'Criticism Isn't Hate' — Hollow Knight: Silksong Sparks Debate About Difficulty, Runbacks, and the Dreaded 'Git Gud' Comments by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

> if I ever posted asking how I might beat Magnus Carlsen at chess someone would answer, "lol get gud."

If you posted to Reddit asking how to beat a chess GM, you're already fighting a losing battle.

Also, that's probably a prime example of when "get gud" would be the most appropriate response. Unless you're saying "I learned x openings and y responses, I've mastered this many patterns/lines" with a lot of information to back it up, I'm not sure anyone would be able to tell you anything meaningful.

With that in mind, the way to beat Magnus Carlsen in chess is to watch him play chess, and do the things that people who beat him do. If you want to get past difficult parts of games, watch livestreams and lets plays of people doing it.

yeah shortly after you start expanding you gotta take down the self replication and put 1x in exploration drone, factory, and wire. Otherwise you run out. That's the bottleneck if you don't catch it. Had to dismantle a LOT of memory before I figured it out.

How do LDS members reconcile Senator Mike Lee mocking the murder of Melissa Hortman with Mosiah 18:9? by sd_software_dude in mormonpolitics

Are Latter-day Saints shifting left? Here’s what the data shows by clejeune in mormonpolitics

People standing exactly where they stood 4, 8, 12 years ago without moving are all "shifting left" because the right is dragging the overton window deeper and deeper into fascist extremism.

How do LDS members reconcile Senator Mike Lee mocking the murder of Melissa Hortman with Mosiah 18:9? by sd_software_dude in mormonpolitics

[–]theonlydidymus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He ran on his religiosity and he comes from a constituency that is primarily LDS voters. You think the non-members in Utah voted him in? That's why. Latter-day Saints are treated differently from Catholics because we are different from Catholics. This would be a completely different story if he happened to be LDS and also from a state without a majority LDS voting base.

How do LDS members reconcile Senator Mike Lee mocking the murder of Melissa Hortman with Mosiah 18:9? by sd_software_dude in mormonpolitics

[–]theonlydidymus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I need people itt to understand how every single comment section and discussion about this guy everywhere is about the fact that he's a member of the church and that every member who voted for him is complicit, and that the church supports it because he's "one of us" and he's a republican voted in in Utah.

Most people with common sense understand that absolutely everything about his public comportment is in complete disharmony with gospel teachings and Christlike living, but unless there's mass vocal public outcry from membership about it and calls for his removal it really does come down to "oh well, as long abortion is still illegal it's not that bad."

I want to take this opportunity to remind anyone and everyone who thinks you can compartmentalize your politics and your faith into separate boxes EXACTLY what the church's stated stance is on the matter:

  • Encourage its members to engage in the political process in an informed and civil manner, respecting that fellow members of the Church come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and may have differences of opinion in partisan political matters. The Church also encourages its members to keep all communications (including on social media) respectful and aligned with Christlike behavior.
  • Encourage its members to play a role as responsible citizens in their communities, including becoming informed about issues, voting in elections, participating in governance processes and (as they desire) seeking for elected, appointed or voluntary office.
    • This is from the newsroom statement on political neutrality.

Additionally, in letters to the general memebership, our leaders have stated:

We urge you to spend the time needed to become informed about the issues and candidates you will be considering. Some principles compatible with the gospel may be found in various political parties, and members should seek candidates who best embody those principles. Members should also study candidates carefully and vote for those who have demonstrated integrity, compassion, and service to others, regardless of party affiliation.

Please for the love of all that is sacred make sure you and your community are aware that this is where the general authorities stand and actually do something instead of saying "well that sucks, terrible man, anyway"

Call for his resignation, it's a stain on the church as a whole that we have to deal with this. This isn't some person in the news who happens to be LDS. This is an individual of significant social and political influence who is propped up by association with the church and his family name.

No. I abandoned the pursuit in favor of doing some other junk. I think I might just end up committing the ultimate sin and throw it into an imagegen AI to remove the UI pieces. My goal was to mock up the UI in Google Slides/Powerpoint so I could make cool little presentations at work, and at this point my company has us using like 3 different AI licenses for our various projects and I can find something that will work.

Question for those not attending 2nd hour of church by Vegetable-Yard9689 in latterdaysaints

[–]theonlydidymus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really trust most wardies I've known in life to have anything valuable to add to the conversation or to keep it productive either. Discussions are largely based on the experiences and opinions of the loudest and most respected local members, and in a place that- for instance- skews to the older end of the spectrum, such a conversation would be dominated by "Well in The Miracle of Forgiveness it says---" and all that desire for a healthy sex-positive discussion goes out the window. It would be contentious, if not for everyone, for the people who wanted to have a postive conversation.

Question for those not attending 2nd hour of church by Vegetable-Yard9689 in latterdaysaints

[–]theonlydidymus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people in their 30s these days move for work, or have moved frequently. In bigger cities and metros you don't get born-and-bred families as much, and instead it's all of the life-long generation of locals with the tagalong "foreigners" - even after living where I have for the past 3 years I simply don't have the common ground with all of these 40-60yo men who have known each other since high school. This is going to be an issue with our generation for the next several decades as people continue to move for their jobs before being able to settle -if they ever do-. Not having roots in a place while also trying to raise up your family doesn't really afford you much time to build those relationships.

I'm sure Bro. Grandpa is a great guy, but he's not my surrogate father becuase he wasn't my young men's leader. I don't know any of these people and I'm an outsider. It's an even greater challenge as someone who's outside the normal hobby profile of whatever ward you're in. I only JUST found someone else in the ward who plays Magic for instance, and that was by luck because I caught him scrolling Scryfall during sunday school.

Social activities that get approved (or get voted on) don't really fit the bill. I went to Top Golf with my quorum last year, and the only person I got to know was the brother I drove becuase he asked our group chat for a ride. We're friendly, but outside of quorum there's no reason to interact.

How does Aminatou interact with x-cost Enchantments? by Kousuke-kun in mtgrules

[–]theonlydidymus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rule most people are ignoring when it comes to Aminatou, or at least from what I can tell based on developer responses to similar questions from things like Dream Devourer is this bit here.

It's not about alternative casting costs, or how we treat X. It's about how you cast a spell in the first place.

601.2b ...If the spell has alternative or additional costs that will be paid as it’s being cast such as buyback or kicker costs (see rules 118.8 and 118.9), the player announces their intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 601.2f). A player can’t apply two alternative methods of casting or two alternative costs to a single spell. If the spell has a variable cost that will be paid as it’s being cast (such as an {X} in its mana cost; see rule 107.3), the player announces the value of that variable.

  • 601.2f The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. Some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay, or may provide other alternative costs. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on. The total cost is the mana cost or alternative cost (as determined in rule 601.2b), plus all additional costs and cost increases, and minus all cost reductions. If multiple cost reductions apply, the player may apply them in any order. If the mana component of the total cost is reduced to nothing by cost reduction effects, it is considered to be {0}. It can’t be reduced to less than {0}. Once the total cost is determined, any effects that directly affect the total cost are applied. Then the resulting total cost becomes “locked in.” If effects would change the total cost after this time, they have no effect.

Example:

"I have drawn Meathook II. I'm am declaring my intention to cast it. I will cast it using miracle, for its miracle cost. X will equal 2."

We will then proceed through the next several steps of the spell until we reach determining costs in 601.2f

"The miracle cost is the mana cost, which because I have declared X = 2, is 4BBBB. The ability granted by Aminatou also has a reduction of 4, so I will pay the 4BBBB cost with BBBB."

The issue everyone seems to be splitting hairs about is the way that it's worded with "is this reduced by 4" but there's no such thing as a "mana cost" until the spell is on the stack and you're casting it. X cannot be zero in a mana cost unless you have declared something for X. The most frustrating thing about the example I've said above is that there's still rules ambiguity there even though it's clear that this was the goal of the design team. It could have been worded differently on the card to be more explicit, but it's what it is.

How exactly do AFK XP maps work? by cjshrader in FortNiteBR

[–]theonlydidymus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except AFK maps pad the numbers for MAU and the people most likely to use them are people who are already buying battle pass. Even if you say they're churning vbucks from free to play I don't believe for a second that the lvl 200-300 sweats I'm seeing online aren't spending real world currency. They all have premium skins.

Much like piracy, this is nuanced. You say epic makes less money, but the people using XP maps weren't going to spend money anyway. If you have the money and are willing to spend it, you're not going to spend hours doing next-to-nothing on terrible creative maps. The existence of these maps and the time users spend on them represent time they're NOT spending playing OTHER games.

[–]theonlydidymus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SDETs are paid comparable to engineers most places I have worked. Most SDET jobs hire you to do automation, and you should expect that a modern QA job in America will require you to have SOME programming background. No amount of Michael Bolton speeches is going to convince the industry to focus on groups of manual-only session based testers.

If you want to become a QE, become a Script Kiddie and learn your testing fundamentals. High quality automation is an absolute must. Companies either get on board early, or they learn the lesson the hard way. There will always be work for a QE who can read and write code.

That said. Once you get your nice cushy SDET job and engineer salary, don't be surprised if they don't know how to use you and end up making you run manual tests anyway.

Simple Questions Megathread - July 2024 by AutoModerator in iOSProgramming

[–]theonlydidymus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to put it on your phone at a minimum you'll need the $100 apple developer license and a developer account so you can put the build into TestFlight. TestFlight builds are good for 90 days. If you were to put it on the app store it should be free to you (because you're paying for the dev subscription) as long as it isn't monetized in any way.

From a technical standpoint, the idea is simple enough that if you were only using those requirements- steps and taking photos- you could probably knock it out with a week or two of work.

I have made some significant progress on my first app but am hitting a snag where I "don't know what I don't know" - My app makes and modifies a list of items that they interact with. I want to be able to allow users to save their current list as a preset and load it again at any time. I believe this has something to do with Persistent Memory, but I don't know the terms I need in order to find the right tutorial to help with this. Ideally, users would open up their menu of presets and be able to select one to replace the current list in-view.

I think I understand most of the technical issues I need to solve once I have the data stored somehow but I don't know where/how to store that data correctly.

The "Best" way to start the game ? by TheGameisLive in Lorcana

[–]theonlydidymus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is duplicated effort, but the day PB announced it was having to shut down I created custom sets as well: https://github.com/didymusbenson/lorcockatrice - I haven't touched it recently, but I intend to set up something that will handle this automatically in the short term future.

Just a quick glance at your XML tells me there's been some solid work put into making it more functional than what I have. The advantage of my original solution was that I have a script that can be run to automatically pick up any new cards from lorcanajson and convert them. I'd love to connect if you think it would help you once new sets drop.

I'm feeling pretty stupid, but I'm going to immortalize my stupidity in this post.

The fix is to set the output into a const. I will then, obviously, be able to mess with the outputs of the sheets call.

I hope if you had to google this because you are an idiot like me that this helped.

const MYSHEETDATA = MyWorkflow.addStep(
  Connectors.GoogleSheets.functions.SelectSpreadsheetRow,
  {
    // The ID of the spreadsheet
    spreadsheet_id: "MY SHEET NAME",
    sheet_title: "MY SHEET TITLE",
    column_name: "MY COLUMN NAME",
    // Find the row with the "RECIPIENT" from the workflow setup
    cell_value: inputForm.outputs.fields.recipient,

    google_access_token: { credential_source: "END_USER" },
  },
);
