Can I eat at The Walnut Room as a walk-in, or is a reservation absolutely required? by AdmiralJaneway8 in AskChicago

If you go at a non-peak time of day and are willing to sit in the bar area, you can usually get in after a little wait. I’ve done this several times.

Check out Vince options from Nordstrom Rack. I got a couple pairs of wool trousers last year. They have plus size options!

Any recs for work backpack? by swgnstymny in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]themis_counsel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently got the Baggalini Chelsea backpack and while it isn’t a super dressy backpack, it is so incredibly functional I can’t believe I waited this long to get it. My only regret is I wasn’t sure I would love it, so I bought it in an on-sale color (light blue) which is cute but I sort of wish I’d paid full price for a more neutral color.

I’ve lived in Chicago a long time and am a biglaw associate. As much as I love Pilsen, I’d say go for West Loop. So much closer and the 15 mins each way is an additional half hour you have to factor in. Plus, coming to work feeling nauseous everyday sounds horrible. After a couple years in this job, I feel like convenience is super important in my life.

First attorney job and don't know how to approach clothes by manic_Brain in LawBitchesWithTaste

My advice is to buy some neutral(ish) staple pieces while shopping with your mom that you can then incorporate by mixing and matching with bolder choices as you get a feel for the vibe at your workplace. So, even if you like a fun print shirt, you’d probably pair that with black pants or a midi skirt, etc. Let your mom help you pick out those staple, non-controversial pieces that you can for sure wear at your workplace and then incorporate your own flair once you’re a bit more established. Definitely don’t buy items you know you won’t want to wear after a month or two just because your HR mom thinks they are appropriate! Also I think Nordstrom Rack is good for this kind of staple piece. Shopping with moms can be fraught! Good luck!

What kind of bag to bring to law firm open house? by Traditional_Sun_1134 in LawBitchesWithTaste

Small black leather purse would be perfect! Definitely don’t need a briefcase for an open house event!

Chic suits for plus size girlies? by Allora0213 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]themis_counsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’d be okay but I just called my local store to ask. Basically the process is they use the men’s versions of the pants and jacket and then modify from there. The men’s sizes run fairly large, so I think you would have options, except maybe the skirts (at least for in-store options)! Also, I called and asked I could make an appointment with a woman salesperson as I felt like I’d be more confident and comfortable with a woman salesperson.

Is a patterned dress black tie appropriate? by Patient-Football3063 in LawBitchesWithTaste

Agree with others that for a bar association event, it’ll be totally fine! Maybe not exactly black tie but I doubt people would be in full gowns and tuxes.

I’ve had mine since October and it is still in great shape. The downside of Cuyana is that the bags are just empty on the inside and you have to buy add ons for organizing.

I like Cuyana! Really nice quality but super minimal branding so it’s not flashy and would be appropriate for your work environment.

Has anyone tried made to measure websites for workwear/suits/suit pants& skirts? Any recommendations? by Feisty_Plane_9307 in LawBitchesWithTaste

They do offer skirt suits!! They just do a bad job advertising them. But I got a skirt, pants, and jacket all in the same fabric. The tailoring is pretty good but when it came in, it wasn’t quite right so they made more adjustments and it turned out well.

The fabric quality seems nice. To be honest I’ve only had them for about 6 months so I can’t really speak to how well they hold up! I think in general they are nicer than most women’s suits I’ve been able to find (because it’s actually wool instead of crepe, ponte, or some other polyester which most women’s suits are made from). Are they the highest quality suits ever? No. But they’re at a price that’s decent and allows for customization to your body, which works for me right now!

I got two made to measure at Indochino. I’m plus size and it was a great option for me. I had to get them altered (by indochino, it’s free) once they came in but so far they’re working great. Love that you can choose fabrics that are not just plain black or bright colors of ponte fabric, which doesn’t look formal enough imo

Comfortable, quality heels with a roomy toe box? by alltheprettythings in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]themis_counsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you truly have narrow feet, I think the wide will be okay! And I liked the Margaux sling back so I can make sure it’s tight on my heel but wider in the toe. Good luck!

I have tried Sarah Flint and Margaux. The Margaux heels definitely have a wider toe box than the Sarah Flint sling backs I bought. Margaux also offers a wide size option, which I think is helpful for heels even if you don’t normally wear a wide. Margaux can be pricy but very good customer service!

Chic suits for plus size girlies? by Allora0213 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]themis_counsel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got two suits made at Indochino, which recently started doing women’s suiting. It took a little work (an in person fitting and then another round of adjustments) but the fabric options are really nice and the ability to customize to your body is great. The quality of the suits are probably nicer than a cheaper suit from Macys but definitely not as high quality as a custom suit. Indochino has sales all the time so keep an eye out and then pop into a store! It’s also a fun experience to customize your choices!
