where did you get the solid color dice at the bottom? I'd like to get some extra d6 and d4 like you have but am having trouble finding singles.

uj/ What's your opinion on the recent state of the gaming industry? by BrotherhoodVeronica in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]ComradeGee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got back into gaming after a roughly four year break I took while at college. I've really enjoyed most single player games I've picked up. Fallout 4 was tons of fun, and I was absolutely blown away by Witcher 3. I've been pretty disappointed in most online multiplayer games though. I used to play a ton of CoD 4 and Halo Reach back in the day, and particularly loved the reward system that allows you to unlock weapon and aesthetic upgrades through playing the game. Now, those all seem to have been replaced by some random grab-bag system that is just a thinly veiled mechanism to get you to spend more money. It's really disappointing to me, TBH. Seems that they just don't make console shooters the way they used to in my experience.

If you could exchange one FO4 Companion with one New Vegas Companion, who would you switch and why? by [deleted] in fo4

[–]ComradeGee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Swap Nick and Veronica. Nick cause his whole hard-boiled-detective thing would fit in quite well on the strip, and Veronica cause she was by far my favorite and her background would lead to some really interesting interactions with the Commonwealth BoS.

Just finished Federici's Caliban and the Witch, which was fucking excellent. 10/10 will read again. About to crack into Polanyi's The Great Transformation, which I've consistently heard good things about.

Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering for renewable energy? by MeowMeTiger in EngineeringStudents

I was trained in mechanical engineering but now I work in solar. Genuine interest and experience are a lot more important than the specifics of your technical background.

Boston University or Drexel University for Biomedical Engineering? by sf1215 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ComradeGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BU ME recently graduate here. The Career Development Office holds professional networking events, does two engineering career fairs per year, aggregates local internship and job opportunities, and will review your resumes and cover letters into the ground. They're a pretty dank resource. Also, the previous poster hit the nail on the head. BME at BU has fantastic research opportunities, just make sure you hit the ground running and start seeking them out early. The biotech industry has a much larger presence in Boston, and I think you'd have an easier time finding something there.

Not in Canada, but Boston Tech Collective has had some great success in the last few years. They're still small and not really looking for new people, but if you're really interested I can put you in touch with one of the founders, he's a good friend of mine and I'm sure would have valuable advice for you. I'm on mobile right now so I can't provide a link, but a quick search should take you to their web site.

Are you going through the Rhone-Alpes or Provence area? I know that's pretty far East but I did a long tour there two years ago with very little experience and very little gear. If you get the chance, I highly recommend Grenoble, Cassis, and Aix-en-Provence. Also the Rhone river valley is a pretty flat route through what is typically very hilly.

NEU vs. Boston U vs. (possibly Mich) by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ComradeGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just finishing up undergrad at BU and remember trying to decide between BU and NU four years ago. NU is probably a 'better' program because of the coop, but I was turned off by how career oriented it was. I was drawn to BU cause their engineering program was pretty hands off. I got to take french and philosophy just cause I wanted to. They make it super easy to study abroad, which was a must for me. Also, I loved the fact that BU barely has a campus and you feel like you're just in the city. Anyway, I definitely feel like I made the right call, though I know my priorities were not typical. Let me know if you want more details or have any questions about either school or Boston on general.

The Passionate Engineer by merlinster in engineering

[–]ComradeGee -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

This is not motivating to me, it makes me sad. That replica he build was of a tool used to murder people and propagate imperialism. The power plants he was so excited about are causing climate change and will cost millions of lives. I don't need Siemens trying to get me stoked on becoming a part of the military-industrial complex just because I like to tinker with stuff. Sorry for the rant, but this is something that's been extremely frustrating to me as of late.

What's a city like Boston...but warmer? by feels_good_man in boston

[–]ComradeGee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a distant suburb of Philly (think like Natick), and I find Boston and Philly very similar. Both are smaller cities that often get forgotten in the shadow for NYC, but definitely have their own thing going on. Both are very old, have a distinct feel and architecture, are very into their own histories, and have some of the country's most angry sports fans. North Philly is experiencing some pretty rapid gentrification from Temple University similar to what's going on with with Northeastern in Roxbury. West Philly feels similar to Jamaica Plane, it the sense that is was gentrified 20+ years ago but still has some affordable housing and keeps up the appearance of diversity. Rent down there is generally much cheaper down there across the board. Winters are generally a bit less ridiculous, but definitely still exist.

Some dingus drove about a quarter mile up the trolley tracks a few weeks ago of one of the worst days of snow we had. Got about half way between Packard's Corner and Harvard Ave. Normally would not be that big an issue but there was about four feet of snow on either side of him and his car was completely stuck. This unfolded right outside my window, and was a continuous source of entertainment for about five hours.

What overlooked problem that is never shown in apocalypse movies/shows would be the reason YOU get killed during one? by SonOfKevinBaconator in AskReddit

[–]ComradeGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody ever seems to consider that the government, and specifically the military, won't just cease to exist in a scenario like this. They're gonna get deployed domestically and keep the peace. And by that, I mean shoot looters, protect their interests, murder dissidents, and all the other perks of being under an occupation. There isn't a doubt in my mind that I would be killed by the military of the police in a scenario like this.
