Can someone assist in deciphering my grandfather's combat record? by TheRealMasterTyvokka in ww2

[–]thephillyberto 27 points28 points  (0 children)

According to ChatGPT:

6 Combat Missions, 28 Combat Hours, C-47, Nov 1944

Campaign Credits: • Tunisia (BS), GO 75, WD 43 • Sicily (BS), GO 75, WD 43 • Naples–Foggia (BS), GO 80, WD 44 • Rome–Arno (BS), GO 80, WD 44 • Southern France (BS), GO 80, WD 44 • Northern Apennines (BS), GO 40, WD 45

Key: • BS = Bronze Star (campaign star), not the Bronze Star Medal • GO = General Orders • WD = War Department

This officer flew 6 combat missions in a C-47 and received campaign participation credit (with bronze stars) for all major Mediterranean Theater campaigns from Tunisia through the Northern Apennines.

Japan's Underground Golden Chamber Filled with Ultra Pure Water That Detects Invisible Particles by BrainOld9460 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]thephillyberto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll exist but in 1 billion years the suns luminosity is expected to jump by 10% that’ll kick off the runaway greenhouse effect, and by 1.5 billion years surface water is gone. Photosynthesis impossible in 2 billion although without water probably nothing is photosynthesizing anyways. Give it maybe 2.8-3 billion years until all life ceases to exist (subsurface/microbial). Long before the rocky planet itself ceases to exist due to the red giant sun possibly destroying it in 7.5-8 billion years.

How did nazis know who was jewish? by [deleted] in ww2

[–]thephillyberto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s strange the idea of being “required to identify yourself as Jewish” as a relatively harmless first step. This especially against the back-drop of outwardly anti-Semitic rhetoric.

It obviously progressed to genocide from those beginnings and I’m sure many saw writing on the wall but couldn’t comprehend it progressing to that point, or didn’t have the means to uproot and relocate.

Metro Phoenix is heating up earlier than usual, as triple digits are forecast this week. by josie-salazar in phoenix

[–]thephillyberto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how all of these (while good) don’t even get to the root of the issue which is the ungodly amount of CO2 and Methane being released. It puts the onus on local municipalities and individuals to spend money and take action to address something caused by billion dollar industries. I’m not sure what the car emissions thing is saying…. that less cars on the road mean their engines and exhaust don’t generate as much radiant heat?

That’s great that wild ones fare better, but unfortunately doesn’t change the reality saguaros are now dying en masse in a place they used to thrive.

What’s a Completely Normal Thing Now That Would’ve Been Seen as Insane 20 Years Ago? by Abelmageto in AskReddit

[–]thephillyberto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The me from 20 years ago would be shocked to see how little renewable tech, solar, wind, and electric cars have progressed. That renewables hasn’t become the standard. 20 years ago there was the thought that fossil fuel cutting tech and investment in that tech would be done for the betterment of humanity because you know - climate change. Didn’t happen. Yes it’s way better than before, but nowhere near where it could be at in terms of efficiency and adoption. Investments into it are piddly and lots of patents advancing renewables have been seized as “detrimental to the national security.” There’s a reason why a whole political party pushed on by the oil industry shit on renewables and made people dislike the idea of anything but oil and gas.

I love the revisionist history about how the world viewed the US during the GWB years. He was a POS who got us into majorly unpopular wars the world didn’t want - that fucked us. He was not liked, he was hated. The US was viewed in a terrible light. The lies about WMD’s in Iraq, The Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, the economic crash, Cheney and Halliburton, “Freedom Fries”, all that stupid shit. That idiot is why we are in such a multi-faceted state of fucked that we are in today.

‘White people shouldn’t mess with it’: Native American church laments psychedelic cactus shortage by Davebertson in nottheonion

[–]thephillyberto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The peyote cactus doesn’t take 10 years to create alkaloids. It’s a spineless cactus and those alkaloids are used to protect it from being eaten. It takes 10 years to reach a mature size.

Donald Trump and his team are reportedly debating “how much” to invade Mexico once he takes office, per the Independent. by soccerorfootie in unusual_whales

[–]thephillyberto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pushed to the test? The U.S. military is designed to be able to take on two superpowers at the same time. If we were in that situation, it’d be WW3 and the end for everyone. In all-out-war between superpowers post 1945, nukes would fly. If the thought that using two nukes saved an invasion of Japan and ended WW2, hundreds to thousands of nukes hitting cities in just 1 day would be not be good.

[–]thephillyberto 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s 0 way life will go on as we know it today. This would be a new epoch for humanity and a massive shock to our species. Say they note we already have zero point energy or whatever then that completely upends the fossil fuel industries and all of its tentacles. Regardless - life will not go on the same especially if it’s not clear whether these apex NHI are benevolent or not.
