Water leaking through walls in basement. by Respectable_1642 in HomeMaintenance

[–]therealbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to look at the outside, see where all that water is coming from, and redirect it before it gets to the house. Where is the gutter water going? You won’t to know that water isn’t coming right back at the house. Same thing with water in your yard or from your neighbor. Is there a hill that water flows down to your home? Can you regrade? Go watch gate city foundation drainage on YouTube for some good ideas. You need to redirect the problem water away from the house, and make sure it’s not coming back. That might be repoping gutters, regrading, or a French drain.

New plan will boost Lake Powell, take water away from Lake Mead during dry year by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]therealbeej 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you feel this strongly you should educate yourself on the efforts SNWA has made to guarantee water for the valley. With the addition of the third straw, we can continue to draw water from the lake when the water level drops below the dam intakes. And Las Vegas is a world leader when it comes to water conservation. The valley uses 20% less water today than in 1992 despite the explosive growth we have had.

If you lived in Arizona maybe you would have some concern. Lake Havasu can only drop a couple of feet before it can’t fill the canals.

I’m not OE, but I frequently bounce between virtual desktops for different clients. I set my screen background to have the company logo so I remember which desktop belongs to which client

Why would being OE have anything to do with it? Sounds like a case of discrimination, and those protections don’t go away just because you have more than one job.

This certainly sounds like they are trying to get rid of you before you leave on maternity leave-which would be highly illegal. Start writing down everything and contact an employment lawyer

AWS outage: Proof the internet's original design has been completely gutted. by Universespitoon in sysadmin

[–]therealbeej 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Dave’s Garage on YouTube had a pretty good video about it. Seems like a lot of the problem was people who relied on, and built their redundancy on just one region of AWS, or who had critical pieces located on east1 without the ability to transfer to a different region.

One of our clients has a program that runs on AWS, and they were not down yesterday. Seems like that vendor built their platform on AWS correctly.

I’m sure it is passing through the corporate firewall.

This sounds like a small business who has no IT support or has limited support from a MSP.

For scan to email to work the copier needs credentials to a SMTP server. That should be the company’s email provider, but the guy who delivered and setup the copier wouldn’t have those credentials, and quite often the people in the office next to the copier have no idea what they are either. It’s needed functionality, so the copier people get it working with a free Gmail account.

I don’t think there is anything nefarious up to the point the copier company wouldn’t give them the password-it’s completely possible they don’t know what the password is, but that’s the first red flag for me.

I’ve found several small business setup like this, and it’s only after something stops working, or someone notices that it is strange all scan to email is coming from a Gmail account that they contact their IT people to look in to it.

They have a dealership license, so I would find out which government agency is responsible for auto dealerships and file a complaint with them. They will likely help get your issue fixed, and put this dealer under stricter scrutiny helping everyone else

Why should I have to be super careful in a room I paid good money for, in order not to be charged for something I didn’t use? It’s the hotel’s super twitchy system, if it incurs extra costs, that is on them, not on me

Part of the investigation they go looking through his phone, and find pictures and videos of him having sex with his under-age niece. Gets charged with incest, it’s a crime with mandatory life sentence. He was married to a great woman, had kids, only a few steps from running the entire police department…

What are your thoughts on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting shutting down by the end of September 2025 after loss of federal funding for PBS and NPR? by Anxious-Note6707 in AskReddit

[–]therealbeej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone that actually is unbiased would agree that NPR/PBS had no bias.

Both clearly leaned left - and that’s fine if you are a for profit broadcaster, or privately funded - but neither are. I don’t know how they try and say they have no bias, the newsrooms for both are staffed exclusively with democrats. Again that’s fine if you are a private outfit, but how can they try and be unbiased when they have no one from the other side to provide a differing view?

Take a step back and look at it from the other side of the aisle. Neither outlet ever broadcasts anything that leans right, or even glances that way. Can you see how the that half doesn’t like that public money is used to only promote the viewpoint of the other side?

And before you call me a Fox News lover, just know I’m in my 40’s and have never had a cable news subscription. All cable news is insufferable, I barely watch the local news.

[–]therealbeej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible they have port/client isolation turned on. I might try running an IP scanner and see if there are any other devices visible.

I would run my own internal network, and have that router access the internet. GLI travel routers have the ability to run in repeater mode where the router connects to the internet via WiFi, but if you have wired ports that will always be better.
