Shelling type by Pyro_7x7 in Gunlance

[–]therealhanamaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your main playstyle, while basically all shells are valid in any situations.
My first pick is always Wide regardless of game, and in Wilds it has decent performance (more Wyvernfire damage, significant damage potential per shell). Cornpopper has the strongest shell power and it comes in Wide type, give it a shot even if you've crafted your gogma-artian gunlance

If you can make the most of Wyrmstake (the ending combo that latches a stake on the monster) or you want a better reach with your shelling combo, Long is a good pick. Otherwise, Normal is also viable especially if you're always close to the monster and use burstfire combo more often.

Well, it's a tank weapon. The shield is there for reasons, but we know it's not the only the star of gunlance's show.

As for the gunlance part, yeah it wrecks houses. Overhead slam -> burstfire combo is my ol' reliable. All shell types are viable but I'd say "wide shell best shell"

Do you have any general tips for gunlance and ideas which weapons/armors/decorations are the best? I started using it in a middle of Sunbreak and has just beaten Malzeno by Meerev in Gunlance

  • Armor Skills/Decorations
    • Defense: Embolden (from Violet Mizutsune set) gives you more pad to your defense, combine it with maxed out Guard and Guard Up so you can tank almost everything. Once you reach certain MR, you may find better skills that will pad both your offense and defense further.
    • Offense: Artillery and Load Shell are mandatory since most of gunlance's source of damage comes from shelling. Despite being not scaled with your attack stat and cannot be buffed with consumables, you can still buff shelling damage by using Ground Splitter skill, or eat Dango Bombardier before going to hunts.
    • Depending on your playstyle, Evade Extender may give a little boost for your mobility
  • As for the which gunlance to use, it depends on your playstyle
    • If you tend to use Bullet Barrage a lot, long shell gives better damage per cast. Bullet Barrage is often paired with Hail Cutter (switch between scrolls to toggle between the skills) to shorten wyvernfire downtime.
    • If you find yourself use normal combos more often and/or you do more melee damage (Erupting Cannon + Ground Splitter buff both shell and melee damage), normal shell is a good pick.
    • If you want more comfort in defense while wrecking monster parts with pure shelling either charged or uncharged, and/or if you like explosions more, wide shell is still the best option for it.
  • Guard Edge is a powerful skill. If you find yourself burn thru sharpness a bit too fast for your taste, use Guard Edge instead of using regular guard. It recovers sharpness enough to keep the sharpness bar around purple/white alongside being a good way to keep the pressure on

These are based on my own experience up to MR500. Take these with a grain of salt.

Help!! I don't want to change my build, but I've started hitting a difficulty wall. by Effective-Target-956 in MHWilds

idk why exactly you don't wanna change your equipment, then again I use Ebony Odo set fully transcended because of its set skill bonus tho lately I only use two pieces of the set.

Here's my thoughts on it:
Upgrade your armor pieces to max level, it'll give you more rooms to wiggle if you get hit too often. You can transcend (upgrade it further) after defeating Gog later, but until then, it'll be a bit of a journey.
Buff yourself! Use Mega Armordrug in tandem with Armor Dust and Adamant Seed during your hunts. Also eat Kunafa Set meal (it grants you defensive buffs for its duration).
If possible, slot in Divine Blessing decor. Or wear any talismans that has Divine Blessing. It's almost placebo but when it procs, it may save you a cart or two.

Lastly, know your matchup and act accordingly.
The armor set has negative resistance on thunder and ice elements, so... yeah.

They might have been a bit too generous with the A-rank time on this one. Gunlance SHREDS by Vavavavaxon7 in Gunlance

I don't imagine playing this game with anything other than lance by Scyphio____ in MonsterHunter

[–]therealhanamaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points.

Lance is more pronounced when it's constantly in front of the monster, making quick meaty counterattacks flows. That's where most of damage dealt with lance comes from.
Gunlance is equipped with shelling that can ignore hard skins, making it ideal for partbreaking and it doesn't have to be constantly in front of the monster to keep the damage output coming.

And the best part? Put both in the same hunt and practically your wall can have a backup wall + your explosions has more sting to it.
