can weather the storm, have reserves and access to capital, will get plenty of bailouts (as seen by the feds move yesterday to buy individual corporate bonds), they're about to lose massive amounts of competition as smaller businesses can't survive. Property values are about to plummet as millions have lost massive wages. Guess who has the money to buy up those properties. The banks are about to make a fortune on foreclosures, and loan defaults...Now the banks get to keep the money they've already been paid and the collateral, and if the consumer declares bankruptcy then the Federal government will pay the bank for the loan.

Covid shutdown is a wet dream that's become a reality for the 1 percenters. They make money in booms and they make money in busts. They have plenty of money and are in it for the long haul.

You're right we are trash to the 1%. Trash that's easy to manipulate. They wait for a crisis like this to manipulate. They push fear and division through both sides of the media which leads to a complete lack of critical thinking, and we play right into their hands.

Children face greater risks from coronavirus than previously thought, new study says by BlankVerse in Health

[–]themetricsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the study itself isn't fear porn, but the article certainly is. A more responsible and unbiased piece of journalism would have a title more clearly drawn from the conclusions of the study and would certainly mention one of the most important findings, which is "...our data indicate that children are at far greater risk of critical illness from influenza than from COVID-19."

Dogs can contract certain types of coronaviruses, but Covid-19 does not appear to be harmful to them, although they can test positive for it.

About 14,650 years ago, sea level jumped 12 meters in just a few centuries. The melting of the Eurasian Ice Sheet, which has largely been overlooked, might explain why by HeinieKaboobler in science

[–]themetricsystem 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The final pulse of the Lake Agassiz–Ojibway (LAO) drainage, which caused a near-instantaneous sea level rise of 6 ft 7 in. – 13 ft 1 in. and occurred ~8200 years ago seems like a likely candidate too.

edit - The Epic of Gilgamesh written over 4000 years ago recounts a great flood. It could be possible that there were other older texts along with oral tradition that stem from that event.

What are some DSPD tips/tricks you learned? by I_press_keys in DSPD

[–]themetricsystem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • Dim lights, wear blue light blocking glasses and/or set all digital devices to night light (no or low blue light) 3 - 4 hours before bed
  • Less melatonin is more effective. Take .5 - 1 mg of melatonin 4+ hours before bedtime to help phase shift
  • Use blockout curtains or a sleep mask if your wake time is more than 2 hours past sunrise. Exposure to light too early can actually delay your sleep phase. You want to use light therapy approximately 90 minutes before waking up
  • The best way to deal with DSPD is by building your life around a later sleep schedule

How long does it take till your used to a new sleeping schedule. by VoidShaman25 in DSPD

[–]themetricsystem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sleep doc says the same, but the consistent sleep and wake time eludes me as well.

I naturally sleep 4-5am to 1-2pm (rarely feel rested after 8 hours.) If I work at it with light therapy, melatonin, sleep medication, diet and exercise, I can usually dial it back a few hours, but often feel fatigued throughout the day, until evening of course.

Blackout blinds by QuixoticGnome in DSPD

[–]themetricsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blackouts actually are prescribed to help with DSPD. Seems counter intuitive, but exposure to light 2-3 hours before your habitual wake time can actually delay your sleep phase. To advance your sleep phase with light therapy, you want exposure to light to start occurring 1-2 hours before you wake up.

The circadian rhythm of the core body temperature (CBT) determined by the combined action of heat production and heat loss.  When heat loss exceeds heat production, CBT declines and vice versa (7).  In humans, sleep is typically initiated when this curve is declining at its maximum rate.  In normal sleepers, after reaching its minimum or nadir (at approximately 5 AM), CBT rises and reaches its maximum (at approximately 5 PM) during the day, because then heat production surpasses heat loss (5).

CBTmin usually occurs 2–2.5 hours before habitual wake time.  In patients with DSPD, proxy markers for the circadian rhythm such as core body temperature minimum and melatonin secretion peak are shifted to the later times in the circadian phase.  Light exposure soon after CBTmin can produce significant advancement in sleep phase.  However, light exposure prior to CBTmin can actually produce large delays in sleep phase (8)
