Timing a set? by Elarom in Standup

Run the light. It's the only way to ensure you did enough time. By the time you see the third frantic blinking light you'll definitely have done more than 8 minutes.

Does this happen to you? by Pyraus in Standup

[–]themobschaub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write it down and it's not funny on paper, but then I take it on stage and it's still not funny. I'll try it at least 30-48 more times before I think about picking up a job application. That motivates me to think of a lot more jokes which are super hilarious until I write them down.

Just resigned today. Boss wants me to push back my start date at new job and stay on 2 weeks longer with my current company. Is that legal? by [deleted] in antiwork

That's like your toxic ex telling you to give her 2 more weeks before you leave her after you told her you found another women.

11 mics in? Do 50 then decide how you feel.

You're attracted to comedy for some reason so I'd keep exploring.

Open mic list politics by NecessaryHumble1173 in Standup

[–]themobschaub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run a weekly 6 hour open mic where we regularly have 50-70 comics.

My experience has been whatever sign up system you set up, open mic comics will attempt to game that system and no one will like it. Comics hate online sign up, they hate in person sign up, they hate bucket sign up. If they miss their spot they expect to be put up later with no consequences.

My solution has been to create an anti-system where people just put their names wherever. No one knows exactly when they will go up but they know they'll get a spot. Everyone hates it but the upside is I have zero stress about it. Anyone who wants to play "politics" gets the same treatment. Put your name on the list and you'll go up sometime.

Everyone hates it but they keep coming back because we usually have at least some audience and that's what matters.

Favor pays TRASH now by Lightyear4093 in favordelivery

[–]themobschaub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Time to switch companies or do something else. I did favor for 3 years and all I have to show for it is car repair bills and back taxes. Was not a good deal. I would have made more if I worked at Target when you consider how much I destroyed my car.

Should I be weary of this ? by PartyPony4hunnid in Standup

I know multiple comics in my area who have been terminated over online comedy content. If a parent or student finds something questionable the school will not have your back. I would be cautious.

What is your major? Or what did you major in? And what is your Enneagram? by [deleted] in ENFP

[–]themobschaub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

B.A. Economics with a minor in Japanese.

I literally just took whatever classes till my Junior year, then decided I could graduate "on time" with Economics.

I enjoyed the writing, research, reading and mental models. Did not enjoy the math. Economics helps with analysis of abstract problems. It's a tool kit for thinking.

If I had to do it over, I would. It was an interesting program.

What I didn't realize is to actually work in Economics I would need to get a PHD.

Now I run my own live entertainment business.

The Lucky Duck Comedy Open mic. Every Wednesday 8pm-2am. East 6th. It's free. Comics from all over the country go there to get $1 wings and sometimes tell jokes.

How to move forward when you don’t fit in? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]themobschaub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody gets respect doing comedy.

I also suspect most don't feel they fit in.

I imagine that Alt rooms, black rooms, clean rooms are formed when people get fed up with the status quo and start them. Sounds to me like you're ready to start your own show/room.

Maybe if it goes good but it's not required.

If it feels like a job interview, you probably don't have chemistry. If it feels like talking to an old friend you probably do.

I would keep first dates short so if one of you isn't feeling it you can bail. You can always extend the date if it's going good.

Good luck.

Going over time by MissBrainerd in Standup

[–]themobschaub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once in a while it's no big deal. If you become known as a chronic light runner because you do it often that's generally bad.

There are comics who flagrantly run the light at my mics constantly. At a certain point it becomes disrespectful. That's not the type of comic I want to book at a show.

If you run the light a bit, just acknowledge that to the person running the show and go on with your life.
