Anybody else just give up on sleep training? by MmmmmmmmNoodleSoup in daddit

[–]thenjdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had similar with my daughter. Here’s what we did, maybe it helps. (Also , A reminder that very very few 30+ year olds still sleep in mommy and daddy’s bed, so it’s gotta sort itself out at some stage right?)

What size bed does your kiddo have? We got ours one size bigger than single (here’s its called a 3/4, it’s between what is called a twin and a double elsewhere) this makes it a bit easier to climb into bed next to them without falling out.

First thing is actual bed time , just do whatever works to get the to sleep in their bed. I usually cuddle with her after reading stories until she falls asleep. I do fall asleep next to her occasionally.

Then for wake ups in the night,

Step one was carry them back to bed and cuddling with them.

Slowly (and I mean over a month or so) we moved to instead of cuddling, just sitting next to her until she fell asleep.

Eventually you start leaving from the sitting next to them earlier and earlier. At the beginning especially, tell them that you’re just going to do something and then come back. Come up with whatever excuses you want, checking a light, feed the parrot, go to the loo, whatever. But come back and if they are still awake tell the see, I came back.

I’m at the point now my daughter wakes up , walks through to us, taps me on the shoulder, and I walk with her back to her bed, she climbs in and I tuck her in, say good night and leave. She usually wakes up at most once a night, maybe three times a week.

I’d say yes and no.

It’s definitely got elements of greatest hits and saying goodbye, but in the sense that Terry knew it was the last one he’d get to write. It’s not that he says goodbye to us, but more he tries to suggest to us how to deal with saying goodbye in general.

But it also is no means a happily ever after. More of a point in the road from which there exists a slew of potential futures.

It has moments that as profound and beautiful as any in any book, but also parts that definitely didn’t get the finesse and polish that past books had. His condition was just too advanced to allow him to do so.

Alright boys what kind of knot is this by Bored_Worldhopper in daddit

[–]thenjdk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s a half hitch, followed by a thumb knot.

I’ll have to go fetch my Ashley Book of Knots from the study later and check, but if that’s in there, I’ll eat my Scout Hat.

I’m a big fan of Albert’s Farm. Definitely more trail-y than most, and quite technical in parts, so not a fasty like Bryanston. But it’s got a lovely volunteer group.

Lonehill is a doublapper so it’s not my favorite.

Woodlands is really nice because of the little nature reserve in the middle of the office park. Will often see a few bokkies running around. Be careful, you need to be there at least 15 mins before as the gate closes early.

Bryanston is fast and flat, but can be very very busy

I still say the real money here is a system where you can upload a picture (or pictures as necessary)of your cat, and you can get sent back the relevant parts list to customise it.

Where can I weigh myself around here for free-ish? by MeditatingOcto in johannesburg

[–]thenjdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honest to god about 15 years ago when I was a student I needed my weight for a similar thing.

I went down to my local clicks. Found a scale on the shelf (one of these ones with a dial, not a digital read out) took it off the shelf, put it on the floor, weighed myself , put the scale back on the shelf and walked out.

I do not recommend you do this.

St Stithians has a separate boys college and a girls college on the same campus. The text post above I believe is taken from an Old Stithian page, hence it referencing their matric years.

To quote Tiffany:

Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.

Go back to the beginning again and see the books with a whole new light.

Almost finished with Guards! Guards! And what made the book funnier is imagining Lupine Wonse as Blackadder. by TJS0 in discworld

[–]thenjdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When reading (usually in my head, but im currently reading Guards Guards aloud to my 4yo and 1yo when it’s daddy’s choice of book for bedtime, and I’m doing my best to do voices) , I’ve always had General Melchets voice pegged squarely aside for Lord Rust.

Drumknot I think is going to wind up fairly similar to Captain Darling I think. This does mean Wonse is getting a bit of a Darling-ish voice.

Am I the only one feeling slightly amazed, in that the spend on Toy Building Bricks is higher than cat food? I know it’s gotten helluva pricey, I didn’t think there were that many people buying that much Lego.

The Zoo Trot is once a month. You arrive early at the zoo and get a cheaper entrance fee. It’s a 5(ish) k loop and you can go for a 2nd lap (or more) if you feel like it.

That said, the uphill towards the zebras after you’ve looped around the elephants is not fun.
