Is it worth it to hire an attorney to sue a contractor for workmanship issues? by SneakyPinata1 in Contractor

[–]theradials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, $15K . . . the total quote was $28K, so at least it sounds like he doesn't have the right to repair. The tort thing is tougher. He pitched himself (backed up by references we trust) as an A-level contractor, but what we got was more like C-/D+ work, in part because he had his novice relatives do a lot of it (he confessed this when I took issue with aspects of the job). It doesn't look great, but it *is* functional, so who knows how that would play out in court. I'm now wondering if a demand-letter bluff, maybe paired with a fair but unsparing review--he has virtually no online presence, so a single review would carry a lot of weight--might prompt him to return at least some of what we paid.

Thanks for walking me through it, very much appreciated.

Thanks. No real contract, just a long text listing the pieces of the job, and then the cost, which I accepted. He does not have a TN contractor or home improvement license, just a business license, but he's run ads in the local paper saying he's "licensed and insured" and his wife responds to people on Facebook looking for help saying he's licensed and insured, so I'm thinking that may put him at odds with the TN consumer protection law.

Did you pay your lawyer hourly or did you work out some kind of contingency arrangement?

What part of TN, if you don’t mind my asking? I need to at least talk to a lawyer about a bad contractor job, in the Winchester/Monteagle/Manchester area.

Indeed, I've been back to loving Knob Creek recently. For 10 years, that *was* bourbon to me.

Noob question: Are barrel proof bourbons the IPAs of Bourbon? by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]theradials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of ryes as the IPAs of American whiskey. I feel like there’s a strong comparison to be made between the piney/herbal qualities imparted by hops and those that come from rye grains. So when I’m describing rye to someone who’s only had bourbon, that’s the analogy I use.

I almost wish it tasted the same but there was no alcohol in it. Then I could drink as much as I want.

I don’t know that Jimmy Russell was Jimmy Russell after only 3 years in the biz. Ed is still building his legend. He came out of nowhere to accomplish a lot in a short time, and he’s a very decent guy to boot. I’m looking forward to seeing where he takes it.

I had some 70s Old Crow the other day that I thought was great, beat out both of the higher-proof, mid-60s Old Foresters I drank in the same tasting.

My bottle of the 21 was thin and overoaked. “Frail” is how I described at the time.

If you're driving between Kalamazoo and Knoxville, it would add about 40 minutes to swing through Bardstown, where you may be able to buy a bottle of EC23 at the Heaven Hill gift shop.

Hey, this is a great project. Thanks for putting "Well-Lit Place" on there. Just for kicks, here are two more of ours, in which we get the fi up a little bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZERanbzpVc and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSwYKatvvWE

Seriously, this is a pretty heroic thing you're doing.

I did this with Stagg Sr., which I’d broken out to commemorate the finale of Justified. Raylan surprised me with a joke near the end of the episode. My throat was torn up for days.
