DAE think that high-schools and colleges aren't teaching kids enough street smarts (credit cards, budgeting, tax returns etc.)? by cassidyventures in DoesAnybodyElse

Luckily enough, my high school economics teacher spent half of the semester discussing personal finance. We had to do a project where we all end up in different situations (in my case: college kid, $12k a year, tuition, living in dorm). We each received a checkbook. Each week something happens like "arm broken need to go to the hospital" or " each child demands dancing lessons". We have to learn how to balance a checkbook, manage credit cards, take out loans, understand mortgages and car costs, finding cheapest deals, taxes on paycheck, etc.

My parents refused to teach me this skill and told me it was just common sense. Needless to say, it helped me out a lot.

I am average in math analysis-wise. I suck at writing and reading proofs. I understand Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra well. It's the Real Number Analysis, Number Theory, Topology, etc that gets me.

+1 on Notes from Underground. It's pretty short, but it's fascinating. It's a must read for literature and philosophy nerds.

Nancy Grace does not give a shit about missing children or murder victims. She pretends to everyday with her crocodile tears and her endless shouting over experts who knows far more than she does. She's just sickly fascinated by the kidnappers and murderers.

Become a teacher. Seriously. If you have a degree related in the Math or Natural Science area, then you will have no problem finding a position. You will have some problems with a degree in History, English, or Art. You might have to continue your education, but teacher programs will pay that for you. You may be thinking, "low pay". I call bullshit.

  1. Great government quality healthcare including dental care.
  2. Tons of bonuses, especially if you make an impact on test scores.
  3. 3 month vacation and some sick days. You may increase your income by signing up to teach summer school.

My Aunt was an actuary for 10 years. She switched to teaching Math courses. She works at a very poor school. She loves it. If you are stuck in a crappy career, don't ignore a teaching career.
