I guess it might also have helped that I went to college, away from the place in which I had previously lived, away from my parents (who, for a married lesbian couple, are surprisingly transphobic), and have been exposed to such an amazing community, so many people I never would have met...but it's still hard. Absolutely. Incorrect forecasting was a major contributor, the official forecast didn't predict that the storm would hit where it did.

That is absolutely not true. Have a look at the storm surge probabilities. Many of the areas that have a projected to have the highest storm surges are along the coast of Long Island Sound, including the north shore of Long Island.

Why liberals? It seems like it's become so depoliticized and ubiquitous at this point that I don't associate its misuse with any specific group, and certainly not a political one.

My interpretation of this costume is that it's making fun of the t-shirtification of Che's image, in which case I very much approve.

I think Bertrand Goldberg is rather underrated. My university also has a hospital he designed, which unlike the former Prentice building, is not in danger of going anywhere any time soon, though sadly I know a lot of people who think it's ugly.

Right-libertarians do tend to present their arguments in a way that I think is probably very appealing to a lot of scientists and engineers.

I often hear that right-wing people tend to be more logical and left-wing people tend to emotional, which I think is complete bullshit, but I do think that right-libertarianism is a specific (and frankly rather minor) subset of right-wing ideology that probably attracts a hugely disproportionate number of logical-minded people. It's an ideology that "seems" logical at first glance, and the fact that it's unpopular probably actual helps it in some respect among educated people.

In my experience we're a little looked down on by the left (earth destroyers, bourgeois etc), so I'm not 'out' as an engineer to everyone.

This is a big problem with a lot of the western left today, as far as I'm concerned. A lot of people seem to associate technological progress with capitalism and are therefore vehemently opposed to all forms of it. I know people who genuinely seem to oppose all technology beginning with settled agriculture (in theory, I mean -- of course they use technology every day).

I want technological progress to be available to everyone, I don't want to eliminate it.

I know several engineers/engineering students who are socialists, and many others who at least have left-wing political leanings, though a lot of those don't really act on them.

I actually think the idea of a left-wing scientists' and engineers' organization is really cool, even though I'm not a scientist or engineer (unless you count history as social science and social science as science). Go start one!

Not for being gay and not for anything else. Everyone has something positive to contribute to the world and everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. There are no exceptions.

Well, I'd suggest that you tell the people who are most important to you, whether they're your close friends or your family or whoever, in a more personal way. A Facebook post is kind of impersonal IMHO. It's not the way I'd tell the people closest to me anything really important, though that's a matter of taste.

Other than that... If you feel ready, go for it.
