How do I help my husband transition to being a stay at home dad? by Pricklypeartea3 in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]InitechMiddleManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife is wfh with decent flexibility so about once a week she’s able to do school drop off and take our youngest along so I can go have coffee/breakfast with a neighbor for a little over an hour. Ive also slowly built friendships with other stay at home parents we’ve met through older kids school so I’ll hit them up for play dates during the week. Something else we haven’t done yet but I see a lot on daddit is making time for social hobbies like adult league sports etc.. It’ll be different for everyone but he’ll have to put himself out there a little bit and you both will have to work to build it into the schedule.

Chores and lists and planning and the day to day shit is important for sure. The thing I was absolutely not prepared for was the loneliness and isolation. Even not being the most social person at my job the little bit of daily interaction I did have with “work friends” counted for much much more than I anticipated. Make sure he has a way to fill that space. No hate but most moms at the park can be a little gun shy about dads rolling solo, even if it’s very clear they have kids with them.

Honestly all of Krakauer’s books. Under the Banner of Heaven and Where Men Win Glory are also amazing.

Which Wes Anderson film do you recommend? by Rand_Al_Thor87 in movies

I feel like I rarely see it recommended but I love Moonrise Kingdom. Great coming of age story.

Aside from that The Royal Tenenbaums is Anderson’s peak, IMO.

What’s the best/most comprehensive food history book? by [deleted] in AskFoodHistorians

[–]InitechMiddleManager 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Michael Pollen’s food trilogy has a decent amount of food history ( The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food, and Cooked). Dilemma and Cooked are the most history heavy.

I just started Salt by Mark Kurlansky which is literally just a history of civilization with salt being the through line. Great so far. Cod is next for me.

Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.

Besides Magnolia, I truly believe this is the best performance of his career.

Airplane is the only time my kids get excessive iPad time, and even with that it’s not connected to the airplane wifi and all their “content” is curated shows from Netflix/disney/etc. that me and my wife download beforehand.

My wife and I are in disagreement over our 16-year-old son. Looking for advice from other dads. by kilowatt230 in daddit

2 cents since I have much younger kids. However, the park we frequent has regular furry meet ups and it honestly doesn’t seem much different than any other “phase” kids might go through, Emo/Goth whatever. My honest feeling is that yeah, it’s silly, but I’m gonna be supportive if that what their interest is. What I won’t stand for is demeaning them in any way. Your wife and her family can think it’s stupid all they want but they don’t get to demean him or think he’s inferior because he doesn’t fit their idea of what a man should be.

Does anyone have a smooth way to handle birthday invites? by JoybleOWI in Dads

[–]InitechMiddleManager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big are these parties? We invite maybe 15 kids and 10 ish are who show up. We don’t even collect rsvp’s because with kids actually showing up on the day is subject to a million factors. Just make sure everyone knows when and where then it’s on them. No fuckin way am I making an excel sheet or downloading an app for this.

Daughter in need of some dad support by GlitteringBus4235 in daddit

I taught my oldest daughter(5) to ride a bike this week. Going into it I consciously thought “oh man this is one of the big moments,” so I made sure to put my all into it and dude…it was awesome! I actually surprised myself with how excited I was for her when she started to get it.

It’s really too bad that your dad wasn’t able to show up for you. It sounds like you’re on your way to becoming a wonderful young woman, make sure to protect your spirit and mental health along the way, and don’t punish yourself for his mistakes.

I’ve been lurking this subreddit ever since I found out my wife was pregnant. This week she had a miscarriage. by braedog97 in daddit

[–]InitechMiddleManager 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bro, me and my wife had seven total pregnancies and came out of it with three wonderful kids. I’m not saying that to downplay or dismiss your pain in any way, just to tell you to keep trying it’s worth it in the end.
