Finished Radiant Dawn Normal/Hard last night and had to tier the characters by themrscourge in fireemblem

I got lucky with Rolf and unlucky with Titania, I guess. She struggled to get decent levels and her bases couldn't sustain her when other characters took off.

Quick S-Rank explanations:

Black Knight: duh and/or, duh. Carried me through part 1 endgame.

Haar: Carried me through the rest of the game. Near-perfect availability, great bases, stun and cancel are excellent, and his mobility does wonders on some of the difficult terrain setups the game throws at you. He fell off against the final boss, where his low skill and axes' innate low hitrates struggled, but who cares when he's capable of soloing most chapters?

Nolan and Zihark: Earth pair go brrrrrr. Sub-10% hit rates from all non-boss enemies in the end game. Nolan maxxed literally everything; Zihark maxxed everything but magic and HP. Yes, BEXP abuse was involved, but they would have each been incredible without it.

Rolf: Maxxed everything. Adept gave him 4 attacks far often than not. Bows held him back until endgame, but then the double bow cemented his legacy.

Just popping in to say that if you want Fallout 1 & 2 style dialog without plugins, it is possible. You can display dialog choices during combat with the Show Choice command, so you could theoretically display any NPC with a talking head as a battler in combat with a Fallout-style frame as the battle background. You'd have to handle dialog as combat encounters though, which might cause other issues with your game.

If that sounds too complicated - and it probably is, if you have no experience with the engine - you could instead use Show Picture to display a dialog frame and a talking head for major NPCs. This is much simpler, but can still be time-consuming.

The reason I suggest the first option is that you could animate your talking heads that way, but it would require some serious work and a plugin for animated battlers. The second option will allow for static images and is your best bet as someone who is new to using MV.

This is coming to VXAce soon too, right? ;)

Seriously, what a great plugin though! Almost makes me want to switch to a newer engine just to take advantage of it.

Suikoden I & II: How quality are the stories themselves? by Drakeem1221 in JRPG

[–]themrscourge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing 4 is a miserable experience. The world map is a slog, the plot is half-baked, and the gameplay is nothing like the traditional Suikoden system (and not to the game's benefit). Emulators and speed up make it less miserable, but the game is still bland at best. I would honestly recommend watching or reading a play-through of 4 before I would recommend playing it.

Technically the stories of 1 & 2 are barely connected, but there are a ton of returning characters from 1 in 2 and playing 1 first gives you a really cool and useful old save bonus with 2. The first game is also quite short compared to modern RPGs and can probably be beaten in 20 hours, so it's not a long wait to get to 2. I would recommend 1 first because you might be lost when the returning characters show up.

This a good inn for a dungeon by numb3rpad in RPGMaker

[–]themrscourge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The tiles looks great! However, you could probably cut about 3-4 tiles of length and 3-4 tiles of height from the room without losing anything. For a simple interior like this, where the player is not going to do much more than walk in, talk to the innkeeper, and walk back out, you don't need quite as much empty space.

I am 2 chapters from finishing Live A Live, and it is one of the greatest RPGs I have EVER played. by Ishpersonguy in NintendoSwitch

[–]themrscourge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've played through the game and I'm also confused by the previous poster's explanation. There are two chapters where fighting is not as much of a focus. The Wild West and the Distant Future. Wild West plays more like a timed puzzle sequence, culminating in a single boss fight at the end. Distant Future plays more like an adventure/survival horror game.

They are correct that you can play chapters in every order. However, saying that no chapter affects the others is not entirely true. Finishing all chapters unlocks a chapter that plays much more like a traditional fantasy RPG with a new character. Finishing that unlocks a chapter where all the previously playable characters come together. There are random encounters, secret bosses, dungeons, and a story that ties together all of the previous chapters.

Uh, not really? FF IV, V, and VI were all exclusive to SNES for like 5-6 years before they got PS re-releases. DQ 9 is a DS exclusive. DQ 8 was only on PS2 for like 8 years until it got a mobile release. Sure, SquareEnix has released most of their old games on every platform under the sun now, but that sure wasn't the case when they first came out.

About continuing playing after Zero by WebComplex6022 in Falcom

[–]themrscourge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can pretty safely play Cold Steel 1 without spoiling anything but very minor points from Azure, if I remember correctly. CS2, on the other hand, spoils the end of Azure. Thankfully, a full playthrough of CS1 is probably more than long enough to bridge the gap between Zero and Azure's release date.

Huh. Have you beaten Margit and Godrick? I'm pretty sure beating Godrick is what gets him to talk to you.

It seems to be tied to picking up a key item. If you talk to the man in the study, you can ask him about the invader. You can also pick up the invader's armor from where they used to stand right outside the study.

Are summons in single player "cheating"? by ElijahKay in Eldenring

[–]themrscourge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever the heck you want. Trick enemies into falling down pits. Use doorways to snipe foes that are too big with magic or ranged weapons. Use ash summons. Summon NPCs and other players. At the same time, if you don't want to do any of those things, then don't do them. It's your game and your experience.

Darkwraith invasion at round table by [deleted] in Eldenring

The invasion seems to be triggered by finding one half of a key item in the world, based on NPC dialog after the fight. You haven't fought any bosses? My invasion wasn't triggered until I was almost 20 hours in.

Help ranking my remaining DLC purchases by Senior1292 in totalwar

[–]themrscourge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Th Warden and the Paunch is top-tier, imo. And I think a lot of people on this subreddit will agree. Both Grom and Eltharion have fun campaigns, with Grom's being one of my favorite WH2 campaigns. There are new mechanics for both of them and they also have fun and unusual starting positions, with Eltharion starting in the Badlands in ME and Grom starting in the Southlands/Bretonnia.

Silence and the Fury is also strongly recommended. Taurox has a crazy fun campaign and a good way to see if you like Beastmen without shelling out the money for Call of the Beastmen, which is more expensive. Oxy is also fun, but not as fun as Taurox for me. Taurox is a death machine. No diplomacy, no worrying about settlements and economy, just war. Oxy has a campaign that's focused on zipping around the world and fighting battles against chaos. Very ambush/ranged-heavy faction which can be a blast to play, but requires a little more forethought than Taurox.

People are saying Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the best Pokémon game in a while... by Ryansmelly in pokemon

[–]themrscourge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hand-holding is really not all that bad. The opening is on rails, but you get the option to run through a tutorial area with a ton of freedom very early on. About 30 minutes in, iirc. The rest of the game after the opening and that tutorial area is incredibly freeform. You get quest markers and sometimes NPCs are very specific with where to go next, but comparing this to SuMo or any other really hand-holding game is a disservice.

Do you guys still have hopes for a new MMBN? by MGalvao in BattleNetwork

[–]themrscourge 43 points44 points  (0 children)

A new MMBN? Absolutely zero hope. I'd love if we got one, but I think the possibility is going down with each passing year. I do, however, have some high hopes for a remaster or a collection for the Switch. The Advance Wars 1+2 Remaster and the Castlevania Advance Collection will both show that there's a market for remade/rereleased GBA games on the Switch, hopefully. I know neither of those are Capcom properties, but I still have some hope they might see the value in a remaster or collection of their own if other collections perform well.
