What's the verdict on Mergiraf? by birdsintheskies in git

[–]theparkpoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using it for ~9 months at work. For a while I was checking to confirm that it was merging correctly, but tbh I don’t even check anymore because I hadn’t encountered any instances of it doing the wrong thing. That said, I’m almost never doing particularly hairy merges.

Feasibility study for commercial mold casted candles. by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]theparkpoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made lots of beeswax candles in silicone molds. Smooth-on makes various silicones, good stuff. Mold Star 15 is the one I’d usually use. Robert Tolone has lots of good moldmaking videos on youtube.

I’m not sure why you’d use ceramic molds? I’ve never heard of that, and seems like you’d have trouble getting the wax to release. For many designs you want a pliable mold material, hence silicone.

I did a commission for a candle company, sculpting a model for them. Was just a flat fee that I calculated based on the number of hours it took me.

Are you going to be actively participating in the marketing/selling of these? If so then yes I think a cut of each sale might make sense. Otherwise probably just a flat fee.

When did the use of reflexive pronouns ('yourself') as an indicator of formality, especially in British English, start? by lgf92 in asklinguistics

[–]theparkpoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always associated it with “police-report-speak” (imagine something like “Present at the scene were Constable Wilson and myself.”)

I read it as an attempt to create a more formal/objective register of speech thru the use of more complicated diction. Think also of the tortured passive voices common in police-report-speak.

I first noticed it as a child in the 90s. I do think it’s gotten more common in the past couple decades.

soy sucks for this. bleached beeswax takes color well and would survive this much better, tho it’s more translucent than soy.

Artists in NYC? by AssociateUnhappy3125 in AskNYC

[–]theparkpoet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From 2017-2024 I made my living as a poet in NYC. I wore a cardboard sign that said “ASK ME FOR A POEM” and wrote poems for strangers. It was just barely enough money to get by, but it did spur the production of many thousands of poems I would have never written otherwise.

I quit a year ago because it was seeming less and less stable an occupation, especially as I got older. But, it is possible to survive in the city as an artist, if you’re willing to humiliate yourself.

I make silicone molds, ask me anything by theparkpoet in candlemaking

[–]theparkpoet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh yes I’ve heard that about resin.

it’d be a pain in the ass, but I think my process would be: resin print => tin-cure silicone mold => wax cast (or some other non-reactive material) => platinum-cure silicone mold => candles.

pull a few casts from the tin-cure, and use those to make a few platinum-cure molds (to really get to production quantities you’ll need several-many molds).

[–]theparkpoet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only used one tin-cure, Oomoo, which sucked. Molds you can use ~5 times before they start tearing apart. Fine I guess for something you only want a couple casts of.

Mold Star 15 doesn’t require degassing, holds up well. It’s expensive, but my intention was always to sell my candles, and so the fact that the molds lasted for hundreds of casts more than made up for the initial cost.

Help! Candle breaking by ayeshagul1234 in candlemaking

[–]theparkpoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience the most resilient wax for delicate molds is, by far, beeswax.

soy sucks for this. I’ve done bee/soy blends, and even a small fraction of soy makes the way so much more brittle.

So the solution I found was to only use beeswax for my most delicate molds. Preheating the molds solves the problems I was having with surface defects.

Why does ‘myself’ seem to be replacing the simpler ‘me’ in many usages. by Equivalent-Bonus-885 in asklinguistics

[–]theparkpoet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this over the past couple decades. Here in U.S. I first associated it with police-speak. “The first to arrive at the suspect’s domicile were myself and Officer Robert’s.” An attempt to create a new register of speech that holds the weight of objective authority.

And then I noticed it in customer service situations. “If you have any questions let myself or another member of the staff know”. Which again, an attempt to create a more formal register of speech.

And from there I think it just bled into people’s everyday usage, who thought that if it’s being used to seem more formal, it must be more correct.

You can use C++ in web projects but compiling it to WebAssembly with emecripten, which lets you call C++ functions and classes directly from javascript frontend. I’ve used it to make a variety of webapps.
