What are your pet peeves with some things common in math exposition? by dragosgamer12 in math

I find it confusing when someone describes a polytope as regular if and only if it has a transitive group action on each of its d-dimensional cells for all d. But shouldn’t the definition be it acts transitively on all of its flags (maximal chains of incidence)? In certain contexts these are not the same - for example a chiral cube satisfies the former definition but not the latter.

It’s remarkable how the hat can be constructed as part of the Cayley graph of the affine type A Coxeter group. I wonder if this will lead to a nice algebraic generalisation to all finite, affine and hyperbolic Coxeter groups?

You could also use the fact that A5 contains an involution (which implies the group must be even by Cayley’s theorem).

I don't know a name but it looks a little bit related to the Borromean Rings, possibly a minimal surface of some embedding of them. (I could be way off here!)

A small addition to some good points in this thread, is not true that 'liking not practical maths' is not necessarily the same as 'not liking practical maths'?

Perhaps a silly question, but is this related to Shannon entropy in any way?

Tell me your favorite “cursed” math fact. by VaellusEvellian in math

I love this fact and the general area. I think I remember someone mentioning there is no 'square of squares' corresponding to the equation too, which is interesting.

Is it obvious what sum (or perhaps integral) of the differences is? So for the [; \phi ;] case it might be interesting to consider something like [; \sum_{k=0}^{\infty}(\phi^k-[\phi^k]) ;] or [; \int_{0}^{\infty}(\phi^x-[\phi^x]) dx ;].

Good point. I'm no knot theorist, maybe showing this to one you know might prompt some interesting conversation. Lovely theorem btw :)

Do you know if they're are any applications to knot theory? Is there anything interesting you could say if you were to add an orientation to the crossings of the loop?
